Why does grief hold such profound power over us? Our fondest memories are quick to become our most dangerous enemies, slicing deep into the heart at a predatory speed. We are left breathless, frightened, more vulnerable than we had ever hoped to be. I know many friends whose grief became their defining factor, the sole mitigator on a path of self-destruction. It's so easy to hold on to pain when the only other option is understanding. I am a simple person, I want my friends to know peace. I want to help them find gratitude, at least in me. I want their memories to bask in the sunlight that was their most beloved. Masking the pain is only a temporary salve on an eternally bloodied wound. We have to learn how to be vulnerable, it’s the only way to let new love grow.

I'm glad I found my friend out here tonight. In the cover of night, evil knows no boundaries, and I too have found myself lost in the darkness. The stillness of a calm pond in the dead of summer, the way it almost invites you to rest in its stagnant water, how far too many times we have almost taken it up on its offer. This time around, however, I am the comforting arm around the shoulders. We walked off of that pier together, stumbling our way home in an amicable silence. I could sleep well knowing my friend was safe, at least for tonight.
