the success of this story completely hinges on edwina not having any actual feelings for Anthony. having her be even remotely interested fundamentally changes the entire story, imo.
This change damages both Anthony’s and Kate’s characters in a way that I don’t think is fixable. like what now?? we’re going to have Kate running around trying to separate edwina from someone she’s actually into?!? and the whole time she’s doing this we’ll know that Kate has feelings for Anthony too!!! like WHAT? this puts such an asterisk on her motivations now…like does she really love her sister or was she just trying to get her out of the way so she could have anthony for herself?
Anthony’s clownish behavior vis a vis wanting to marry Edwina is only tolerable because it results in no collateral damage because edwina *doesnt have feelings for him* now that she does, he will be world class dirtbag and his character will be virtually unsalvageable. he’s going to string her along getting her emotionally invested in him even when he is fully lusting after/making out with Kate!!
this will makes the “leads” so unlikeable! yes, they are both flawed, but we’re generally meant to think they are good people who deserve love and happiness. and now that love and happiness will come at the expense of Edwina’s feelings. how are we supposed to root for them?
This change is so unnecessary and completely incomprehensible to me. like why fix what isn’t broken?
the beauty of TVWLM is that it is decidedly NOT a love triangle. like at all!

I think today is the day I finally talk about how angry I am at Lady Danbury and Violet for letting the Edwina/Anthony engagement get as far as it did.
In my first couple watches of the season, I absolutely loved Lady D and Violet, and I still do love them as characters. I also particularly loved Ruth Gemmel in the flashback scenes and in the scenes with Anthony in episode 5, 7, and 8.
However, in my last rewatch I was annoyed and confused by them. As great they are as characters are, it does not excuse the writing that made them encourage Anthony to propose to edwina knowing he did not love her and knowing edwina wanted love in her marriage.
Episodes 2,3, and 4 particularly are where I get most confused by their writing this season. In season 1, they were champions of true love. Particularly Lady D when she told Simon that leading Daphne on if he did not plan to propose was cruel. That was such a good moment for her! Ignoring the weird part in season 1 episode 4 where she says true love solves racism (I’m not even going to touch that), you can see that Lady Danbury believes in the true love and it’s power. And we all know Violet just wants each of her children to experience true love.
Where was this attitude in episode 3 when Lady tried to force Anthony’s hand to propose at the dinner?! Where was this when they were eavesdropping outside rooms and looking pleased with themselves knowing that Anthony did not feel anything but duty for edwina?? Or in episode 4 when edwina is clearly deluding herself about Anthony and no one says anything?!
Kate was the only person to tell edwina the truth from the start about Anthony not looking for love in marriage and she was vilified for it (we’re not going into that in this post I have too many thoughts). Violet and Lady D knew the entire time that Anthony simply saw Edwina as a duty and allowed this to happen despite them both being champions of true love in season 1, and Violet telling Anthony that he deserves the same love her and his father shared in episode 5.
Lady D knew that Anthony and Kate had feelings for each other, but her advice to Kate was convoluted and odd throughout, telling her to hide her feelings one day and the next telling her to share.
I will also die on the hill of saying Violet also knew, and the writers made her intentionally obtuse this season for reasons. It’s absurd to me that Violet had to wait for Daphne to confirm things when we had several shots of her from episode 2 on noticing Anthony staring at Kate. We all know daphne knew, but I don’t think she had the power that Violet and Lady D have in the situation and she tried her best (I think it would’ve been amazing and hilarious if she challenged Kate to a duel to get back at Anthony for last season but that’s me being petty).
I think the writers simply wanted drama for the sake of drama this season which is why they wrote several characters inconsistently, including Violet and Lady D (don’t get me started on edwina and Mary and the lack of support for Anthony from many of the bridgerton siblings - looking at you benedict and Colin). Drama is not a bad thing, but if you have to change characters, not to mention several characters to get a situation you want re: failed edwina/Anthony wedding, pre&post- wedding angst and longing, and resulting scandal, that is not good writing or good televison. It is frustrating for viewers to watch because the resulting conflict and resolution does not feel earned, it can be difficult to follow, and the resulting resolution is not satisfying,
Anyways tldr; for the sake of creating more drama, the Bridgerton writers changed the characterization of Lady Danbury and Violet against championing true love for parts of the season. They made Lady D encourage a proposal she knew was out of duty and made Violet intentionally blind to Anthony’s feelings for Kate so we could get the drama of a failed Edwina/Anthony wedding.

What do people make of Chris Van Dusen’s interview with TVLine where he said that Edwina wouldn’t attend Kate and Anthony’s wedding?
For me, it goes on to show that the showrunner really didn’t understand the characters and their motivations at all. Also goes on to show that there is nothing feminist about Edwina’s arc, and the writers have no concept of sisterhood. It’s horrible, especially because in the books, Kate and John/Michael are the only ones to have supportive and loving natal families that don’t need to be rescued by the Bridgertons. The Bridgertons continue to have great relationships with Sheffields and Stirlings in the books.
This whole process of isolating the woman from her natal family after marriage in the form of rescuing is ugly and deeply misogynistic. That actually renders the woman helpless in case her married home is abusive in any manner. And in case of the show, the whole thing was contrived. In the book, Kate’s father was the second son of a baton, so not necessarily the ton but not poverty stricken either. Expanding the gulf between Kate and Anthony to play up the India angle was foul.
I wonder if that’s why they haven’t had any promotion focussing only on SA and JB and CC has been thrust into all interviews that should have only focussed on JB and SA. I also wonder if that is why CC deleted her Twitter account because of the backlash against the triangle, and how much worse it would get once the season was out. The production team and CC probably realised that the criticism (and honestly the bullying) would get much worse given the story but it was too late to do anything about it.

The sheer amount of ego CVD has to claim that their Edwina is not only a "fully realized character" but to also say that in the show she "has feelings and thoughts" and called her book counterpart "a lot less dimensional" and "a prop" when Show!Edwina did nothing but moon over Anthony, yell at Kate, and was specifically written to be an obstacle to the Kanthony/Kathony relationship.
We got no scenes from her perspective until the wedding scene, which was poorly set up and we were not privy to any of Edwina's thoughts except that she wanted to marry Anthony. Yes, we got a really nice scene with the King and Queen, but that was the extent of her POV. Why doesn't she want to marry Anthony outside of his connection with Kate? Why is she still mad at Kate? Is she comfortable with Kate weeding out suitors or is she more like Daphne and wishes to figure them out on her own? How much do we really know about Edwina Sharma outside of what is TOLD to us?
I don't know how to tell you this, but if your main takeaway from the book is that Edwina's character is little more than a prop and "kind" then you thoroughly misunderstood the character and the book itself.
Book!Edwina is kind, yes, but she's also intelligent and perceptive and has an idea of what she wants. She wants to marry a scholar, someone she can discuss ideas and books with without feeling like a trophy. But she's also willing to put that aside to support her family, something she shares with Kate. And yes, Book!Edwina doesn't have much of a role to play in the book outside of being the younger sister and supporting Kate in all endeavors, but neither does Eloise or Daphne outside of their own books.
There are so many ways you could've expanded upon Edwina's character without shoving her greatest strengths in the garbage. You could've made her more mischievous, or actually shown her dealing with the heavy expectations placed upon her. Instead we got one scene in 2x03 to set up her breakdown in 2x06 with nothing in-between. She's innocent but not naive, kind but not a doormat, and believes the best in people. She represents a lot of women who feel like they can't say no to things because they're kind and sweet and they don't want to hurt anyone's feelings and CVD took that away from them in favor of a storyline that nobody wanted or asked for in any capacity.
To call your version of the character "fully realized" and "not a prop" is insulting to Julia Quinn's work and her characterization and I for one, am tired of men constantly claiming that their version of things is the superior one.
Edwina Sharma deserved better and I won't ever shut up about it.
