Skull Candy @yychuls Alla Prima Challenge 10! 45 minutes, no premixing, Native Mink skull. The sandstone Native painting and red circle adorning the skull took a good amount of the time away from the skull painting, but I’ve wanted to paint this skull since I saw it in the challenge list. Even with an extra 15 minutes these challenges force you to compress your process and make you step outside of your normal procedures. Phthalo Turquoise and Alkyd Ivory black were used on this painting including the normal primaries. Always great problem solving on a condensed time limit. Operation Pleinair 2 @yychuls Study week 9 no mixing on location is tough indeed! Wanted to find a more natural palette for the second go around on this challenge. Was really attracted to the atmospheric mountains framed by the urban decor of the Globeville landing park. I knew what I could do with the scene, but time allocated wasn’t going to allow for that. I finished the work the way I saw the scene being completed. Didn’t quite get what I saw in #sightsize but I always love attempting to get a lot of the key information translated to make a difference in the final pass. Was accompanied by @jacruff_art on this challenge, 5 stroke palette draw was tentative on this one. I enjoy this work on the final pass, the block in stage had to get the finishing touches. Operation Plein air @yychuls Alla Prima study 8 🚂 moving subjects are prone to move on you when painting, but I knew that going in. The likelihood that my subject would move was always an issue, but I felt I could capture the scene. Despite the cold outside I was looking to capture that little bit of rim light on the engine. I most likely would have made it but the train workers had other plans. Luckily I was able to quickly grab my phone and get a capture of the progress as they pulled the engine down the rails. You can see the shift in perspective in the timelapse. Denver weather is always testy so setup, mixing and Notan sketch time on a rather cold Monday took a lot of my sunshine out. The atmospheric perspective still shows in the background setting the bold shapes of the train and light pole in contrast. Was very difficult for me not to touch this painting up in the studio, my time was about 28 minutes and overall I had fears that I would be able to do anything on location within the time limit. PrimaryProwess 🟨🍋🟥🍊🟦🍇 @yychuls Week 7 utilizing a limited palette with the obstacles of multiple subjects for the challenge. Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson and Cad Yellow Light was my palette including white. I went overtime about 45 seconds, absolutely had to soften that large highlight on the Orange and dapple it a touch. We’ll call this a study at 31 minutes 🤣 but the timelapse includes it and that I switched out the grapes for a more plump one. Enjoyed jumping around and attempting to gain shape and form within the time allotted. Didn’t get a chance to dress the grape up as much as I wanted, but overall I think it makes a decent composition with the larger fruits staring down the little guy. Treasures from the Sea @yychuls Alla Prima study 6 was one shell of a time 🐚 🤣 From the collection of shells I went with the fan shell first because of it’s simplistic shape, and I had to try the Seahorse within the time limit as well. Have always enjoyed the convexities and concavities of their bodies. After weeks of graining into my head the 5 stroke palette rule on repeat, I think I’m slightly getting used to conducting these studies. Decadent Desserts 🧁 @yychuls Alla Prima study 📖 week 5 was a test of low key objects on a lighter background for me. Didn’t get to finesse the brush as much, and got the opportunity to pre mix but eliminated black, boo on my part. Rather got caught in trying to capture some of the nuances of a cupcake in 30 minutes with the 5 stroke palette draw in effect. Flower power 🌸 @yychuls Alla Prima Challenge 4 was a task and a half. Went after the first flowers with permanent rose and ivory black on the palette and didnt make it in the 30 minute time allotted so I decided to take the work to a level of finish and try the challenge again. Second flowers were more of a success in my eyes in terms of edges and overall form being achieved in the time parameters. Lemon Juice and lemon 🍋 @yychuls Alla Prima Week 3. That was one of the more difficult tasks to complete. I had to give the palette a practice run with the Lemon Juice. Helped me to realize that I would need more halftone to make it work. Besides black is a color I don’t extensively use, but I am pleased with the results. With the same 30 minute time limit in effect, throw in 5 Verical brushstrokes only before you clean or reapply and game on ⏳ We’ll see what next weeks Flower power challenge holds. Apples and Oranges 🍎🍊 undertook the AllaPrima challenge that @yychuls is putting forth. I find it to be a superb challenge in many aspects of oil painting no matter your skill level. With a 30 minute time limit and specifics on how many brushstroke’s you may apply. I may have shot myself in the foot my using a primary palette, making me mix colors within the time limit. I also made up for Week 1 by doing the challenge again with the apple. Excited to see what the other challenges hold and will be popping in next Friday with further progress of the challenges.
