TODAY, 18 JANUARY: Thousands gather in Umm al-Khair in the South Hebron Hills for the funeral of Haj Suleiman al-Hathaleen, an elderly Palestinian activist who was run over by a police tow truck. After days in critical condition, al-Hathaleen died of his wounds earlier this week. Photo by Oren Ziv
While Suleiman was peacefully resisting the confiscation of his neighbors’ cars, an Israeli police truck ran over him and dragged him for ten meters while he was caught underneath it. The police, however, simply left the scene of the crime, with Suleiman lying on the ground, bleeding and critically injured. His neighbors were the ones who called the ambulance, and he was transferred to a hospital in Hebron.
Suleiman and his family are Palestinian Bedouins who arrived in Umm al-Khair to start a new life after they were displaced from the Naqab/Negev by Zionist forces during the Nakba in 1948. Their world changed once again after Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967, and in the 1980s, the settlement of Carmel was built directly on his village’s lands. There are less than ten meters between Suleiman’s home and the houses of the Jewish settlers; a barbed wire fence separates a life with all the luxuries of the 21st century from a life that lacks the most basic necessities.
my ex-classmate dasia is under threat of losing her home bc of th universities inhumane n impossible room n board costs. they’re juggling a full time job nd r unable to apply for a loan bc of family credit history. if ur mutuals with me u know that i left this university for a number of reasons, but one of the main factors was its poaching of impressionable, low income & working class kids from around atl, offering what looks like a full ride, n then barraging us w housing costs that we can’t afford. i’m in longterm debt from just 3 semesters. dasia is a sweetheart, & it would be incredibly appreciated if u could share this post or consider sending some $ her way.
here is a link to dasia’s gofundme, and here is a tweet w their venmo and cashapp info.
anyways I’ve come back to this site to say that I have read 1984 and just relistened to the used song of the same name. gotta say it makes more sense now
“The Wampanoag Nation once included all of Southeastern Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island, encompassing over 67 distinct tribal communities…With the European settlers came much adversity for our tribe - disease that virtually wiped out whole villages, systems of government that bore little resemblance to our tribal practices and values, missionaries intent on converting us to Christianity, and private models of land use and ownership that conflicted with our tribe’s own communal practices and values. The vast majority of these tribal communities were killed in battles initiated by colonists to secure land. Today, only six visible tribal communities remain.” (Wampanoag history)

the thing i’m bothered abt today is so many ppl here feel comfortable without restraint treating other users, esp ppl with big followings, that theyve never interacted with like they’re best friends like in that mean joking way. that post thread abt the person answering an ask w “i’m studying x field” and the rando in the replies clearly w no sense of boundaries going “i’m you and no you aren’t!” like dude how is that funny. that person doesn’t know u and you don’t know that person. what you might see as joking with your best pal is in reality you annoying the hell out of someone who has no clue who you are and has no idea what tone you’re using. and that kind of attitude is not going to make that person want to be friends with you it’s going to give them red flags to avoid you. like what’s the point. it’s ok to be normal to people and not be fuckin bizarre. an interaction with a stranger should not be a one sided game that the stranger doesn’t know the rules of please just be normal istg
