clothes pog??: an analysis of the Song outfits in this piece
Tumblr media
[ID: a portrait of the Song family from Keeper of the Lost Cities; the four of them are in various types of formal wear and have neutral facial expressions, with their Atlantis estate brightly lit in the background. end ID.]
welcome to analysis of this one piece that I yelled about with my sister for like???? an hour??? their outfits pain me so I will provide some info on exactly why these are some of the oddest Asian-inspired things I’ve ever seen children’s book illustration wise and then also add in some nicer outfit alternatives :)
quick warning for heavy swearing and lots of bad grammar, and that the rest of the IDs are going to be in alt text.

this acc has been soooo inactive but imagine kotlc but ya/new adult and more dystopian like. the premise is acc soooooo interesting like the elves. the eugenics. the fucking matchmaking system. actually developing the side characters. giving sophie a proper character arc!!! not dragging out a love triangle no one cares about. like guys it could’ve been everything

warning incoming essay but when i say that 10-12 episodes for hsmtmts isn’t enough i genuinely mean it like look at the past 2 seasons they’ve crammed like 14 storylines and it truly just doesn’t work. in s1 them not resolving stuff was a funny quirk but in s2 it got to the point where it was genuinely frustrating like what happened to the rose song what is going on. i haven’t even seen s3 yet but it’s probably gotten worse atp bc s1 most of the focus was abt rini/beginning stages of pw and like very very slight focus on some of the other characters. i love that they’re focusing more on ashlyn carlos and the other characters but they need more screentime for it to be done properly!!!! not even mentioning how they throw in like 10 side characters w FAR more interesting storylines like HOWIE and maddox and jet like pls bring back 22 episode seasons so we can have the overarching plot of the musicals plus all of the backstage drama bc i’m sick of not getting shit fleshed out!! and i wanna see the actual musical like the rehearsals and the music and everything. like come on ik the hsmtmts writers can do better

Something that pisses me off every time I think about it is how when Maya “became Riley”, her defining moment for when she changed was when Shawn bought her clothes. When she got hope and something good for the first time in her life.
She got told that who she was when she had hope and good things was not herself. Her getting good grades in school and trying to be better and liking a nice boy was not herself. She got shoved back to living a life with constant reminders that life will always hurt you someway or another.
Then, she got all her credibility taken away by Farkle and Riley (unintentionally obviously) because they both weren’t willing to change their group dynamic for her growth and let go of their past. They constantly told her she didn’t know how she felt about Lucas and kept pushing the stupid triangle thing in. It got to the point where she had to manipulate the situation again from behind the scenes to get Riley and Lucas together for Riley to be happy by taking the easy way out and agreeing with Josh saying she never really liked Lucas and was only trying to protect Riley. Josh, who has been there for like four episodes and never actually saw how her and Lucas interacted.
Anyway I miss Maya growing and Lucaya being cute and I can’t believe we were robbed of their endgame.

i think the worst kind of love to feel for a piece of media is “this is mostly garbage but there’s just enough good there that i wish it was better”

what you think you know
fandom: Keeper of the Lost Cities
wordcount: 2587
relationships: Linh and the Keeper Crew (minus wylie who is never mentioned), and Linh to her parents
summary:  When she was eleven Linh flooded a city and choked on all of it, the terror, the calling. They sank down and down and Linh flailed out onto the shore weeping and with her mother’s fingers tight around her arm, with her father’s disapproval cloying on her tongue. Tam pulled her out of their parents’ grip and the ocean roared at them louder than anything Linh has ever come to know, blue blue blue and whipping into the shape of her name. It clawed at her lungs like it wanted to fill them with seawater, like thousands of people was never going to be enough, like it would take devouring her beating heart whole for it to stop.
part of the tell me: series, a group of character studies of the neglected characters of kotlc (can be found on ao3 by user anneblacks)
notes: so many things. so many notes. he/she marella. if you are still confused at the end of the fic pls refer to the ao3 notes which are 80 times more intensive and explain everything I cannot in a tumblr post at 12 in the morning. to summarize i thought about linh too hard this week and then projectile-vomited a year’s worth of worldbuilding and internet-learned nonsense (there’s a glossary in the ao3 notes lmao). pls forgive me

It is most commonly known in China as this: prosperity, good fortune, longevity. In Southeast Asia it is a sign of beauty and skill. In this courthouse, Linh doesn't know what it means that the walls are jade as far as she can see.
(That the designers had a thing for showing off wealth and exploiting labor classes, maybe.)
pinterest-study-turned-Linh-thinkpiece, something about the jade council house and being the subject of speculation and about being kind when all odds tell you Not to be

I don't think Shannon has actually decided on a specific personality for Fintan.
Half the time, he's this solemn serious noble elf who's deeply concerned about the state of the world and is willing to do what it takes to fix it. (Like in Exile, Everblaze, and Flashback)
In the other half, he's manipulative and power-hungry and creepy and is trying to regain his former power so he can rule the world. (Like in Lodestar and Nightfall)
And in the third half of the time (it's the weekend, I don't want to do math), he's an impulsive little over-dramatic gremlin who makes puns about fire and laughs a lot. (Like in Neverseen and at various points in the other books)
And he's constantly switching between these three versions of Fintan.

Gotta say, out of all the "interesting" writing choices Shannon has made, having the gnomes immediately go back to the elves when their surface level problems have been controlled(and not even by the government, Sophie and her friends were totally alone on that one. The council did practically nothing) THE WAY SHE WROTE NEVERSEEN was probably the weirdest way to handle it, and it has SUCH a colonizer perspective, bc of COURSE the gnomes wouldn't want their own homeland because they are so so safe with the elves. Of COURSE they would NEVER want to break away from the elves bc the elves bring world peace and they are oh so smart and diplomatic. Except for the times when the government ignored their plight during a genocidal plague. Except for the time the elves refused to fight the perpetrator bc of "diplomacy". Except for the fact that elven civilization rests on gnomish slavery and complacency. Except for the fact that gnomish inventions feed the entire elven population. Except for the propaganda that the gnomes are fed that they are weak. Except for the time when the government exiled another species that stepped out of line, dooming them to preventable diseases and generally a technologically less complex system. Somehow, wrapped up in the gnomes you have not only class warfare, but racism AND a colonial attitude all wrapped up in a neat little package, and while I wish I could say this was a purposeful critique of modern racial attitudes I am pretty sure it WASN'T

On Tam Song in fandom and the submissive/effeminate Asian stereotype
(+ also why aren’t we talking about Tam more he’s a solid character lmao)
Okay, so, I have thoughts. And the thoughts belong to me! They’re for the most part my personal opinion and based off of the part of my experiences that come from my being East Asian (ish), and I’m definitely open to discussion on it. These thoughts are messy opinionated stuff, not the law, and they’re also not a response to anything specific; was just thinking about some things I’ve observed and wanted to say some things. We’re not talking about Linh right now even though ofc there are some huge problems with how Shannon’s written her—the fact that she’s the Nice Girl, squeamish with blood after two years in exile and having flooded two extremely large cities, and portrayed as weak even with her incredible ability—Evren (Holes) covered this in her post about the Song family before leaving tumblr. but we’re focusing on Tam right now, and also more specifically how I’ve seen some people treating Tam in fandom when they take away the edgy archetype to try and explore his character more, because I don’t think anyone really has.
