I’ve been studying a lot lately, all Japanese. I’ve really been struggling to memorise words, so yesterday I tried a new method and started making my own word list and testing myself on it and it’s working really well already. I’ve also been doing flashcards on jpdb.
I succeeded in finishing the book I chose for January. It was okay, it gave an insight into Korean culture which was interesting. The book I’ll be reading this month is ‘나쁜 감정 정리법‘.

Jan 13th
I’ve studied according to the schedule I planned, honestly very surprised haha. I think because I factored in rest days and have a set of things I want to do I know what I’m doing everyday so there’s no stressing about what to do and when. I’ve just finished the first chapter of my Korean book for this month.

Jan 1 - Started my first book of the year for the month of January, ‘왜, 그 말이 어때서요?‘ which is a book about how the language we use, even if not intended, can discriminate against others and propagate prejudices.

2023 Language Goals
I will be focusing on a different language each month, with most months focused on Japanese (as I’m planning to take the JLPT at the end of the year) and also Indonesian which is just for whenever I feel like it.
I wrote out my recourses, and I’ll update them as a go and I get through things.
I’m going to try to read a book a month in Korean, no other concrete goals- just study as much as possible and try and stay focused :)

I took the TOPIK II!
I stopped studying for the exam after my last post because some stuff came up, and only started again 2 weeks before the exam so wasn’t really expecting much in the way of results. Though I got 6급! Fortunately it seems like the exam paper I took was on the easier side- the average scores were higher than previous test papers. Woo.
I am now studying Japanese!
I’ve attempted to learn Japanese several times, but never have gotten past learning Hiragana and ‘hello, my name is-‘. I’ve started learning Japanese last month with the goal of taking the JLPT in a year. I want to see how much I can learn in a year and I think it’s a fun challenge :)
I’m laddering(?), learning Japanese via Korean. I’m currently half way through my grammar textbook and just started learning Kanji. I’m going to try starting writing a diary in Japanese as well.

Had my Italki lesson the other day, I also finished reading a book in Korean. I’m talking with my friend in Korean everyday, but only studied for the exam for the first time in a few days today. I finished the first section in 빈도별토픽2 중고급 어휘 so that’s a small win. There’s so little time left so I’m going to try my best to get as much studying time daily in as possible.

Didn’t finish everything I wanted to do today because I was so tired, I felt really guilty drawing when I could be studying but it was really fun and I needed to do something relaxing. Will try to catch up tomorrow.

I impulsively signed up for the topik, and now I’ve got under 3 months to study for it. I have hardly used a textbook to study Korean in the past year or so, so this is going to be a challenge and I’m not sure what level I’m even aiming for but I’ll try my best!

Had my Korean lesson today, it was great :) I read out my homework, only correction was my pronunciation of ㅗ/ㅓ. We talked about me getting my covid vaccination, the weather, crayons, ghibli movies and so on. I also recorded this lesson on my phone so I’ll listen to it and review it tomorrow.

Today I had my second ITalki lesson! I read aloud my homework and the teacher corrected me (only 3 corrections, woohoo). And then we talked about my pets a bit and I learned the word 편식쟁이 (picky eater). The rest of the lesson we talked about reading, which is the topic I chose, and we have very similar reading preferences so it was really enjoyable. During the lesson I learnt ~하는 것 자체~, and realised my friend actually used it in a message she sent before my lesson. It all comes together haha.

Today I chatted with my Korean friends and did a 35 minute ‘language exchange’ (in which only 2 sentences in English were exchanged) with one of them. I also booked my next Italki lesson. Also watched far too many episodes of 학교2013.

June 28th 🌸
Today I had my first ITalki lesson in ages, I’ve decided to only do 30 minute lessons from now on as anything more is just too much for me. The tutor was so lovely, genuinely seemed interested in conversing with me and helping me improve my Korean. It’s a free talking lesson, but with some structure that she let me decide what I’d like to do, which fits me perfectly because I struggle to just keep a regular conversation going. My homework was to write something simple like a diary, so I did it right after the lesson ended lest I forgot haha.
