“Hello.”

Dean nearly jumps out of his skin when he hears a deep voice rumble next to him. He turns to see who’s there and freezes.

The man standing next to him has to be the most beautiful person he’s ever seen. He’s about Dean’s height, maybe an inch shorter. His hair is dark and messed up in the most perfect way. The part of him that takes Dean’s breath away is his eyes. Staring into them feels like walking out into the ocean to be swallowed by the waves.

His outfit is a force to be reckoned with. He’s in a rainbow crop top and cut-off denim shorts. He has on white high-top vans with rainbow laces. He has a backpack on with crocheted flags hanging off of it.

The man tilts his head, which makes Dean realize that he hasn’t responded. “Oh, uh, hi.”

The man turns to show his backpack. “Do you want a flag?”

Dean looks at the assortment of colors hanging from the backpack. “Um, I don’t really know which one is for me.” He’s shocked that he’s even admitting this to someone. This is the first time he’s ever implied to anyone that he’s anything other than straight.

The man shrugs the backpack off of his shoulders and pulls a small binder out, holding it out to Dean. “You can look through these definitions and see if anything fits. If all else fails, the rainbow flag is for everyone.”

Dean gently takes the binder, surprised by the generosity of this gorgeous stranger. He opens the binder and skims through the pages. He reads through a few of the definitions, but he keeps coming back to one.

Bisexual:

Attraction to more than one gender. Inclusive of trans and nonbinary people. Can be referred to as attraction to the same gender as yourself and genders that are not your own.

He kind of likes the look of the flag too. The pink, blue, and purple make a good combo. The definition is the first time he’s read something that’s described how he feels.

The man seems to notice him lingering on that page and unclips a bisexual flag from his bag. He attaches it to a little stick and holds it out to Dean. “Is this the one you want?”

Dean looks at the flag and nods. It’s cute. It’s about ten inches long and six inches wide. The crochet stitches are small, so it looks tightly knit. “Yeah, I think so.” He trades the binder for the flag. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. Happy pride.” He puts the binder back into his backpack and leaves Dean standing there wondering what just happened.

Hello.

So as some of you may know, spn salt is a huge stressor for me. The finale triggered so much anxiety and upset for me. That was bad enough, but this latest drama? Folks, I just can’t anymore. This is hurting my mental health and I need to take steps to make myself feel better.

I’ve loved the spn fandom for seven years. I was never super active, but I’ve been writing for spn for about that long. I love the things I’ve read.

But every time shit goes down on tumblr, my mental health takes a massive dive. This show means so much to me that every time something goes wrong, it hurts to much to bear.

I know you’re wondering about my wips. I have one that will come out before the end of the month, and there’s a possibility that I’ll finish my other long fic (that probability is dropping, sorry), but after that I’m done. Just thinking about writing more spn fics has me upset.

But don’t worry! I’m still going to be around! I have a new blog @skygraypiegon that I’m active on! You can get updates about my original writing and what I’m doing there. This blog will go inactive except to post promos for my fics that may or may not go up.

It was fun, y’all, but this is goodbye for me from spn. Thanks for all the good times.

i was thinking this morning about how i categorize fanfic authors that i enjoy like AKC breeds and decided to share my rubric with you:

the specialist: this author has a favorite kink or trope and has written 80% of the content in that tag. you know exactly what you’re getting. they have A Brand™️. no matter what other traits they display, dedicated rare pair authors belong here.

the chocolate box: essentially the exact opposite. this author will try anything once. they have 80+ works in the fandom with no discernible pattern. the shortest one is 268 words and the longest is well over 100k. this breed of author may or may not be related to:

the renaissance fan: they’ve written three things in your fandom: your favorite fic, your notp, and a bizarre crossover with a show you’ve never heard of. you hit “expand fandoms list” on their author page and have to scroll down twice to reach the bottom. whenever you curse the fact that you can’t legally commission fic writers, this is the author you’re thinking about.

the horn dog: they’re here for one thing and one thing only. if someone’s dick is not in another character’s mouth within 500 words, they apologize for it in the author’s notes. they have one (1) g-rated fic.

the rookie: this writer is usually young, new to fandom, or just got a beta-reader for the first time. their fics are a little all over the place, quality-wise, but you’re excited whenever their name pops up because their unique voice gets stronger every time. you feel a personal investment in their development, like you’re an old man reading the local high school sports page and saying “this kid’s the one to watch.”

the live streamer: the most prolific author in the fandom. their works are all over the front page when you sort by kudos. you have no idea how they generate this much work, and have seriously wondered if they have access to an extra-dimensional time portal. their stories are usually un-beta’d and the characterization varies wildly, but their best works are inspired and you’ve read them 30 times.

the cryptid: this one comes out of nowhere every two years, drops the best fanfic you’ve ever read, and disappears. fifteen months after you left a three paragraph comment about how they changed your life, you get a message in your inbox that just says “thanks.”

the novelist: we talk about “filing off the serial numbers” when someone reworks their most popular story to pitch it as an original novel; this author somehow does the reverse. their fics are excellent, usually long-reaching multi-chapter AUs that have almost nothing to do with the on-screen characters except their names. i’d like to extend my personal thanks to this breed of author because it’s the closest i get to reading an actual book.

the reunion tour: this author wrote some of the most popular works in the fandom, but either moved on to k-pop or burned out when canon took a turn for the worse. they put out one new thing a year, often an old draft that’s been haunting them from under the floorboards. their last six author’s notes all say they never thought they’d write this pairing again and “this will probably be the last time.”

Hey! Thank you for asking about that story. I keep telling myself that I will write the epilogue and accompanying destiel fic to that au, but I keep ending up with other projects. At the moment, I have a few things going on, but I might be able to whip up an epilogue for Angel Cakes sometime soon! I won't make any promises about when that will be because honestly I don't know. My writing has been very unpredictable lately.

“So when did it happen?”

Cas tilts his head. “When did what happen?”

“Y'know.” Dean rubs the back of his neck, cursing himself for bringing this up when he feels the warmth already rising in his cheeks. “When did you fall in… uh, with me?”

“Oh.” Cas pauses, considering. “I’m not sure. It took me a while to realize. When I did, it seemed like those feelings had always been there.”

“Okay, then when did you realize?”

This time, the answer comes right away. “When I watched you rake leaves.”

Dean blinks. Stares at Cas who stares back, nonplussed, like that answer made any kind of sense.

“When was that?”

“The year you were living with Lisa,” Cas says. “I came to see you, to seek your help in defeating Raphael, but when I saw how peaceful your life had become… I couldn’t bear to disturb that peace.”

“Cas,” Dean breathes. 

Cas smiles.

“You asshole, that was ten years ago! You really kept that under your hat for an entire fucking decade?”

The smile drops. Cas slouches in his seat, looking dangerously close to sulking. “Well, when did you realize your feelings for me?”

Dean has a sudden, unbidden flashback to Purgatory, to long, desperate days of searching and restless nights made all the worse for every prayer unanswered. 

Realizing that eight years isn’t much better than ten, he admits, “Okay, so we’re both idiots.”

“A couple of dumbasses?” Cas suggests wryly.

Dean huffs out a laugh. Reaches his hand across the table, cheeks growing warm when Cas takes it in his. He feels like a sap but he kind of likes that.
