it's upsetting that it took algorithms threatening to replace interpersonal relationships and devaluing art with cheap copies for people to start caring about AI, and by extension the over-automation of the modern world. we are creating a world where there will be no room for humanity, where everything we have to "offer" will be rendered redundant.

it began with workers being deprived of honest work, going from farmers, miners, and factory workers to working shifts at mcdonalds, and it will end with us being deprived of everything that makes us human in the name of efficiency. art and love, the things we humans value as the CORE of what makes us human, is being automated by strings of code with neither a soul nor even any degree of self-awareness, let alone actual genuine emotion.

i don't know how, but it's even possible someone might some day invent an automated form of religion and philosophy. not sure how, but then again who expected ai girlfriends?

Greg Isenberg, a tech exec from Miami, recently took to X and explained how he believes the AI Girlfriend industry will rise up to take a slice of profit from Match Group.

For those unfamiliar, Match Group is the company that owns Tinder, Hinge, Match.com, OKCupid, Plenty of Fish, and several others. They currently sit at a market valuation of over $9 Billion USD.

According to Greg, the market is primed and ready for the AI-equivalent of Match Group to rise up and make $1B+. If the concept of AI girlfriends and people who spend on them sounds ridiculous to you, Greg based his assertion off a real-life experience.

His theory comes from a recent conversation with a 24-year-old in Miami. The 24-year-old admitted he spends around $10,000 per month on AI girlfriends.

Greg was initially speechless but then he listed the various reasons provided

"Some people play video games, I play with AI girlfriends"

"I love that I could use voice notes now with my AI girlfriends"

"I get to customize my AI girlfriend. Likes, dislikes etc. It's comfort at the end of the day".

There are currently several AI dating startups. According to Greg, the 24-year-old said "There are a few platforms he likes but he prefers candy dot ai and kupid dot ai"

"In case you were wondering, AI boyfriends exist too. And this category will probably thrive too" he added as he finished his thread of posts.

In a world where we're already critical and seeing the repercussions of dating apps that can at times warp our view of other humans and relationships, AI dating could take this to a whole other level.

why they expected corporations to prioritize the mental health of their customers over profit is beyond me. OF COURSE they're going to try to get their customers into a toxic cycle of dependency. they get more money over time that way. and corporations are notorious for selling people's data. it's what they do, MAKE MONEY.

you shouldn't always expect the worst from people, because most people are basically decent; but you should ALWAYS expect the worst from corporations, because their business model rewards predatory behavior with wealth.

Today I learned that a joint study by Virginia and Harvard universities found that more than half of their test subjects would rather self-administer electric shocks upon themselves than sit in silence with just their own thoughts for entertainment for 15 minutes. There's a whole sub-genre of red-pilled YouTube which is just compilations of women regretting their past actions and/or realizing that feminism lied to them and that they actually do need the other half of the human race.

I mean; there's certainly truth to what the makers are getting at, but it's a manifestation of an ugly and voyeuristic aspect of humanity that the internet has massively amplified and pandered to, in which the suffering and distress of other human beings is presented as entertainment consumed at a remove.

Whatever camp you are in, this is an incredibly unhealthy and divisive way to routinely look at one's neighbours; it's bad for us and it's bad for societies and any semblance of community, and snidely laughing at every woman going through hardships makes you really no better than a feminist cackling at men being attacked and hurt. We need to be looking for ways to move beyond this, rather than wallow in meanspiritedness.

another thing that comes to my mind a lot is Van Kleiss. I've already mentioned before that he represents trans-humanism, or perhaps more accurately post-humanism. but the way that the writers and animators get the idea across is so interesting.

his very existence seems to cause the world to go mad.

I made this AMV a couple years ago about good ol' VK, and a lot of it's scenes demonstrate what I'm talking about:

Van Kleiss represents a new age, one in which the human race as we know it has no place or role. the changes he brings about reflect this alien new world.

my comparison is not without basis. the comic series Generator Rex was based off of was called Machinima Rex (or M Rex for short), which was about the world evolving around mankind to the point where it no longer dominant.

honestly the best comparison I can give for his coming is the arrival of an Outer God, specifically Nyarlethotep. I know this sounds like a stretch, but hear me out:

There was a daemoniac alteration in the sequence of the seasons—the autumn heat lingered fearsomely, and everyone felt that the world and perhaps the universe had passed from the control of known gods or forces to that of gods or forces which were unknown. [...] Into the lands of civilisation came Nyarlathotep, swarthy, slender, and sinister, always buying strange instruments of glass and metal and combining them into instruments yet stranger. He spoke much of the sciences—of electricity and psychology—and gave exhibitions of power which sent his spectators away speechless, yet which swelled his fame to exceeding magnitude. this is post-humanism. this is the promise of a world without man; a world populating by things that used to be human but are more, or perhaps less, than human.

St Sabbas Orthodox Monastery has been asked by St Porphyius Orthodox Church in Gaza to fundraise on their behalf.

My name is Archimandrite Pachomy (John Belkoff) and I am the abbot of St. Sabbas Orthodox Monastery in Harper Woods, Michigan. On the evening of October 19 2023, the campus of St. Porphyrius Orthodox Church in Gaza, a community which dates back to the 5th century A.D., was struck by several missiles; 18 civilians were killed, including elderly and children. The church halls were providing shelter to hundreds of both Muslim and Christian civilians. His Eminence, Archbishop Alexios Moschonas of Tiberias lives at St. Porphyrius as the local bishop and is a personal friend of mine. As often as circumstances allow, he calls me and gives updates about how he and the people who make up his flock are struggling to survive. St. Sabbas Monastery is raising money to contribute to the humanitarian welfare of civilians taking shelter at the campus of St. Porphyrius Church. People are in dire need of fuel, power, water, food, and other basic necessities. To that end we are asking for the support of people of good will across the globe. All proceeds will be directed from St. Sabbas to the official Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, to which St. Porphyrius belongs.
