That moment when Luz actually opens up and talks about her feelings. The moment when Amity asks if she lied, the music gets tense and then the climax of. Silence. As Luz faces away and says it’s FINE. And you can feel the silent pain of both girlfriends. This episode, its scenes of their struggle with each other, it just got so raw and real and visceral!
Just the utter quietness of their reactions, the melancholy of those long, spanning shots that emphasize how small and lonely they are together, navigating a difficult and vast world around them. The subdued emotion. Their problems, their emotions are REAL and treated as such, and not as some manufactured kids’ show.
And that’s the thing, you really forget you’re watching a show, because you feel real people pouring their actual feelings and experiences into these stories, as Dana herself lost her father as a kid. It’s personal and intimate, it’s respectful and loves and praises its audience, as I’ve mentioned time and time before. This show doesn’t talk down to us and so we get these brilliant and earnest moments, because we’re not treated as kids and so we get straightforward, honest moments, just as Amity demands Luz be straightforward and honest with her, and is thus given that intense and unadulterated, unfiltered emotion with zero irony to it whatsoever. The directing was insane this episode, it really was something special as Rebecca promised.
I honestly find this one of the heaviest, hardest-hitting, gut-punching, realest moments in the show. And it’s not overtly angsty and heartbreaking, not that there’s anything wrong with that. It just makes me sit back and go “Man.” as I reflect and take in everything I’ve witnessed. The quietness just adds everything. It’s honesty cinematic. They’re just... quietly existing and letting their emotions speak for themselves, the show is letting these two speak for themselves, without having to actually say it; But when they do, it’s sublime. Just little moments like Luz silently realizing and taking in Amity’s reaction to her dead father, and immediately attempting to take it back; It’s everything.
There’s just so much thought process and emotions going in this silent interaction. You can see it turning in Luz’s head, what she’s thinking. The emotions are so well conveyed here, how Luz is thinking to herself Fuck I said too much take it back! Just these two getting to share a silent, peacefully intimate moment with each other. Amity walking up to Luz as she kneels over picking flowers like she’s before a grave, the cinematography...!
And then it’s all capped off with this perfect, wordless scene. These shots as we see what Camila and Vee are up to. The melancholy, the loneliness, the yearning. And how tired it leaves Camila, so she sighs and goes off; As if she’s going to rest. It’s just so much and the silence, the moment is so impactful and heavy. It just really weighs down on you and I love it.
...Fuck. I really need some levity after this, a breather.
also i love how the past couple episodes have had amity being the one to support and comfort luz
in the earlier parts of the show we had more of luz being there for amity, and the fandom absolutely RAN with that (probs because everyone loved the bad-but-sad girl whose Issues were way more noticeable than luz's, and wanted to see her get comforted)
it's a direct reminder of like "hey, luz isn't just some happy-go-lucky kid with no problems (as much as she glaringly tries to pretend she is) and she isn't just some prop to be used to further others' character development" and also "amity isn't some useless baby or coldhearted bad girl, she contributes just as much to this relationship as luz"
these two just. they love each other so much and are such supportive partners and their relationship is so equal and healthy
Can't stop thinking about the way Luz's legs gave out after telling Amity about her dad, or how she just looked so exhausted and drained as they sent off the flowers with the balloon.
Like, it's definitely just so heartbreaking to see her so worn down and emotionally wrecked, but in a way it's also a relief, because for the first time in a very long time (possibly ever), she's actually allowing herself to be vulnerable with someone and allowing that someone to help her and support her.
Luz was trying to be all light with it until she looked at Amity
and her facade started breaking
LOTS OF LOVE TO THE WRITERS STORYBOARDERS MUSIC ANIMATORS VOICE ACTORS, I MEAN SARAH-NICOLE ROBLES??? YOU CAN PRACTICALLY HEAR HER VOICE BREAKING AND THE EMOTIONS THROUGH THE ANIMATION AND THE SCRIPT
SHE DOESN'T HAVE ANY FLOWERS.
IT'S SUCH A SIMPLE SENTENCE BUT IT HURTS YOU, IT HURTS HER
I forgot this happened. Nvm what I said about not being sure whether Luz would be the “nice character goes apeshit” trope. She’s capable and I wanna see it.
