Bill Bradley One-Man Show Rolls Onto Max With Story of His Extraordinary Life, And A Plea For Better Politics
This was one of my more enjoyable interviews ever, with NBA Hall of Famer and former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley, about his new one-man show, "Rolling Along," debuting today on Max. He's had quite the life, and truly hopes to find ways to heal some of the partisan divides that split the country these days. That is...optimistic, but totally on brand for Bradley's remarkable life.

YouTube is a streaming giant no one seems to notice. You can blame Google's AI investments
Investors have focused on Alphabet's cloud and AI segments in this week's quarterly earnings, but quietly, its subscription segment (YouTube Premium among others) is now a $15 billion business, plus ads are continuing to grow. More bad news for Hollywood studios trying to make money on DTC streaming. https://www.forbes.com/sites/dbloom/2024/01/31/youtube-is-a-streaming-giant-no-one-notices-blame-googles-ai-investments/?sh=3b09c8749f79

The family that games together is increasingly common in US and UK, a new study shows. And they're frequently watching connected TV too. I'm most interested in the rise of "mom gamers" playing with their young kids. https://www.forbes.com/sites/dbloom/2024/02/01/family-gaming-grows-in-the-us-and-uk-study-shows/?sh=79da641d69c2

In between working with U2, Laurie Anderson, Talking Heads, Roxy Music and other prominent musicians, Brian Eno has been using technology in fascinating ways to create the ambient music genre, rethink the ways we make music, and explore a wide range of artistic projects. 'Eno,' the new documentary about Eno, uses generative AI tools to create endless variations of the final film. Some parts are always in the resulting digital cinema print, but others are changed in and out. It's a fascinating view of the possibilities for a new kind of cinema. https://www.forbes.com/sites/dbloom/2024/01/18/eno-generative-ai-the-perfect-tool-for-doc-about-a-musical-chameleon/?sh=4955f3a96ac9

'Ready Player One' creators launch Readyverse immersive experience and technologies
Very interesting news from the creator of "Ready Player One" and the producer of the hit Spielberg movie based on it. They're building an interactive experience, including Warner Bros. license assets from the movie, built atop AI-powered tools from partner Futureverse that will enable world creation and portability across worlds even beyond what the Readyverse will encompass. It's trying to enable the multi-IP, multi-universe experience that Ernst Cline envisioned in his hit book and sequel. Check out my story:

As our embrace of #AI #chatbots quickly grows, remember: "Much like a good storyteller, chatbots have a way of taking what they have learned and reshaping it into something new — with no regard for whether it is true." Terrific NYTimes.com interview with Brian Eno unearthed this fascinating take on some of the emerging art forms out there. Never thought of #ASMR this way, but of course, esp. for an audio pioneer like Eno. But also #LARPing. Interesting stuff https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/11/14/magazine/brian-eno-interview.html

Jason's Beach Beatz by 40 Foot Jesus 40 Foot Jesus is back!!!! releasing more mixes from the vaults. Remembering a friend who is not with us any more, after losing his wife to a lingering series of illnesses and feeling too devastated to continue. I made three mixes for Min (already here on Soundcloud), Jason, and their dog Nigel (releasing here soon). The mix is cheerful and infused with guitar and bass since he played wonderfully... and some dark undertones because IYKYK. If any of your friends are struggling with dark thoughts, do your best to help. Sometimes it doesn't work, but you can try. 40 Foot Jesus Loves You <3

Nearly a decade after splitting Fox and News Corp. into two companies, they may re-merge into one entity. But Rupert Murdoch's reasons for a split then haven't aged well in the streaming era, especially after selling off most of Fox to Disney (admittedly for a whole bunch of money, which is nice to have). Will a merger, plus the Tubi and Fox Nation streaming services be enough to drive Future Fox/News (Nox? Fews?) in coming years? My latest Next TV column looks at the challenges, which will be plenty long after 91-year-old Rupert is gone. https://www.nexttv.com/news/murdochs-may-reunite-fox-and-news-corp-but-can-it-survive-a-streaming-future-bloom

Danny Jolles wanted his new YouTube standup special to stand out from the flood of competitors. So he came up with a unique "choose-your-own-punchline" interactive approach for his comedy, writing strings of jokes on both sides of various topics. Despite the "nightmare" of producing it, the result is still funny, and definitely different. I talked with Jolles here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/dbloom/2022/10/13/danny-jolles-sees-both-sides-now-in-interactive-comedy-special-on-youtube/?sh=44966e96718f

Danny Jolles wanted his comedy special to stick out. So he devised an elaborate choose-your-own series of jokes, both pro and con, on a series of topics, and created a unique (and free) project on YouTube that's worth a watch. Check out my column about what he did, and how, plus links to the show itself: https://www.forbes.com/sites/dbloom/2022/10/13/danny-jolles-sees-both-sides-now-in-interactive-comedy-special-on-youtube/

#Steampunk teddy bear scientists cooked up by the #AI at Dall-E 2, based on some general text descriptions. Bunch of court cases floating out there now on who gets to claim copyright/patent around AI projects. This ups the ante, I think.

In my latest #BloomInTech #podcast, I talk with Adweek CEO Juliette Morris and Sr. Producer Al Mannarino about their new podcast network, the state of podcasting & advertising, & much else (congrats to my friend Debra Chen, whose The Great Fail has been added to the Adweek network). And separately, I talk about how the ad-soaked #FridayNightBaseball live stream represents a big change for Apple TV Plus, and really, for Apple itself. Two baseball games a week are unlikely to be the only live sports, or live-streamed programming on TV+. Now we have to see what else gets added. https://anchor.fm/davidlbloom/episodes/Its-An-Ads-World-Apple-TV--Friday-Night-Baseball--Advertising--and-Adweeks-New-Podcast-Network-e1h5grv
