Fanfiction culture has become an incredibly toxic place for me over the last few years, and it’s really started to hit me this year how bad it really is. I’ve watched creator after creator delete their tumblrs, delete their fics, delete entire worlds they’ve come up with, all because of factors that are far too prevalent among fans etc.
I’ve helped friends deal with, and dealt with myself, situations where fics are re-posted, with or without credit but never with permission, seen fics with there names changed and passed off as the work of another author for another fandom as if that will prevent them from being caught, and I’ve watched as slowly, slowly creators just stopped putting up a fight because what’s the point.
I’ve watched authors be attacked for not updating on time, or for being too sick (mentally, physically, etc.) to write any more of their recent fic, seen fans demand a sequel that the author doesn’t even want to write as if it’s owed to them.
I’ve seen fans steal copies of people’s works and re-post them when the creator chooses to delete, defending themselves by saying it’s their favorite fic and they didn’t want to lose “ownership” over it, but that right there is the problem in itself.
Fanfiction writers don’t get paid to write you fics. They have lives, and school, and sometimes even jobs that they have to deal with every single day to make sure that they can live the life they want to live. They come home at night, and they choose to spend their free time writing fanfiction for themselves and the world to enjoy, but they don’t get paid for this. They don’t get piad, and they be no means have to write anything, let alone what you demand of them.
And it’s heartbreaking really, because I’m watching my friends get broken down by demands for more more more, and I watch them cry over the fact that it isn’t even encouragement or supportive comments - it’s just a constant barrage of where are you, why haven’t you done this, i want an update, i hate waiting, and it’s tearing us apart.
I hardly see supportive feedback anymore. When it’s there, it’s wonderful and amazing and reminds me why I love to write so much, but unfortunately in life, the bad eclipses’s the good, and it’s discouraging. It’s so discouraging that I’ve watched amazing creator after amazing creator given up and delete, and I’m tired.
I am so, so tired of hating myself and my writing because all it brings me is grief - why didn’t you do this, this would have been better, you should have reversed the roles, this trope is so old
you haven’t updated in two months, why did you start posting if you weren’t going to finish
being ace is unfair to the other character, he should be more understanding of his partners needs
We, as fanfiction writers, put these fics out there for you to enjoy, but we also do it for ourselves, and I’m tired of being underappreciated and harassed
If you don’t want your favorite fanfictions deleted, support the author
If you want an author to update, remind them how much you love their fic, but understand that life can be hard
If you don’t enjoy something personally, remember that an authors writing decisions are not based on you
In the new year, I hope to see more of my friends and myself appreciated rather than torn down for all the work that we do, because I know I’m not the only one suffering from the actions of our fans

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.
I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!
From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!
I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.
The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.
(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)
Tumblr media
If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.
Tumblr media
The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.
insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
delete -> self explanatory
on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic
The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.
Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

In cosmic dust, Thace states that Kolivan didn’t tell Krolia about Keith being on central command so does Krolia find out before she meets Keith or doesn’t know anything, like canon ?
While she was kept very much in the dark while Keith was on Central Command, his reputation after he escapes very much proceeds him... so she's very aware that Keith is in space, though she doesn't know how he got there. She's definitely going to push Kolivan for some answers...

As an Paladin of the Galra empire what is Keith’s official title? Imperial Paladin? Also what power does his unique position give him?
He's just called the red paladin! No need for any fancy titles other than that. He's in an odd spot, because he definitely is in a position of authority, but he's also very visibly half-Galra in an Empire that doesn't think much of those with mixed blood, so while he has the ability to command even those in the upper ranks if it assists with his missions, that's not to say they'll all carry out those orders faithfully.
(Of course, this is something he can use to his advantage, so he doesn't mind. Why couldn't he finish off those rebels and let them escape? Well, the Commander he was working with got in the way and prevented it. Perhaps you should question their motivations a little more closely.)

Man. Everyone in flicker will Explode once the paladins arrive, huh. I can't wait to see how flicker Allura and Keith interact when its in person and not vague dreamscape. Its always so fun seeing the different dynamics you give to Allura and Keith. Like they're always different but always so distinctly in character. Like look at Long Live the Queen. Absolutely infected my brain with Keith and Allura thoughts.
It's definitely going to be a wild time for everyone involved! They've never met him, but he's been skirting the edge of their lives for ages now. He's Krolia's half-human son. Adam and Veronica both adopted him while they were gone and Lance's family has accepted him as one of their own. Colleen and Sam are considering adoption as well.
And always glad to hear that I've injected the Allura and Keith thoughts into your head. They have such a great dynamic together that I think goes unexplored both in canon and in fandom spaces, which is a total shame!!!

i think it's great when someone tries to pull off a tragic self-sacrifice in a story and there's at least one guy who's just like "no this is fucking stupid actually. you're an idiot." about it. because it kind of is. i love a good tragedy but let's be honest with ourselves if a friend tried to indulge a noble sacrifice fantasy would you not be a little annoyed. like come on man.

So in the undercover blade au, what does Keith’s Imperial Paladin armor look like. Is it similar to the paladin armor but black and red. And what symbol would he have on his chest. The Paladin V or the Imperial Sigil?
In my head it takes strong notes from the Lieutenant style armor (the kind Krolia wears) while having more obvious red accents to denote his status as the red paladin. The chest decoration mirrors that of Zarkon's armor, to signify Keith's unique ranking in the Empire as a paladin (and as the right arm of Voltron, no less).

want to be clear that if i ever talk about a headcanon and then later discuss a headcanon that is directly contradictory to the first one, that’s because headcanons exist in a quantum state where they are all simultaneously true and not true up until the point where i discuss it in detail, in which case that is the one that is true in that instance. schroedinger’s headcanons

With Keith’s eye turning yellow, does he lose his pupils and irises or just his sclera are yellow?
I think they're a solid yellow! A Keith who looks almost human except for having the solid yellow pupilless eyes common amongst Galra is not a look I've done before.

Keith's gang of delinquents are more troublemakers than rebels, though all its members are outcasts of the Galra Empire in some way. When Keith shows up with the Champion in tow, they just shrug. The authorities aren't going to hear about this from THEM.
You guys really liked @bookwyrmie's idea of Heath joining the rebels when I wrote that drabble for it, and honestly? This seems like a good AU to put an idea like this in. He escaped from captivity, but Keith was long gone by the time he did. He's looking for his wife *and* his son.
Keith was around four/five when he and his dad were taken by the Empire. He barely remembers his dad or his home planet, and his English is extremely rusty.
He was given a new name upon being taken into the Empire, but he doesn't use it anymore. The name his dad gave him is all he has left of his heritage.
He still has Krolia's knife. The Galra that captured him didn't know what it meant.
Due to gradual quintessence exposure growing up, his eyes turned yellow over the years.
Keith's considered the second in command of his little ragtag group of delinquents. New members quickly learn that though he's small, he's tough.
He's heard of Voltron, but only as something that the treasonous King Alfor stole from Emperor Zarkon after he destroyed their home world. He's... skeptical of the story, to say the least. He doesn't even believe Voltron exists (until it's proven it definitely does).
But him? A paladin? The way Allura describes them, he doesn't feel like he's the type. He's a petty criminal- he's not some noble hero. He doesn't think he has what it takes to be one.
thinking about that idea where Keith really is a port brat raised on the fringes of the Galra Empire but taking it in a different direction this time. He was still born on Earth, and Krolia left him and his dad like she does in canon, but they later wind up abducted when the Galra come back a third time (though Heath manages to prevent them from finding out about the blue lion).
The Galra establish that Keith is half-Galra, so he's separated from his dad at a young age to be raised as a part of the Empire. He runs away when he's a teenager, and ends up as part of a group of Galra delinquents who typically make trouble for the soldiers while dodging the draft themselves. He's passively looking for his dad (he can barely remember him) and is not really looking for his mom at all when he hears a rumor that the current Champion looks just like him.
When he hears that he'll be brought to the colony he lives in... curiosity gets the best of him. He wants to see this Champion for himself.

Shiro's promised to take him back to Earth.
Shiro's also definitely shocked when he pulls down his hood and takes off his half-mask. Huh. Guess he mistook him for a full blooded Galra. Isn't *that* novel?
All they have to do now is dodge the patrols and steal a ship that can get them that far. The first part is easy. The second part is a little harder, but they still manage. They take shifts flying the ship- Shiro used to be a pilot back on Earth, and Keith has stolen a ship or two in his days for a joyride.
Shiro's the one with a bunch of questions now- how'd he end up this far out in space? Who are his parents? Keith doesn't have much of an answer to give him. His dad's probably human, and he came from Earth, but he doesn't no much about himself beyond that. He never knew his mom, and he hasn't seen his dad in over ten years.
Shiro helps teach him the language- or remind him of what he already knew. It comes in handy when they land their ship and they're both immediately taken into custody by something called the Galaxy Garrison. They're especially wary of him- and for Keith's part, it's weird to be surrounded by people who look just like his dad.
(And somewhere, out in the desert, he can feel a faint pull...)

Someone is waiting for him when his match ends.
Shiro can't really see their face- it's obscured by a hood and a half mask, but he can tell from their yellow eyes that they're Galra. They're not wearing the armor he's gotten used to, but he can still tell that the chest plate they're wearing used to be a piece of the stuff. Something tells him that they're not with the Empire- and that they're also not supposed to be here.
(They're also... shorter than most Galra he's seen thus far. A child?)
They ask him what his name is. That's unexpected.
The Galra asks him a few questions- mostly about Earth. Shiro is hesitant to answer, in case this is some kind of new trick. Their conversation is cut short when a guard comes to get him, and the strange Galra disappears.
They're back the next day, and the next- Shiro has a feeling he'll be seeing them all week, until the ship he's one leaves for the next port. A kind of 'grand tour' for their prized Champion, if you can call it that. The last day he's scheduled to be here, the kid- and it is a kid, Shiro's pretty sure- looks antsy.
"Do you want to get out of here?"
Shiro blinks. Asks him to repeat the question.
"Do you want to get out of here?"
Ah. That's what he thought he said. In which case... yes. Yes he does. Very much.
(He swears the kid is grinning underneath his mask.)
