The “Senketsu is Isshin” Reading is Just Unfair

It must be because Ryuko and Senketsu are super cute in Kill la Kill the Game: IF or something, but I’ve been on such a big Ryuketsu kick lately. 

Ryuko: Beating you was about the easiest thing ever! Right, Senketsu?

Senketsu: It means we’re stronger now. Much stronger than before.

What can I say? They’re adorable.

Anyway, I searched for some Ryuko/Senketsu content yesterday, and I unfortunately came across the exact opposite of what I was looking for: a comment calling the pairing “garbage tier.”

Of course, I think it’s totally fair to dislike this coupling, and there are many reasons to find it distasteful or bad. But, long story short, I greatly disagreed with the justifications given; namely, me being me, when it comes to Kill la Kill talk, there’s nothing I can’t get behind more than the reading that Senketsu probably has Isshin’s soul in him and is basically Ryuko’s father, which would obviously make a romantic relationship between him and Ryuko… yeah.

I got inspired to get up on my soapbox and wrote some Twitter threads. And those are all very much tl;dr deals, but one thing I realized is that the assumption is probably that I’m so against the “Senketsu is like Ryuko’s dad” reading because of my shipping preferences. 

And I won’t deny that that’s definitely part of it—as an unattractive person, it subtly implies to me that I’m not worthy of romantic love—but the main reason that I’m so against the reading isn’t really because of that at all.

No, the main reason that the reading bothers me so much is because I’m tired of those who are “different” dying in the end, and the reading supposedly “justifies” this death. Ryuko has to be an adult and learn to live without Senketsu… even though Senketsu wasn’t even a year old and always grew with Ryuko, as her equal and partner. It’s so unfair to treat Senketsu as a father when he wasn’t one at all. He wasn’t old and wise; he was young and deserved to live in the world he helped save. And what do you think it says to unattractive folks like me when it’s claimed that a literal child dying is “for the best” because he helped another person grow up, and his job is thus done?

So, yes. I know I’m the laughingstock of the fandom for pairing up a girl and her shirt. But in an age where we’re being more accepting of those who are “different” from the supposed “norm,” why can’t we celebrate such a nice, good, kind representation of someone who is marginalized and “othered” instead of asserting that he should have died in the end because he had allegedly done all that he was good for?
