We move forward, 'cause we can't go back...
It's the EIGHTH anniversary of Handplates, and the first one after I finished the comic back in July! I decided to dig up a very old wip that I never finished and finally do it. I've always loved WeMoveForward by The Midnight, and I think it applies not only to the comic itself but also this period after it... there's no way to go back to when I was doing it, only moving forward after it's done.
Even more appropriately, since I did this wip, these characters all moved forward even further... even as this sat in my files, they moved forward, in a sense. I don't know, the song gives me a sort of plaintive, longing, bittersweet feeling... it's hard to explain.
I had a very insistent voice in my head that always made me do a Handplates page over the years I was working on it, no matter what happened. I wasn't sure if that voice would ever stop, even when it's done, but it has! It's gotten quieter now, mostly only nagging me about other projects I should be working on (Defrag, the Ace Attorney/Frozen fic, web design, fic ideas, art ideas...) whenever I'm doing something, much like it did before I started the comic.
How I feel about Handplates finishing though is strange. At times it doesn't feel like it's over, even if I don't feel like I need to do another page. At other times I get sad thinking about it and I miss it, and other times I look back on it with amazement that I was able to do it. Sometimes I look back on it and think about what was happening in my life at that time, and sometimes when I look at it it's unreal and it's hard to believe I even did it, like someone else did the whole thing. It's like it's there but it's not, it's present but it isn't. It's a very strange feeling, it's hard to describe or pin down. I know it'll always be with me in some way, but it is strange to be able to focus so much attention on other things without that feeling of having to set aside a few days to do a page every two weeks... not bad or anything, but I'm not used to it still.
I don't know! When I read the comments on the last page a lot of them made me cry, especially those talking about how the comic had been their childhood, and now their childhood is over. It was sad to think that I had a part in something like that ending... but it ends for everyone, no matter what you do. We, you and me, everyone... we move forward, 'cause we can't go back. That line was so evocative for me that I even used it as a chapter title for the penultimate chapter on Comicfury.
I don't know, just nostalgic thoughts! I don't know if that's the right word for it... but thank you to all of you who read it and enjoyed it. Even now I hear from new people coming to it and reading through it again now that it's done. Even if it's finished, it's still new to people just finding it. It's still "living" in a sense. And thanks to those of you who stuck around even though it's done, I appreciate it. |D
(As a note, the Gaster ukagaka has a surprise if you boot him on the anniversary after seeing the brothers, if you haven't done that)

Seeing love for this show makes me happy. There's so much negative going around such a fun series and I don't understand.
I don't think I'll EVER recover from Sonic telling Shadow all smugly "That's why you don't have any friends, Shadow!" despite Shadow LITERALLY COMING TO HELP HIM OVER AND OVER AND TRUST HIM WITH SO MUCHSHDFSKJ I loved Sonic Prime so much and especially love it when Sonic is a well-meaning idiot. It's good shit.

This might be the only way Aang killing Ozai might work.
How it should have gone
Katara : I don’t know what to do, every single past avatar told Aang to kill Ozai but he wouldn’t listen
Toph: Who knew Twinkle toes can be so stubborn?
Sokka: There is… one more thing we haven’t tried
——later——
Sokka: Aang we think you should kill the fire lord
Aang: I already told you that the monks has alwa….
Zuko: My dad gave me the scar when I was twelve
Aang *getting slightly into the avatar state and having a change of heart * : MOST life are sacred

These two is why I refuse to acknowledge Korra as cannon. Them and the lionturtle giving people bending.
Because apparently all that really cool lore about how the waterbenders learned from the moon, and Oma and Shu learned from bagermoles, are just silly baseless rumors and REALLY bending just popped up because a turtle touched you in the right spot and said so.

My issue with Katara is none of those things. My problem with her is she featured in all my least favorite plotlines in the show. Imprisoned was kinda boring after the first watch, the whole feminism thing in the North Pole was annoying, the painted lady was also kinda boring the first couple times and actively hurt the episodes that came after with the whole tight schedule thing. And she was kinda the villain in the runaway, even though she was completely right it still felt like a buzz kill because the scamming montage was fun. Then her somehow managing to blame Zuko for her mom's death was entirely uncalled for.
Honestly the only episode she's featured in that I still enjoy watching is the blood bending episode.
It's got nothing to do with bad writing, it's just her episodes aren't great.
She's better in the Netflix series, but I still struggle with her because for some reason I don't see Katara, I just see her actress. I think it might be the makeup though, no fault in the writing or acting.
My favorite thing about the Live Action Atla is that people are finally realizing Katara was a well-written character. For years, she was constantly memed for being "too emotional" and "talks about her mom too much" and yeah there's a scene or two she says something completely uncalled for (you all know which line) but sometimes people lash out and say things they regret. Katara wasn't supposed to be perfect in the original show, Sokka wasn't supposed to be perfect, Zuko wasn't supposed to be perfect, and Aang wasn't supposed to be perfect. Now that the live action stripped most of the characters of necessary flaws needed to develop, you all see how hollow they are. Katara's fault wasn't that she was too emotional and that is evidenced by the charm of her character being nonexistent without those strong feelings. Similarly with Sokka's sexism he needed to get over (which happened quickly as a mercy for the audience and thank god). Similarly with Toph realizing it isn't weak to rely on others every now and again. Similarly with Zuko realizing true strength is having a strong moral compass and following it no matter the consequences.

Agreed. What is with all the online hate? Like the show wasn't perfect but I had so much fun watching it and got so excited at various parts. And was actively cheering at my TV sometimes. I don't get it.
Me: Wow, the Netflix ATLA was better than what I expected. Indeed, it felt too rushed, probably because they were asked to do only 8 episodes like everything in the platform; but they were still able to capture the feeling of the original, and it was an enjoyable show. Not to mention the effects, those were so well done, especially Zuko fire kicks, I loved those.
Me: *checks internet opinions*
Me: Oh... I'm supposed to hate this adaptation.

ughhh UFGGG IZURUS SCENE IN ULTRA DESPAIR GIRLS IS ROTTING MY BRAIIIINNNNN THE THEMES THE THEMES THE THEMES TH
when he crushes the kumas. to get junko ai to shut the fuck up. its a moment of genuine rage from him, because despite what he may tell himself about being emotionless, his rage toward junko is very real. we see that with his lines in the boat scene
but then junko says “i didnt know you still felt such emotions. or perhaps, you’re forcing yourself to feel something in a situation like this.”
AND THIS. THIS IS THE LINE THAT MAKES ME SO GUEUWGRJH. because maybe she’s right, maybe there’s something deep inside of him that WANTS to feel that rage but is too empty to, maybe that anger isn’t genuine and he truly is emotionless. but even so, is he truly emotionless if there’s still that subconscious desire not to be?
but. maybe she’s lying. maybe that rage is genuine, and this is her trying to make him QUESTION that. question the little bit of humanity left in him that’s able to shine through, in an attempt to rob him of it. ‘you just showed me emotion — but are we SURE that emotion is genuine? you can’t feel, after all.’ i think both options are equally intriguing.
but regardless of which is true — she’s still successfully messing with his head. even beyond the grave, she is still controlling him, and his anger has grown into such deep obsession that he goes out of his way to bring her back from the dead. so she can finally fulfill her promise of giving him something interesting. he hates her, and in that hatred he is continuing her legacy; he’s giving her exactly what she wants from him. and he’s smart enough to see that, but angry enough not to care. he’s not emotionless; chiaki taught him love and grief, junko taught him rage and obsession.
even when izuru escapes the lab and even when junko’s dead and rotting, izuru still doesn’t have free will. he is still being controlled.

I love that shadow just kinda stands there and takes it for the sake of the story. It's brilliant. How'd sonic bribe him for that?

I love that in every universe Sonic lands in his instant thought is "I gotta find Tails." "You know who can solve this? Tails." "I bet Tails can take us out of this situation."
