The common Addison

Physical description:

The nose/beak is the common Addison's most Distinguishing, if comically disproportionate, feature. It is long, sturdy and it sits proudly in the center of the salescreature's typically angular face. The underside is bordered by a singular lip which, more often than not, is set in a marketable smile full of pearly white, blunt teeth. The nose/beak is utilized in a multitude of ways and is home to impressively advanced sensory receptor sites which it uses to gauge the emotional state of it's potential clients. It has been observed fending off competitors with the bony point of the apandage which it will repeatedly jab in the direction of the offending party's eyes and throat. In addition to being a formidable weapon, it is also used for purposes of a more benign sort, guiding, caressing and preening it's offspring and flockmates.

Approximately an inch above the bridge of the nose/beak sit the eyes, peered in a seemingly perpetual squint—it is possible that the Addison may suffer some form of  photosensitivity or intolerance to the dust and fumes of the city but evidence to support this theory are still lacking. It is still capable of opening its large, circular eyes when it finds itself in a situation demanding of its undivided attention. When the delicate veil of its thin lids is lifted, a schlera, iris and pupil of varying colors may be observed . Reputedly, the Addison is capable of detecting a wide range of colors imperceptible to the eyes of Lightners.

The skin is bolstered in a layer of sleek, down-like feathers which sit flush against the body. The salescreature's coat comes in a wide range of colors, textures and densities, one type does not appear to be more common than another. Observed colors include: Blue, yellow, orange, pink, green, red, purple and various shades thereof. It is uncommon to find multicolor coat patterns in the common Addison but not entirely unprecedented. The Addison is exceptionally filth averse and will spend a substantial length of time every day grooming itself and the members of it's flock. An Addison who regularly overexerts itself physically or emotionally will often fall into the habit of over-grooming itself, causing bald spots and irritation to the underlying skin.

Albeit a relatively docile creature by nature it is furnished with two set of claws on the ends of its dexterous hands and limber feet which most Addisons choose to file down to a blunt point as its livelihood depends heavily on its ability to look and act pleasant and approachable.

Behavior:

Out of all the denizens of the cyber world, these creatures are probably the most sociable. If one common addison is spotted you can guarantee that several more occupy the immediate vicinity. It operates in flocks of as few as 3-4 and as many as several dozen. Unlike some of its more belligerent sub-types it is capable of cohabiting an ad-space with competing flocks without much trouble or unrest. It will, however, defend it's territory fiercely if it's rivals attempt to overtake it by force—during these conflicts no holds are barred, it is not uncommon for the involved Addisons to suffer grievous injuries or even death before it yields control over its domain.

The why's of this ferocity have a lot to do with the creature's strong parental instincts—it's place of business also serves as it's nesting grounds and a broody Addison is always a testy one. A healthy common Addison will lay approximately 3-5 unfertilized "Pipis" every month over the span of about four days, a supposed delicacy in some districts. These unviable pipis are sold off, eaten and, on occasions, used as projectiles once they've gone putrid over the span of several weeks. In the late spring the healthy Addison will produce a brood of "piplings" which will remain under the parent's meticulous care for about a year, at which point it is fit to make its own sales.

The pipling is a small, round and fuzzy creature with stubby limbs and a short nose/beak. It remains entirely dependent on its parents for the first three months of its life. It is curious and eager to learn once it has ventured outside the safety of the nest and will accompany and observe the parent Addison(s) on its business ventures for the remainder of it's time in its care.

Lifespan:

The Common Addison matures rapidly over the course of its first year of life, reaching adulthood after approximately 400 days. It appears to cease aging after this point, rendering it functionally immortal. Its body do not do a good job of mending whatever damage it sustains throughout its lifetime, however—it is the conjuction of many small injuries and ailments which usually spells the Addison's demise around the age of 40-50. If it has access to healing magic its longevity may be stretched out by many decades, but Self-preservation typically does not appear to sit high on its list of priorities.

Habitat:

Most commonly, these creatures are found in the sales district of cyber city, but it is capable of thriving just about anywhere in its dark world. It prefers a brightly lit and accessible environment where it can be easily seen and approached by potential customers. A flock of addisons may choose to live under the same roof—brooding couples, however, tend to break away from the unit whilst rearing their piplings but will join with them again once the offspring has gained some independence.

Diet:

The Addison is an omnivore. It enjoys various meats, fruits, grains and caffeinated beverages. It does not have a high tolerance for fatty or sugary foods.
