Sadly, I haven’t watched much of Joe’s works over the years. What I DO know and can appreciate, is that he was a talented comedian straight out of the Second City, an original member of “SCTV” along with Harold Ramis, and the goofiest “bad guy” ever in the Sesame Street big screen adventure “Follow That Bird.”

Bet he’s performing some comic sketches with Harold and John Candy on another plane of existence somewhere…

RIP, Joe Flaherty. You’re greatly missed.

Joseph Flaherty (June 21, 1941 – April 1, 2024) Actor, writer, and comedian. He is best known for his work on the Canadian sketch comedy SCTV from 1976 to 1984 (on which he also served as a writer), and as Harold Weir on Freaks and Geeks.

 He was one of the original writer/performers on SCTV, where he spent eight years on the show, playing such characters as Big Jim McBob (of Farm Film Report fame), Count Floyd/Floyd Robertson, and station owner/manager Guy Caballero, who goes around in a wheelchair only for respect and undeserved sympathy.

In 1989, Flaherty played a guest role in Married... with Children in the season-four episode "Tooth or Consequences", as a recently divorced dentist who must repair Al Bundy's teeth.

During 1997–1998, Flaherty starred in the television adaptation of Police Academy (Police Academy: The Series) as Cmdt. Stuart Hefilfinger. The series lasted for only one season.

In 1999, Flaherty joined the cast of Freaks and Geeks, an NBC hour-long dramedy set in the 1980–1981 academic year, in which he played Harold Weir, the irascible father of two teens. Despite a dedicated cult following, the show only lasted one season. In the third episode, "Tricks and Treats", he dons a cheap vampire costume reminiscent of his "Count Floyd" character of the depicted era.

Flaherty made appearances on the CBS sitcom The King of Queens as Father McAndrew, the priest at the Heffernans' church. He starred on the Bite TV original program, Uncle Joe's Cartoon Playhouse, and served as a judge on the CBC program The Second City's Next Comedy Legend. (Wikipedia)

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - my takes, thoughts and stuff I kinda got wrong

SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE MOVIE!!!

1) First off: things I definitely got wrong after thoroughly enjoying the teaser trailer…

James Acaster = NOT OSCAR BARRETT. Snarky scientist employed by Mr Zeddemore? Yes, absolutely. Anyone else get a slight Alan Tudyk vibe from his character?

Secret Society? Well, kind of? Not late 1890s but STILL Victorian era. And, why exactly would these “Adventurers” want to release a revenge-bent ancient deity? Because they can? For that matter, did they maybe kidnap Nadeem’s grandmother, or steal the orb from her? There’s so much more to her story (and presumably her family/predecessors in regard to keeping Garraka’s prison safe and hidden) we don’t know about…

On that note, Garakka wasn’t trying to escape the containment unit, he wanted to release all the ghosts within it (that the guys had caught AFTER 1984? after Peck originally turned it off? Gil, more details and context please!)

But I DID get Patton Oswalt’s character right! Li-freaking-brarian! And the whole “under-library?”Totally borrowed from the Video Game (Special Archives level!)

2) Couldn’t help these ideas, they just popped in there…and sort of in order of the movie’s chronology:

-How EXACTLY did Walter “Dickless” Peck go from the EPA to MAYOR OF NYC?!

-Darn that final edit! I liked the bit with “overruled! sustained!” from Paul and Finn.

-Couldn’t Winston have helped fix up the firehouse a LITTLE more over the last, what 2 years? I mean, it’s a business AND a single family home now!

-Also guessing they hauled as much of Egon’s equipment, tech and books as they could from Summerville to Manhattan, right?

-Love Janine being back and as sassy as ever…but mainly throwing in one-liners for the sake of exposition? Which I got a kick out of, don’t get me wrong, but they could’ve gone a little deeper with her character, possibly? Guess I’m still not happy with how much of Annie’s scenes got cut in “Afterlife…”

-Glad Callie’s embraced her Ghostbuster heritage. And look at her piloting that drone trap! Boom!

-OMG Phoebe. I have ALL the feels for her moreso than before. 15, frustrated, feeling isolated…and upping the acerbic sarcasm to 11…then doing something that very well could be read as, maybe more than purely experimental?, at least in my mind (look closely…when she gets into that extractor, her heart rate drops to 42 bpm). And what if something went wrong with the timer?

-And OMG when Melody double crossed her…was I the only one who thought they’d kiss, maybe? Anyone else think of that plot device from the newer DuckTales first season? Just me?

-Or did the orb and wax cylinder give anyone Venture Brothers season 3 vibes?

-Or how the “open rift over the firehouse to the spirit world” idea totally made me think of new Doctor Who, season 1?

-Oh yeah, Kumail is a fire MASTER, and NOT a Fire BENDER!

-One more: NARNIA AND MIDDLE EARTH JOKES!!!

Damn, I need a part 2 after all these pop culture mentions. I’ll pick this up tomorrow.

TWO MORE MONTHS, PEOPLE!!!

Quick thoughts to follow up after my post on the teaser trailer (SPOILER WARNING!) In honor of March the 22nd…I’ll go for 22 observations/opinions.

1. Slimer’s back!

2. JANINE IN UNIFORM! WITH A BLASTER!

-Definitely a call back to 1) one of the ORIGINAL storyboard designs for the backpack/neutrona wand in the first movie, and 2) the IDW comics when Janine and other “new ‘Busters” take over when the OGs disappear.

3. Definitely another secret society/cult that must’ve worshipped Garraka ( hidden room with the demon’s horns/frozen eyepatch guy that shatters in the supposed flashback scene..?)

4. If that’s Coney Island where the big ice storm is coming ashore…then THAT could very well be a throwback to the RGB episode “Collect Call of Cthulu.”

5. GB’s got a new van! Ecto 1c?

6. Research lab? AWESOME!

7. Big question- what’s the connection between the arrival of Garraka and the red light on the containment unit? Is it coming after GBHQ to get more power (much like Gozer?)

8. OK…James Acaster is NOT a grown Oscar…damn. I’m sure his researcher character is gonna be brilliant though. Poor guy…frostburned hand? Eesh.

9. I REALLY hope they explore more of Callie (and therefore, Egon’s) background story. That scene where Trevor’s in that attic…aw.

10. DRONE TRAP!!! Next level! Fans lost their minds with the RTV…someone will surely try to build a model of a freaking FLYING ghost trap.

11. Modified proton packs? Makes sense now, that thing can FREEZE the positron stream! WHAT!?

12. Grooberson’s driving Ecto 1! F*ck yeah, Paul Rudd!

13. LIBRARY GHOST IS BACK!

14. So how does Kumail Nanjiani’s character come into possession of that mysterious golden orb? I’m still thinking it’s his apartment with the secret door.

15. Imagine being an old time NYC firefighter and seeing men frozen to death, in fear. When did NYFD form, I wonder?

16. Patton Oswalt is the new Ray…love it.

17. Bill Murray…still got it, man.

18. Swear to god that’s his old orange jacket from the first movie.

19. OK…on one hand, Gil and Jason are probably not counting the GB Video Game as part of the canon, and yet, the IDW comic universe IS built on some plot points of the game. So…does the PCOC exist in Frozen Empire? Is Peck mayor? Perish the thought?

20. Bring on the mischievous Mini-Pufts! Evidently some survived the “Summerville Massacre.”

21. PLEASE have Egon’s unknown life history be in the story somewhere, PLEASE Gil and Jason! It’s almost 10 years since the world lost Harold Ramis…PLEASE pay his beloved character some more tribute.

22. I have to admit…I do like Annie Potts back with not just her red hair, but those new blue-frame glasses. Good nod to the animated series, I will bow to that piece of fan service, not sorry.

Honestly, you watch a fan video of gameplay, and realize there's STILL unexplored dialogue options..literally months since I last partook of the supreme goodness that is "Return to Monkey Island!"

SPOILERS FOR THE NEW DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL!!!

15 (see what I did there?) observations/comments on “The Church on Ruby Road”

1. Duuuuude Doctor crying in the first scene…omg my heart. He’s gonna be so much more sensitive, more than 11 and 13 combined. I’m very much down with that.

2. Time-riding goblins looking for dinner…bit too fairy tale? I mean sure, lighten the mood a bit after the other 2 specials, I guess. Not the strongest villains in the Whoniverse…still, made me cringe a bit in the right moments

3. LOVE me the Doctor’s sneakers.

4. and He can RUN in them! (I ran track for 6 years in school, and I ref for the sport. I appreciate good running form 😁)

5. Like others have recently said, thank you RTD for keeping on the ‘Timeless Child’ story line.

6. on that…the Doctor more or less bonding with Ruby, one “foundling” to another, will just add all that much more to their relationship, as Doctor and companion, I feel.

7. Bravo to having one of Ruby’s friends/bandmates being trans. Props to that actor.

8. Ncuti in a kilt…clubbing. Booyah.

9. Also bravo to the actresses flipping personalities after the “crack in time” sequence (also also…where have we seen THAT before? hee…)

10. Kinda wishing the sonic was just a little more…screwdriver-ish. But I’m cool with the new design. Hoping the toy version does have that little flashlight included 😋

11. Always love me a Doctor Who episode with a baby. (Father’s Day, Closing Time, Return of Doctor Mysterio…you get the idea.)

12. Anyone else get the slightest “Labyrinth” vibe during THE song? Just me?

13. Kinda weird that I liked Russell’s goblin king much more than the one we got in the first “Hobbit” movie? Yes/no/maybe?

14. Yes I am buying that Mrs. Flood is Iris Wyldthyme or another past companion. Didn’t see that 4th wall break coming…PLEASE let us get a reveal before the new season ends.

15. Ruby’s real mum…or whoever dropped her off on the church step: did no one else see below the cloak? the boots, the short cut of the trousers? Remind anyone of someone, possibly?

WHAT IF IT WAS 13?????

I SWEAR it was her! That could explain the lack of any sort of DNA match! And…Millie has hints of Jodie in her, to me at least…
