The things the Hargreeves each say to Vanya in the brain eating scene match up perfectly with how they see themselves/who they are.
Klaus accuses her of faking it, when we see a performance from him for the entirety of the show. He fakes almost everything the family sees from him.
Luther accuses her of not trying hard enough, and we know that Luther thinks he wasn't a good enough Number One. He pins this on himself completely.
Allison accuses her of using her powers too much and not being able to handle the consequences. This TOTALLY follows with her s1 plotline and her decision to use and use of her powers in s2.
Ben says that she isn't ready and it isn't her fault. This is how Ben views his death, we know from s1.
Diego and Five don't say anything because they don't REALLY know themselves at all. These two have declined getting to know themselves in favor of dedicating themselves to saving others. Diego literally says he doesn't have daddy issues. Diego. And Five does not know who he is without an apocalypse, or what to do with himself when it's over.
I think this is interesting. I dunno. I don't think any of these people (except Ben) ACTUALLY feel this way about Vanya. It's an analysis on them, done by Vanya in Vanya's head, but because Vanya is the way she is, it gets directed at her.

While rewatching season 1 I noticed this conversation in the background in episode 6 that I didn't even remember happening;
Diego: "Well, I'm going after Hazel and Cha-Cha."
Luther: "What, right now?"
D: "Hell yeah. Three days and I'm losing light by the minute."
L: "Wait, Diego! Look...I know you wanna avenge your friend but we go-
D, yelling angrily: "She wasn't just some friend!"
So in conclusion...I'm never going to shut up about Diego and Eudora and there is nothing you can do about it.

Okay but has Diego actually murdered someone before?
At first you might say "well, duh, he hunts criminals down for a living" but when you really stop and think about it, there is not a single instance shown in the two season where he actually kills someone. At least not that I remember. He's always just knocking someone out or pinning them down with his knives or just making sure to immobilize his enemy, but actual killing?
I mean, he was even determined not to kill Oswald, merely cut off his trigger fingers (which is still dumb BUT if he's not willing to kill the guy who literally assassinated Kennedy, then he's really gotta be against it).
The closest he's been to killing someone on-screen was when he fought cha-cha in 10x01 to avenge Eudora but even then he stopped himself and let her live.
The one scene that's a bit unclear is in 01x02 where Five first arrives in '63 and witnesses the apocalypse, because Diego does fight off a few soldiers but there's no way to tell if he just knocked them out or if they're actually dead.
I'm thinking he might actually have this moral code where, no matter what, he will not kill anyone, because that's not what heroes do, right? They save lives, not take them.

Okay but...in the season 1 finale where Klaus manages to manifest Ben to help fight, 'only' Luther, Five and Allison see Ben. They stare in awe and even remark that, yes, all of them are actually seeing their brother Ben.
Vanya and Diego don't get to see that. Vanya is in her white violin state being busy playing, yknow, the violin and Diego is backstage fighting Cha-Cha for his own cause.
Then in season 2 Diego and Vanya are the (only) ones who get to interact with Ben (not counting Klaus obviously).
I don't even think that is a coincidence and I'm just glad everyone truly got to see Ben once.

3 (other) reasons why Diego's & Lila's relationship is probably doomed
So many people have already established that a relationship between these two might not be the greatest idea after the things she did to him this season, so I'm not getting into that, instead I'm going to focus on different things that strike me as difficult.
1. Unstoppable force + unstoppable force
Many people say that Diego and Lila fit together so well because they both have this reckless and borderline crazy way of doing things, but I don't think that's a particularly good thing. They're both head-strong and stubborn as shit so I imagine that, if they disagree on something, it'd be nasty.
Bare with me as I compare it to Diego and Eudora aka unstoppable force + immovable object. Eudora, while also head-strong, is more of a calm and collected individual that evens out with Diego's wild, over-the-top attitude. Yes, they did break up because they had their differences about how to go about some things because Eudora doesn't share Diego's recklessness, which wouldn't apply to Lila, but oh Diego and Lila would absolutely disagree on other things and because they're both this unstoppable force, it wouldn't be pretty.
2. minus × minus doesn't always equal plus
What I mean by that is that they both have issues. A lot of them. And, think what you will, but you can't go and attempt to fix someone else (aka your partner) if you haven't fixed yourself. If they both lean onto each other for support, they're going to crumble eventually. Sure, they may find a sort of solace within each other because they understand each other in their abusive upbringing, but that doesn't make for a great relationship.
3. Lila does not need a relationship right now
This is an addition to my last point. See, Lila just realized how she had been abused and manipulated throughout her childhood. She needs to work through this first.
Diego realized this all the way back in his late teenage years probably, and while it's going to stick with him forever, he's had all these years to process what happened and try to move on. He's had those idk 12-14 years or something to free himself from the abuse and build a life outside of it. He's learnt to live his own life and he's also learnt that this abusive and manipulative bullshit isn't right and tries to be better. He's found "friends" and he even had a relationship before that generally seemed to have been pretty good.
Lila is nowehere near any of that yet. Up until now she lived a lie believing the Handler loved her and only wanted the best for her. Lila doesn't even know what a healthy relationship is like, hence why she continues to mistreat Diego throughout season 2. She just doesn't know any better and thinks that's how you do things. Someone like her needs time to process this and learn how to engage in a life away from her abuser and how to build healthy relationships. If you just throw her into a relationship now, it's not going to go well. Give her a bit of time and things will look different. Give her a therapist instead of a relationship.

I just fucking realized in that scene in 02x10 where Five & Diego talk with the Handler & Lila, the Handler goes "All of you are going to die today" and Diego replies with "Well I don't like your chances. Seven of us, two of you."
Seven of us
Seven
The only people next to the hargreeves sibs there are Sissy and Harlan but I highly doubt he meant either of them.
The seventh one is Ben. Because he saw Ben and he talked to Ben and fuck Diego doesn't know that Ben is gone yet again. I don't know whether it makes me more emotional that he actively includes Ben again or that he would be right if it wasn't for 02x09....

I just rewatched eudora's death + diego's reaction to finding her and I am literally a sobbing mess I still can't do this. It's been over a year. Bullshit for Diego to move on within 3 months when I'm still over here bawling my eyes out 17 months later
Just the way he cradles her face and cries and the way this year's love plays in the background I...I don't even cry at these kinda things a lot but man this hurts so much, the only other scene that comes remotely close is the "can you hug me as I go?" scene....

My god, in the first scene we see where Diego and Eudora interact (01x02), Eudora ends up telling him "I do not need- I do not want your help" and then in 04 she calls him for backup and the last thing Diego says before he heads to the motel and finds her is "She needs my help..." and then seconds later this year's love starts playing and it cuts to the motel....
Yeah, that parallel didn't hurt at all haha

Something else I find really interesting is how they want you to think Diego is a bad guy at the beginning of season 1.
Sure, his introduction scene shows him saving this family from being robbed, but throughout the entire first episode, they really don't make him look particularly good. It's not hard to get the idea that the knife carrying guy in the black suit might just be up to something shady.
He acts hostile towards practically all his siblings, specifically Vanya by telling her she doesn't belong there and Luther cus...it's Luther. He's the one who speaks up about how Reginald was a monster and a horrible father during the funeral.
Then there's this thing where Luther is convinced Reginald had been murdered so he looks for evidence and gets suspicious about the missing monocle, saying that whoever had the monocle must be the murderer. Then one of the very last scenes in the first episode shows Diego ominously standing there with the monocle. This, combined with his earlier accusations towards Reginald, definitely does make him look suspicious and the viewer is made to believe that would be a bad thing since Reggie's abuse hasn't been depicted yet.
Basically, the first episode makes Diego out to be quite the asshole (for what yet appears to have no actual reason) and the potential murderer of their father.
This villain-vibe wears off quickly however. Not soon after we get to know that Diego only had the monocle because he found it in Grace's stuff and that he just wanted to protect his mother because he loves and cares about her so much. Then she dies and it's the first time we see Diego truly emotional. The viewer starts to see that Diego isn't a total asshole and can actually care about people.
This is further emphasized by his relation to Eudora. We learn that they used to be a thing (yet still care about each other) and then he loses her as well. And when he found her on that motel floor, it really hit how much Diego actually cares.
He spends the rest of season 1 determined to avenge Eudora's death, occasionally bonds a bit with his mother and starts looking out for Klaus a lot, further stressing that he doesn't hate all his siblings that much.
And then by the time season 2 happens, the initial bad guy thing is all but gone. He spends the entire season being a soft himbo and caring about all of his siblings to the point where he even admits that he loves them by the end of season 2. Nothing of that acting hostile and defensive and being an asshole anymore. Just a guy who cares about his family. And I absolutely live for that development.

Diego Hargreeves is autistic and has ADHD
Note: this is based on my specific experiences with these neurological disorders. Autistic people and ADHD people are not a monolith, and we all have different experiences.
Autistic:
Wears the same thing all the time (safe sensory stimuli)
Covers his ears when hearing gunfire (aka, everything is Too Loud, there is Too Much going on)
Not good with words, better with actions
Has a speech impediment
Special interest in knives
He has trouble communicating (episode 3; he tells Vanya “you could have been killed!” and Allison has to step in and translate what he means for Vanya, which is something I’ve experienced for one example, and in episode 4 with Eudora, he can’t find the words to talk about his mom, or say what he needs. That resonated very deeply with me)
High Empathy
ADHD (Combined Type):
Impulsive as shit (jumping through that goddamn window for one)
Very reckless with his own safety
Runs towards trouble, not away from it
Stims with his knives

Time to pop the question:
Does Diego have ADHD or a form of autism? Cus you can't tell me this boy ain't neurodivergent. You can pry that observation from my cold, dead hands.

The absolute irony that, when Diego and Five go out to find Reginald, they have this short talk about how Five can still hear Reginald in his head and how he hears him say "I told you so" and Diego comforts Five by assuring him that Reginald won't be able to tell him that anymore.
Then fast forward to the assassination of JFK where Diego ends up finding the note from Reginald reading "I told you so". Well...I suppose at least Diego was right about Reggie not saying that to Five anymore.
Also same energy as Diego telling Luther "He [Reggie] shanked your heart" but then getting his heart shanked by him (again) during that supper lmao. Let this boy catch a break man
