The Legend of Lilith

According to Jewish folklore, Lilith was Adamh’s first wife. Though she is not mentioned in the Torah, over the centuries she has become associated with Adam in order to reconcile contradictory versions of Creation in the book of Genesis.

Lilith and the Biblical Story of Creation

The biblical book of Genesis contains two contradictory accounts of humanity’s creation. The first account is known as the Priestly version and appears in Genesis 1:26-27. Here, God fashions man and woman simultaneously when the text reads: “So God created mankind in the divine image, male and female God created them.”

The second account of Creation is known as the Yahwistic version and is found in Genesis 2. This is the version of Creation that most people are familiar with. God creates Adam, then places him in the Garden of Eden. Not long afterwards, God decides to make a companion for Adam and creates the animals of the land and sky to see if any of them are suitable partners for the man. God brings each animal to Adam, who names it before ultimately deciding that it is not a “suitable helper.” God then causes a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and while the man is sleeping God fashions Eve from his side. When Adam awakes he recognizes Eve as part of himself and accepts her as his companion.

Not surprisingly, the ancient rabbis noticed that two contradictory versions of Creation appear in the book of Genesis (which is called Bereisheet in Hebrew). They solved the discrepancy in two ways:

The first version of Creation actually referred to Adam’s first wife, a 'first Eve.' But Adam was displeased with her, so God replaced her with a 'second Eve' that met Adam's needs.

The Priestly account describes the creation of an androgyne – a creature that was both male and female (Genesis Rabbah 8:1, Leviticus Rabbah 14:1). This creature was then split into a man and a woman in the Yahwistic account.

Although the tradition of two wives – two Eves – appears early on, this interpretation of Creation’s timeline was not associated with the character of Lilith until the medieval period, as we shall see in the next section.

Lilith as Adam’s First Wife

Scholars are not certain where the character of Lilith comes from, though many believe she was inspired by��Sumerian myths about female vampires called “Lillu” or Mesopotamian myths about succubae (female night demons) called “lilin.” Lilith is mentioned four times in the Babylonian Talmud, but it is not until the Alphabet of Ben Sira (c. 800s to 900s) that the character of Lilith is associated with the first version of Creation. In this medieval text, Ben Sira names Lilith as Adam’s first wife and presents a full account of her story.

According to the Alphabet of Ben Sira, Lilith was Adam’s first wife but the couple fought all the time. They didn’t see eye-to-eye on matters of sex because Adam always wanted to be on top while Lilith also wanted a turn in the dominant sexual position. When they could not agree, Lilith decided to leave Adam. She uttered God’s name and flew into the air, leaving Adam alone in the Garden of Eden. God sent three angels after her and commanded them to bring her back to her husband by force if she would not come willingly. But when the angels found her by the Red Sea they were unable to convince her to return and could not force her to obey them. Eventually, a strange deal is struck, wherein Lilith promised not to harm newborn children if they are protected by an amulet with the names of the three angels written on it:

“The three angels caught up with her in the [Red] Sea…They seized her and told her: ‘If you agree to come with us, come, and if not, we shall drown you in the sea.’ She answered: ‘Darlings, I know myself that God created me only to afflict babies with fatal disease when they are eight days old; I shall have permission to harm them from their birth to the eighth day and no longer; when it is a male baby; but when it is a female baby, I shall have permission for twelve days.’ The angels would not leave her alone, until she swore by God’s name that wherever she would see them or their names in an amulet, she would not possess the baby [bearing it]. They then left her immediately. This is [the story of] Lilith who afflicts babies with disease.” (Alphabet of Ben Sira, from "Eve & Adam: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Readings on Genesis and Gender" pg. 204.)

The Alphabet of Ben Sira appears to combine legends of female demons with the idea of the 'first Eve.' What results is a story about Lilith, an assertive wife who rebelled against God and husband, was replaced by another woman, and was demonized in Jewish folklore as a dangerous killer of babies.

Later legends also characterize her as a beautiful woman who seduces men or copulates with them in their sleep (a succubus), then spawns demon children. According to some accounts, Lilith is the Queen of Demons.

Unlike Eve who came from Adam's rib, Lilith emerged from clay along with Adam. Since she was created by God in the same way as Adam, Lilith did not submit to her husband's commands because she thought she was equal to him and did not accept Adam's domination.

Lilith and Adam inhabited the garden of Eden but Lilith's rebellion put her in a situation where she was forced to choose between submitting to her husband or leaving the garden of Eden. Lilith was not willing to give up her independence, therefore she opted to leave Adam and the garden of Eden behind.

The first woman ever created, went into exile and settled near the Red sea. God sent Angels in an attempt to convince Lilith to return back to Eden but she turned her back on God. Without his wife, the misogynistic airhead( Adam) started to feel lonely. God seeing that he was struggling with loneliness decided to create a new woman for him, Eve.

Due to her decision to reject the creator, Lilith was demonised. She was considered a woman shaped demon. In her demonic shape, she would have the power to instigate disease in newborn children. To protect the children from evil, the new born babies were given amulets with the names of angels.

Lilith was jealous of the happy life that Adam and Eve led in Paradise. As an act of revenge, she assumed the shape of serpent and tricked Eve forcing her and Adam to taste the forbidden fruit which caused the couple to be expelled from the Paradise.

The figure of Lilith as an independent and strong woman will go against the patriarchal structure, one of the corner stones of Judeo-Christian culture. For this reason, Lilith was embraced by the feminist movement. She is often regarded as th First feminist. The movement claims that Lilith was unfairly demonised, like most women in our history who have attempted to defy patriarchy whether as a demonic figure or a symbol of women's struggle.

Lilith is an extremely controversial figure within Jewish folklore. Lilith's name is not included in the creation story of the Torah but she appears in several midrashic texts. Her symbolism, history and literature are debated among Jewish scholars, feminists and other intellectuals. There are multiple origin stories for Lilith but the most popular history told views Lilith as the first wife of Adam. According to the "first Eve" story Lilith was created by God from dust and placed to live in the garden with Adam until problems arose between Adam and Lilith when Adam tried to exercise dominance over Lilith. One story tells that Lilith refused to lay beneath Adam during sex. She believed they were created equal, both from the dust of the earth, thus she should not have to lay beneath him. After Adam disagreed, Lilith fled the Garden of Eden to gain her independence. Adam told God that Lilith had left and God sent three angels, Senoi, Sansenoi, and Sammangelof, to retrieve her. The three angels found Lilith in a cave bearing children but Lilith refused to come back to the garden. The angels told her they would kill 100 of her children every day for her disobedience. In revenge, she is said to rob children of life and is responsible for the deaths of still-born infants and crib deaths (SIDS). Male children are at risk of Lilith's wrath for 8 days after birth (until circumcision) and girls are at risk for 20 days. Although Lilith stole children's lives in the night, she agreed not to kill the children who had amulets of either of the three angels.

After the angels' departure, Lilith tried to return to the garden but upon her arrival she discovered that Adam already had another mate, Eve. Out of revenge, Lilith had sex with Adam while he was sleeping and "stole his seed." With his seed she bears 'lilium,' earth-bound demons to replace her children killed by the angels. Lilith is also said to be responsible for males' erotic dreams and night emissions. Another theory says that Lilith is impregnated, thus creating more demons by masturbation and erotic dreams.

The open-ended nature of the Lilith symbol has allowed different groups to use her as a destructive female symbol or a symbol of female power. However, those who still think of her as a demoness could turn it around and once again label feminists as male bashers or men-haters. They see Lilith as wicked and vengeful towards men and children. With any symbol or icon used by feminists, especially within a religious context, there will be controversy and opposition. Whether or not the story of Lilith is accurate is not the main issue. The "first Eve" version of the story gives Lilith a role that many women can identify within Judaism and other religious traditions. She is an independent woman who challenges the oppressive system in which she is placed. Stealing the lives of children represents a certain madness that accompanies her solitude and exclusion. Despite Lilith's downfalls, she still remains a symbol of power simply by her survival and mysteriousness. Miroslava is a mythical sea-dwelling creature, often described as having the head and body of a woman and a fish's tail below the waist. This mer-Woman is a goddess of the Black Sea.

Mermaids (Also mermaidens, mermisses, mermistresses, merqueens, merprincesses, merdaughters, mermothers, mersisters, merwives, merwomen, mergirls, or mergirlfriends) are legendary, aquatic creatures with the head, arms and torso of a human female and the tail of a fish. Male versions are known as "mermen." Their name originates from the word 'mer' meaning 'sea' (In Old English it is more commonly written as mere).

Stories of mermaids have existed for thousands of years and span cultures across the world - from coastal settlements in Ireland to the landlocked Karoo desert in South Africa. The English word mermaid is a compound of "mere" (Old English for sea) and "maid" (a girl or young woman).

Depending on the story or locale, mermaids can be portrayed as either good and helpful, mischievous and playful, or even destructive and territorial. In general, sailors are encouraged to avoid them as much as possible and be cautious should an encounter be made.

Mermaid sightings have been viewed as warnings of forthcoming storms and omens of shipwrecks. And like the sirens of ancient Greek mythology, mermaids were sometimes viewed as predatory creatures who liked dragging people to the water in order to drown them. Some stories, however, speak of mermaids who granted wishes and provided cures to grave illnesses. A few mermaids even marry and live with humans.

....Shedding her old skin, Miroslava took on a form to match her newfound immortality. She also gained wondrous new powers. Having lost her beauty, she had begun to lose sight of her self-worth. With her new powers, she gave herself a new task and a new name: Protector of the Seas. She couldn't quite say if she preferred Miroslava the Beautiful or as Miroslava the Powerful, but she did know that her power was all she had left. She stepped forth to continue her lonely struggle.

What does this SpiritGuide look like?

Your Spirit Guide, this sea goddess, Miroslava, is a playful immortal benevolent mystical mythological being with a shiney, and slippery set of scales down to her floppy finns and she's got webbed claw hands. Her teeth are made for crunching on on sea urchin and coal reef algae so they are pointed and they resemble somewhat that of vampire teeth but much more vicious. You would not guess her jaw is a mouth full of jagged razorblades with the breathtaking beauty she displays on the outer appearance especially her face is very goddess-like. She is like a sea model. Her skin is pasty white and pale and her eyes are dark and haunting as she swims beneath the Black Sea; she vanishes, flipping her teal and sea green tail deeper under the plunder of the darkest cave of the sea and she hides in caverns , waiting for her duty to be called forth from the dolphin or her loyal sea unicorn..

Lies you end up telling yourself because of beliefs thrown upon you mainly by society, meant to keep you in a lower state of mind, full of self-doubts, and attracting all of what you don’t want. You see, our universe is all about energy and duality rules it. It’s about attracting positive or negative energy or situations into our existence, leaving it up to us to decide what we rather experience! Simple as that. That is exactly what my old, outdated self had to realize, in order to achieve the better version of myself that I am emitting today.

Life’s challenges aren’t easy and I’ve been through a lot of them. In reality, I appreciate this fact because it’s taught me to see every life lesson as a growing & learning experience, even when I absolutely have no control over them. I’ve been on this earth for about a quarter of my lifetime now and I’ve had my tough moments. Moments that we all seem to have in common, just in different ways. They have been memorable ones, some more than others, but all of them important.
