again i ask... where is the joke. what's so funny about image descriptions that you feel the need to blatantly lie about them for internet points and make fun of people just trying to help. people don't add image descriptions to be funny... it's to help visually impaired users or people who otherwise are not able to view pictures. making fun of people who add image descriptions and then lying in reblogs for a funny haha joke is extremely juvenile and in poor taste. you guys aren't funny. you should be ashamed.

Okay so because I’ve got Phillip Pullman on the brain recently I wanted to talk for a second about how genius the daemon picks for Lyra’s parents are.

At first glance Lord Asriel’s Stelmaria might seem like an odd choice. Snow leopards are generally shy cats. However I think having just a big cat in general says a great deal about his character. Cats are independent, single minded, and charismatic. We see that his sheer force of personality opens many doors for him. However his use of power and the pursuit of his goals is extremely subtle. Having a more powerful cat like a tiger or lion indicates a certain brashness that is not present. He doesn’t tip his hand, he’s patient. He waits for what he wants to present itself and then pounces. A snow leopard encapsulates the mystery and charm he possesses while still being at heart, an ambush predator.

Mrs. Coulter’s golden monkey (fascinatingly unnamed in canon) is a much more obvious appropriate pick. Monkeys are cunning, skilled, and dangerous. They share a lot of their traits with humans but are upsettingly lacking in empathy. Watching nature documentaries growing up I was often struck that many monkeys are like little children. They have all the fascination of a child burning ants alive without ever developing a conscience that perhaps that might be wrong. We see that Mrs. Coulter has acted in extremely appalling ways often just to see what will happen.

Imagine Lord Asriel not wanting to admit to you that he was wrong.

“Why can’t you just listen to me?” You followed Asriel through the plane, pleading for him not to do what he was planning to do. Whatever it was, this obsession that had taken over him - there was no way that it was a good thing.

And what came next was some sort of yelling - he was always yelling. “And you’re not coming. I forbid it!” At least that part you were able to understand. He continued to pack up his transportation, but you - you sat down refusing to leave at all. You wrapped your arms around yourself and raised an eyebrow at him. He paused and sighed, already having dealt with Lyra and now it was your turn.

“If you’re going, then I’m going. You’re going to need me to keep you steady.” Your daemon, a Capybara, plopped down by your feet, it’s sweet little face eyeing Asriel’s daemon.

“I forbid it,” He said again. “I don’t need you. And you’re not ready. You’ll get cold.”

“I’ll borrow one of your coats.”

“You’ll get bored.”

“I’ll help you.”

“You’ll-”

“I’ll find a reason for anything that you say, Asriel. Just admit that you’re wrong and you do really need me there.”

It was something he was never going to do. He just groaned in exasperation and continued to pack while you sat there, feeling like you had half-gotten your way.
