Day 5 of #zerowasteweek is the final day of this week long celebration and the question for today is, "What's your top tip to share with anyone wanting to start a Zero Waste journey?" My top tip for anyone who wants to start this zero waste journey, is to remember that it will take time to be satisfied with your zero waste system. There will be an overhaul of your purchases, in which you may or may not eliminate certain products from your life. Adjusting to a new lifestyle wonโt happen overnight, so just continue to work through the rooms slowly. Persistence and consistency is key to the zero waste journey. There is an adjustment to dealing with purchases and tracking those purchases as well. โ๏ธโฎโค๏ธโป๏ธ๐ฏ๐๐ What's your number one top tip to share with others? #designlifehacks #zerowaste #trash #environment #landfill #bethechange #sustainable #worldwide #world #pollution #litter #plastic #earth #ecofriendly #california #zerowastemovement #believe #community #communication #bayarea #mindfulness #zerowastejourney #care #zerowasteliving #zerowastetips #daily #recycle #zerwastehome (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTpArX0lR9v/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 4 of #zerowasteweek wants to know "What is your favorite film, book, social media channel or shop to go to". I have several social media channels that I really like to follow. I like to follow @myzerowaste @storyofstuff @zerowastehome @earth911 @thesourcezero @no_trace_shop There are a lot of zero waste social media channels now, and if you just do a hashtag search for #zerowaste, youโll find plenty of people who have taken this journey as well. A few movies that I recommend are: "The Story of Plastic", directed by Deia Schlosberg, "RiverBlue", directed by David McIlvride and Roger Williams and "Plastic China", directed by Jiu-liang Wang, Some of my other movie recommendations are: "The True Cost", directed by Andrew Morgan, "A Plastic Ocean", directed by Craig Leeson, "Wasted! The Story of Food Waste", directed by Anna Chai, Nari Kye, and "Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic?" directed by Suzan Beraza. The zero waste movement is growing, so there are a lot of media sources that are continuing to push this conversation forward. As someone who is involved with the Zero Waste Movement, I appreciate the efforts put forth by everyone. Even if you can only make one small change a day, itโs still a step forward. As for me, I will continue to upcycle, by using existing material and try to find design solutions and zero waste solutions that I can share with everyone. โ๏ธโฎโค๏ธโป๏ธ๐ฏ๐๐ What is the next step on your Zero Waste journey? #designlifehacks #zerowaste #trash #environment #landfill #bethechange #sustainable #worldwide #world #pollution #litter #plastic #earth #ecofriendly #california #zerowastemovement #believe #community #communication #bayarea #mindfulness #zerowastejourney #care #zerowasteliving #zerowastetips #daily #recycle #zerwastehome #sanjose (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTmx6TeFgGh/?utm_medium=tumblr

It's that time of the year again, Zero Waste Week (September 6 - September 10) is here and this year we are focusing on Peer-To-Peer Support. Many of us who strive to live a zero waste lifestyle have taken on the challenge to reduce our waste, but we all had rough beginnings. With the ongoing pandemic, circumstances beyond ourselves, have limited us greatly. So this year we wanted to focus on sharing our experiences and struggles of living a zero waste lifestyle. If you are interested, please check out @myzerowaste and https://www.zerowasteweek.co.uk/ and Zero Waste Week Facts (under the About section). โ๏ธโฎโค๏ธโป๏ธ๐ฏ๐๐ #designlifehacks #zerowaste #zerowasteweek #trash #environment #landfill #bethechange #sustainable #worldwide #world #pollution #litter #plastic #earth #ecofriendly #california #zerowastemovement #believe #community #communication #bayarea #mindfulness #zerowastejourney #care #zerowasteliving #zerowastetips #daily #recycle #zerwastehome #zerowastelifestyle (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTdGHNxvpjG/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 1 of #zerowasteweek, and today's discussion begins with "What was the very first thing you did to reduce your waste?" The first area I tackled was my kitchen. Honestly, the first items I chose to replace were my paper products, such as paper towels, paper napkins and sponges. I slowly audited my kitchen items and found reusable alternatives. The kitchen was fairly simple to audit because I used very few disposable items, but figuring out how to go grocery shopping without producing waste was a whole different challenge. I then moved onto the bathroom and tackled my disposable items in the bathroom. I eliminated cotton swabs, cotton pads and cotton balls. I found reusable options for those items and then moved onto finding alternative solutions for my plastic packaged products. @myzerowaste โ๏ธโฎโค๏ธโป๏ธ๐ฏ๐๐ The challenge today is, "How will you inspire others to reduce their waste today?". #designlifehacks #zerowaste #trash #environment #landfill #bethechange #sustainable #worldwide #world #pollution #litter #plastic #earth #ecofriendly #california #zerowastemovement #believe #community #communication #bayarea #mindfulness #zerowastejourney #care #zerowasteliving #zerowastetips #daily #recycle #zerwastehome #zerowastelifestyle (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTfePS_Pg9x/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 2 of #zerowasteweek continues with the question, "What's the biggest challenge you face with reducing your waste?". For me, the biggest challenge I faced to reduce my waste was trying to find bulk sections in grocery stores for shopping. Not all items offered in bulk sections fulfilled my grocery needs, so there came a point where I had to re-evaluate recipes in order to purchase less ingredients that came in plastic packaging, or I found alternative ingredients that were available in bulk sections of grocery stores. This is still an ongoing process, so this part of my zero waste journey that I must be very mindful of. I donโt purchase snacks anymore, because the majority of snack packaging will go straight to the landfill. If I do purchase a snack, I will most likely buy a fresh item, in which I can compost the wrapper. By not purchasing snacks, this changed my daily eating habits and that was an adjustment for me. @myzerowaste โ๏ธโฎโค๏ธโป๏ธ๐ฏ๐๐ Think of the biggest challenge you face with reducing your waste & try to find an alternative solution. #designlifehacks #zerowaste #trash #environment #landfill #bethechange #sustainable #worldwide #world #pollution #litter #plastic #earth #ecofriendly #california #zerowastemovement #believe #community #communication #bayarea #mindfulness #zerowastejourney #care #zerowasteliving #zerowastetips #daily #recycle #zerwastehome #zerowastelifestyle (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CThmleLnPDG/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 3 of #zerowasteweek asks, "What's your funniest Zero Waste disaster?" I remember that in the very beginning of this journey, I started shopping in the bulk section of grocery stores. At one particular grocery store, there was a bulk bin that had smoked almonds that I wanted to purchase. However, I had only brought my fine mesh bags to the store. I remember scooping the almonds into my bag, and then I examined my new selection with a grin on my face. Then the grocery store floor caught my eye. Since I was distracted, it didnโt occur to me that the seasoning from the almonds would slip right through the bottom of the mesh bag. I cleaned up the mess that I made, and placed the mesh bag inside of my larger grocery bag. I didnโt want to leave a trail of seasoning all over the grocery store. It was a bit embarrassing, but a lesson learned. I now only bring my cloth bags to the bulk section of grocery stores. @myzerowaste In the beginning of my zero waste journey, there were a lot of trial and error situations, but without them, I wouldn't have figured out an efficient system for myself. This lifestyle will have its limitations, but the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. โ๏ธโฎโค๏ธโป๏ธ๐ฏ๐๐ The challenge today is to pick up three pieces of litter, and tag #zerowasteweek in the photo. #designlifehacks #zerowaste #trash #environment #landfill #bethechange #sustainable #worldwide #world #pollution #litter #plastic #earth #ecofriendly #california #zerowastemovement #community #communication #bayarea #mindfulness #zerowastejourney #care #zerowasteliving #zerowastetips #daily #recycle #zerwastehome (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTkDhPHnoTx/?utm_medium=tumblr

Labeling switches and outlets since this pandemic has me spending more time at home. ๐ก I labeled each switch and outlet using a permanent marker on masking tape. โก๏ธI also labeled the back of each faceplate, so I could identify them individually. ๐ There are certain homes that are wired a bit differently, so there were rooms that were associated with two different electrical breakers. ๐กI also labeled the electrical breakers in the electrical panel as well. โ๏ธโฎโค๏ธโป๏ธ๐ฏ๐๐ #designlifehacks #Creative #diy #minimalism #Create #minimalist #home #house #sustainable #creativity #gogreen #ecofriendly #Zerowaste #zerodechet #hack #sustainableliving #reduce #homegoods #electric #earthfriendly #organizer #lifehacks #design #designer #zerowastehome #wastefree #zerowastelifestyle #blogger #bloggerlife #blogging (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKC6-E7nOaU/?igshid=7zl0o4y50lqj

Happy Monday!! I love my Stainless Steel Manual Coffee Grinder. It's nice to have fresh coffee grounds each morning. Although it's a bit of work before cooking the coffee grounds, I prefer using a manual grinder, so I don't have to deal with another electronic appliance. I don't like trying to remember which electrical cables arrived with which electronic product. So I will label my electrical product cables, using masking tape and permanent marker. Sometimes I will label a cable with the name of the associated product at one end of the cable, and then the type of cable at the other end. For instance, I own a few different types of HDMI cables: Type A, Type C, Type D, etc. At one end of the cable, I will label the type of cable "HDMI Type A" and at the other end I'll label the product it belongs to, "LG30". This also requires me to write tiny and very carefully, but it's worth it. I prefer to not go through the frustration of trying to figure out if I still need to keep an electrical cable, or discard it. โ๏ธโฎโค๏ธโป๏ธ๐ฏ๐๐ #designlifehacks #Creative #diy #minimalism #Create #minimalist #home #house #sustainable #creativity #gogreen #ecofriendly #Zerowaste #zerodechet #hack #sustainableliving #reduce #homegoods #electric #earthfriendly #organizer #lifehacks #design #designer #zerowastehome #wastefree #zerowastelifestyle #blogger #bloggerlife #blogging (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGagLaAngcY/?igshid=mt7zu0895tdz

ZERO WASTE WEEK: DAY#5: โReducing Food Waste is a Conscious Effort" ๐๐ฏ Most people don't realize how much food they throw away every day โ from uneaten leftovers to spoiled produce. ๐๐๐๐๐About 94 percent of the food we throw away ends up in landfills or combustion facilities. ๐๐๐๐๐ When food waste is tossed into the landfill, it rots and produces greenhouse gas like methane emission which is harmful to the climate. ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ Experts have revealed that 20% of all methane emissions contribute to climate change. ๐๐๐ค๐ฆโ๐จ๐ช๐จ By reducing food waste, you can: ๐
๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฝ โข Save money from buying less food. ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ด๐ถ๐ท โข Help reduce methane emissions from landfills and lower your carbon footprint. ๐ถ๐ฅ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฅ โข Conserve energy and resources, prevent pollution involved in the growing, manufacturing, transporting, and selling food (not to mention hauling the food waste and then landfilling it). ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ โข Support your community by providing donated untouched food that would have otherwise gone to waste to those who might not have a steady food supply.โ ๐ ๐๐ฅ๐๐จ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝโ๐ณ๐๐ผ ๐ฏโป๏ธ๐โฎ๏ธโค๏ธโ๏ธ#designlifehacks #minimalism #Create #minimalist #Tips #sustainable #zerowasteweek #creativity #gogreen #ecofriendly #Zerowaste #zerodechet #sustainableliving #reduce #food #dinner #breakfast #foodstagram #zerowasteweek #lunch #zerowastehome #refrigerator #wastefree #zerowastelifestyle #blogger #bloggers #bloggerstyle #waste #bloggerlife #groceries (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFAUuSfhglr/?igshid=zqlur3iqwrye

ZERO WASTE WEEK: DAY#4: โUse By Dates on Food" ๐๐ Many of us are aware of the Use By Dates on our foods, but do we really know what they represent? ๐
Here is a breakdown: ๐๐๐๐๐ Expiration Date: It's best not to use the product past this listed date in those cases as it signifies when the food most likely will spoil. ๐๐๐๐๐ Sell-By or Pull-By Date: This date is used by manufacturers to tell grocers when to remove their product from the shelves, but there is generally still some leeway for home usage. ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ Guaranteed Fresh Date: You will most often find this phrase on perishable baked goods, meaning that beyond this date, freshness is no longer guaranteed. However, the product may still be edible. ๐
๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฝ It's not a bad idea to follow these dates, and in some cases, it's safer to do so. ๐ถ๐ฅ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฅ But if you plan your meals, you can use up all of the ingredients in your refrigerator before these dates may apply. ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐๐ฅ๐ง Less food waste means less money waste! ๐ฐ๐ต๐ธ And a more empty (than full) refrigerator, also means you didn't waste any food or money!!! ๐๐๐๐๐ผ ๐ฏโป๏ธ๐โฎ๏ธโค๏ธโ๏ธ#designlifehacks #minimalism #Create #minimalist #Tips #sustainable #zerowasteweek #creativity #gogreen #ecofriendly #Zerowaste #zerodechet #sustainableliving #reduce #food #dinner #breakfast #foodstagram #zerowasteweek #lunch #zerowastehome #refrigerator #wastefree #zerowastelifestyle #blogger #bloggers #bloggerstyle #waste #bloggerlife #groceries (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE9vrhsBASF/?igshid=565cbbdzmdkp

ZERO WASTE WEEK: DAY#2: "How and where we shop", I like to plan my meals so that I know exactly what ingredients and produce to buy. ๐โ๏ธ๐ It saves me time and money since I don't wander around the grocery store for too long. ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐
๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ถIt also helps me stay on track with items I need versus items that I don't need. ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ I do have staple items in my pantry, but they're mostly teas and coffee grounds. โ๏ธ๐ต I tend to eat more fresh foods and rarely use many condiments. ๐ฅ๐ฏI prefer to see my refrigerator more empty than full, because I know that I'm consuming all of the foods I buy and I'm not wasting anything. ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ง๐ฅHow do you shop? ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐๐ญ๐๐ณ Do you meal plan or schedule out your meals during the month as well? ๐ฏโป๏ธ๐โฎ๏ธโค๏ธโ๏ธ#designlifehacks #minimalism #Create #minimalist #Tips #sustainable #zerowasteweek #creativity #gogreen #ecofriendly #Zerowaste #zerodechet #sustainableliving #reduce #food #dinner #breakfast #foodstagram #zerowasteweek #lunch #zerowastehome #refrigerator #wastefree #zerowastelifestyle #blogger #bloggers #bloggerstyle #waste #bloggerlife #groceries (at San Francisco Bay Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE4rAylhtjt/?igshid=16j5lqacppyos
