JP types, did you know about the Moxie factory on Heath St? From 1928 to 1953 it was made at 74 Heath Street at "Moxieland" as the plant was called. Moxie has always looked like Coke, Pepsi or root beer, but the original taste was not like any other soft drink. People either loved it or thought it was the worst stuff they had ever tasted. It had a distinct, strong medicine taste, and in its best year of 1920 it outsold Coca-Cola. It is also older than both Coke and Pepsi.
Augustin Thompson created Moxie in Lowell in 1876, about 10 years before Coke. He was a medical doctor who brewed up a mixture of Gentian root extract, cinchona, sassafras, caramel and other flavorings to make "Moxie Nerve Food". It was billed as a medicine which can "recover brain and nervous exhaustion; loss of manhood, imbecility and helplessness. It has recovered paralysis, softening of the brain, locomotor ataxia and insanity". Thanks to JP Historical Society for much of this information.

On July 11, 1905, W.E.B Dubois and William Monroe Trotter convened a conference of black leaders to renounce Booker T. Washington’s accommodation-ism. They met at Niagara Falls, in Ontario, Canada, because hotels on the U.S. side of the falls barred blacks. The 29 men in attendance set forth a platform that demanded freedom of speech and criticism; a free press; manhood suffrage; abolition of all caste distinctions based on race or color; recognition of the principle of human brotherhood; belief in the dignity of labor; and a united effort to realize these ideals under wise and courageous leadership.
The organization they formed, the Niagara Movement, met annually until 1910. It was one of the organizations that paved the way for the formation of the NAACP. (Zinn)

I am not the candidate of black America, although I am black and proud. I am not the candidate of the women’s movement of this country, although I am a woman, and I am equally proud of that. I am not the candidate of any political bosses or fat cats or special interests. I stand here now without endorsements from many big name politicians or celebrities or any other kind of prop. I do not intend to offer to you the tired and glib clichés, which for too long have been an accepted part of our political life. I am the candidate of the people of America. And my presence before you now symbolizes a new era in American political history. " — Shirley Chisholm in 1972 announcing her candidacy for the Democratic nomination
Shirley Chisholm was an historic candidate at the 1972 Democratic National Convention, July 10-13. Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first to seek nomination for the highest office in the land."
