MHA 2.24 - Katsuki Bakugo: Origin -part 2
Thank you to everyone who follows, reblogs, likes, and comments! You guys are the best! Now on with the show:
These two sure do have a complicated dynamic. It would have been easy for the story to take the more cliche route of 'poor victim wins over irredeemable bully', but it is taking a risk by showing positive elements mixed in with the difficulty.
You can see the conflicted feeling on Deku's face here. Bakugo has spent this episode being an unrelenting a-hole, but Midoriya persists in admiring him. Deku is an unhinged little sweet bean, isn't he?
Shut up show, you are not allowed to make Bakugo cute (awww, that little angry pout, his itty bitty tears).
Bakugo scrapping with 4 graders and winning is so *Bakugo* of him.
Nooo, it's a cute-off, I can't survive this level of cuteness, help!
Look at him, all sparkly eyed watching Bakugo being a hero and beating up the bad guys with the same fists that Bakugo uses to beat him up. How...inspiring?
They came up with a plan together! They are working as a team! Hallelujah, it's a miracle! Maybe there is hope! Maybe they can wi---
---and they are doomed. All Might has no chill.
Bakugo gave him one of his gauntlets! Why does that feel so major? This exam is great since tey are going to have to learn how to be more um, 'functional', around each other since they are learning to heroes side by side.
On the other hand, I cannot stop thinking about the gauntlet having stored up sweat inside of it. All of that teen sweat just sloshing around in there...ugh.
Dear God, I can only take so many death flags for All Might. You can't talk about how the kids are our future and than cough up blood. My heart can't take it.
All Might, please do not murder the kids.
He just tossed him like a bean bag, the disrespect. Definitely a desperate plan. Maybe if he throws him far enough, Deku might escape being brutally killed by All Might before the exam is over.
Maybe not. Did...did All Might just...break Deku's spine with his booty? Big Buff just brought new meaning to being a hard ass.
Part 3 coming soon!

have you watched any anime’s other than mha?
I have! Mostly early 2000's anime, but I have picked up a handful of newer shows recently too. It was the lockdown that got me back into it with all of the sudden free time.

do you want fic recs for fics that won’t spoil anything based on where you are in the anime?
Yes, I would love that! I am super cautious about dodging spoilers, and have gotten lucky so far. But it has left a fanfic shaped hole in my MHA experience. I am sure MHA's fandom has great fics out there!

MHA 2.24 - Katsuki Bakugo: Origin - part 1
Drumroll please, the match we have all been waiting for is commencing, ba-dum-tish!
Oh honey, no. You should know better than to say the words "avoid combat" to Bakugofckyourself Katsuki.
Let's be real, it would not matter what Deku said, Bakugo would snap at him no matter what. Deku could say "I love PB&J sandwiches." and he would get the exact same reaction.
Oh, Deku has HAD IT. This made me laugh way too hard
Deku: "All I said was, 'I like peanut butter and jelly', why are you yelling?! You would think childhood friends could have a real conversation about our favorite sandwiches, but noooooooo."
Deku's idolization of All Might has always walked the line between inspiring and too much. I love that this episode is bringing up the idea that his hero-worship of All Might is not 100% positive.
All Might, this is not a gift anyone wants. Deku did not put 'broken metal railing sharp enough to make my back a pincushion' on his Christmas list.
OH GOD! All Might you are not supposed to kill the kids!
ALL MIGHT, NO! Bakugo need those organs, holy sh!t. I thought Aizawa was having too much fun fighting the students, but All Might is taking, having a blast beating up these kids, to a higher level.
Bakugo, stop it, you are not allowed to be cute, damnit. It is great that he grew up admiring All Might like Deku, but took away a totally different lesson. He fixated on victory rather than helping people.
Low blow, to call Deku scum while he's down, lol. Deku's ribcage has already been crushed, he doesn't need Bakugo tossing rude names on top of it all.
It's kinda difficult to sound tough when you have a pukey face, but that isn't going to stop Bakugo from trying.
It is wild (and a bit pathetic) that Mr. Obsessed With Winning, will toss his values aside just because Deku is involved. Deku really gets under his skin, huh? I think if Bakugo did not care at all, he would not let Deku bother him so much.
Yeah, Bakugo deserved that punch. But Deku just got puke on his glove, so they both lost really.

I always found it weird how midnight acted around kids, and being in high-school, it just makes me uncomfortable. But everyone loves midnight so I didn't think about it too much so it's very refreshing too see someone else find it weird. Although it works great for my oc! So hey, it works I guess haha
I don't want to start a Midnight hate train, but it is weird and I will point it out. I am glad it works for your OC, that is a good silver-lining! I wish I could watch MHA faster, so I could actually start reading fics. But nooo, I had to go and make a giant long blog about it instead, lol.

She's not actually a predator though? She is not actually attracted to children and never does anything inappropriate with anyone. She is playing into her hero persona (but 'villainous') here, which is literally like playing a character in public. Her hero persona is basically a dommy mommy, and she talks and acts accordingly. Most heroes do that all the time. And your treatment of her power is basically the same thing that was criticized by the story with Shinsou and his Brainwashing. Hers at least only puts people to sleep, unlike his.
Listen, I do not go into shows wanting to hate any character. I am not a hater by nature. I am not here to rain on anyone's parade if they enjoy Midnight. If you like her character, then I am happy for you, but she is not for me. However, I DO have opinions on this ->
Since this can be a sensitive topic I'm putting it under the cut (if you are a big Midnight fan you can skip it).
"She is playing into her hero persona." - And? She is only 'playing pretend' at sexual harassment, so that makes it fine somehow? This reminds me of people who use the "it's just a joke" excuse. Play pretend or not, the result is still bad.
"Most heroes do that all the time" - Most heroes persona's are not sexual role-playing publically at a high school. It is not equivalent.
"She is not actually attracted to children and never does anything inappropriate with anyone." - It doesn't matter if she 'actually' is, pretending that she is, is also wrong. There are many examples of her saying the students "turn her on". Let me repost this image of Midnight placing an UNCONSCIOUS student on her lap:
'Your treatment of her power is the same as the villainizing of Shinso's quirk." - NO. Her quirk sedates people, it does NOT force her to put those people in sexualized positions while they are asleep. That is a CHOICE she is making regardless of her quirk. Shinso is not out here using brainwashing to get girls to lay on his lap. If he did the audience would label him a monster, so why should Midnight get a pass?
Let's see, what Mineta, of all people has to say about Midnight:
The subs outright uses the terminology or "predator" and "prey". The show knows exactly what it is doing. It is playing with risque humor, which for me, does not work. Maybe this humor works for some people, but I personally find it outdated at best and harmful at worst.
Still, since Midnight is a joke character, I am able to not take it too seriously and still enjoy the show. BUT I am not going to just ignore it either. I think keeping a critical eye on the media you enjoy is important, so you do not end up with junk in your brain.
In the end it's just disappointing, because Midnight could have been MHA's Jigglypuff, but noooooo.

PLEASE think about the leg holes for one last time because my immediate thought upon seeing that other ask was Iida's engines with tiny little shower caps over the ends
I almost choked laughing at this, so thanks, I guess. Thing is, that is exactly what Iida would do. It got me thinking, where would Iida find teeny tiny shower caps? So I googled mini shower caps to glorious results:
(these are made by creativewordhd on Youtube)
IMAGINE Iida buying tons of little shower caps made for dolls to cover his engines. This is now my official headcanon forever.

since you're on the topic, thought you'd want to see this post of the horikoshi quote! he does, in fact, call bakugou 'stoic', which is hilarious: https://www.tumblr.com/yugiohz/747768125103144960/sensitive-soul-exactlyyyyyyyy?source=share
Is this written directly by Horikoshi? I am getting some mixed info on that, and I am scared to Google anything MHA, because I am spoiler shy. Regardless, this is a GOLD MINE.
This puts the use of the word stoic in context. It isn't "Bakugo is stoic.", as a clear-cut statement, no, it's "Bakugo is.........stoic???". I am curious what the Japanese vocab is, since this is a translation choice as well. But the real gold in this one is, "he's actually a sensitive soul.".

I imagine they have a natural sealing functikn when submerged and maybe he can kinda use his engines to evaporare the water that sticks to the inside after?
We can only hope this is the case considering the alternatives are a horror movie. I REFUSE to think about Iida's leg holes any further. No more leg holes. I will throw myself into the ocean if I have to think about the leg holes again.

Whoops, just went to check from which volume extra the quote I was thinking about was from, and turns out that it was from a spin-off manga by a different author. Well... technically they are not wrong anyway, but ah, a disappointment.
Thanks for checking! It is still a worthwhile insight into the character, for sure. I have noticed that people can be a bit touchy about Bakugo as a character, so I love hearing about opinions on him. Honestly, I only grew to like him recently after I watched the Uraraka fight. I thought he was funny before, but now I appreciate him.

I try never to think about the quirks in depth because then my brain just gets stuck on how Iida gets in water when he has open holes to the inside of his legs
OH MY GOD, WHY WOULD YOU PLANT THIS IMAGERY IN MY BRAIN?! What have I done to deserve being cursed by anon like this?
Does the water sploosh around in his leg holes?!! Is there FLESH in there? HOW DOES HE DRY THEM?! Does he have to stick a hand towel in there and twirl it around? Will it get MOLDY or RUSTY if he doesn't dry them?! NOOO!
How dare you. I am going to be haunted by this when I close my eyes to sleep at night. Why would you push my imagination off this nasty ass cliff?

Bakugou being pissy due to nitroglycerin is just a headcanon that was never confirmed in canon and that exists only to explain/justify his behaviour. The supplemental material, on the other hand, sorta confirmed that Bakugou's behavior is a defense mechanism and is entirely just him trying to look stoic and isolate himself. He's fully aware of how he makes other people feel.
Yeah, I figured it was a headcanon. I think it is a pretty good one! It makes sense with what we know about quirks, and I love it when fans put so much thought and care into how they interpret the characters.
I suppose Bakugo fans might use it to justify how he acts. Personally, I wouldn't since robbing Bakugo of his flaws and harsher edges would make him less interesting. I like it when characters are complicated.
Is the supplemental material written by Horikoshi? To be honest, I am only here for the main story. I have never been the type to seek out the extra stuff. Bakugo is smart, so it would not surprise me if he is self-aware about his temperament pushing people away from him. However, "stoic", is not a word I would use to describe him, haha.
Is "stoic" Bakugo in the room with us right now?

There’s also the fact that Midnight could have possibly killed Bakugo during the sports festival. See, due to the nature of nitroglycerin as a muscle relaxant, many people in the fandom believe that Bakugo’s body produces high amounts of adrenaline to keep his blood pressure at normal levels and that’s why he’s so pissy all the time. So, by having Midnight knocking him out with her quirk, the adrenaline is no longer being produced and his blood pressure drops down to the point where his heart ends up stopping. Just something I wanted to get off my chest when I saw your Midnight hate in the most recent post
I guarantee Horikoshi did not think about the nitty gritty details of how a sedative could impact Bakugo's quirk. Not to that extent. This is why I love fandoms. There are always fans who think of angles and consequences that the author never considered. It's fun!
I love the idea of Bakugo's quirk having unexplored chemical effects on him. Quirks are still pretty mysterious to me, but they can change someone to the point of giving them a bird head, so the Bakugo adrenaline idea is in the realm of possibility for the story for sure. Thanks for sharing the cool headcanon with me!

MHA 2.23 - Stripping the Varnish - part 2
I have gotten a nice wave of new followers lately, so thank you, and welcome to the madness!
If you showed me this scene when I hadn't watched any MHA and you told me this multi-armed bro in a blue circus costume was a student, and the cowboy pointing a gun at his head was a teacher conducting a school exam I would have laughed so freaking hard.
BAM, underestimate Invisible Girl and get wrecked! This was the easiest fight for the kids to win, because what was Snipe going to do, shoot them for real?
The damage control, haha. I know the potential lawsuit is flashing before Snipe's eyes as he speaks. This Invisible Girl gag is an example of how to do this kind of humor in a harmless and actually funny way. Not all sexual humor is bad, but we are about to be drowned in the worst of it in 3...2...1...
I somehow forgot that Midnights quirk was the roofie quirk. Must have blacked out and banished it from my memory.
You know what, I do not even mind this as a character motivation for him. Lots of teens are motivated in a similar way. It could even be developed in interesting ways for the story. Who knows?
I see a lot of Mineta hate, but Midnight is drastically worse to me. She is the worst MHA character by far. There is no point to her except being a predator working at a school.
It is ok to have a sexually driven character. It only becomes a problem when it crosses into harassment/predation, and is framed as 'just a joke'. This always drags down the quality of otherwise good anime.
Sometimes it is good to remember that all of the 1A kids almost died in season 1. They have all been THROUGH it. That kind of struggle would push anyone to evolve, maybe even a kid like MIneta.
Mineta has been looking for outside validation for his self-worth via girls and popularity. But it isn't working, because being a hero on the outside is not enough when you have the personality of a soggy noodle.
Gotta admit, Mineta looking up to Deku as an inspiration is cute. Deku IS cool. Better recognize. It is unexpected and welcome to see Mineta make a revelation like this. 'Coolness comes from within'. Will this lead to any real change for Mineta? I doubt it, but we will see.
...aaand I still hate him. I feel bad for Sero, once again, not getting a chance to shine. He was done dirty at the Tournament too. Justice for Sero!

MHA 2.23 - Stripping the Varnish - part 1
First watch, no spoilers! Tell me if you want to be added to a taglist.
Aoyama: 'We are in the middle of an exam, hanging on for dear life, and getting sucked into a black hole. ...So, are you thinking about your crush on our resident broccoli babe?' You know what, he delivered optimum drama and I respect it.
They passed! At first I thought this was the worst timing to bring up Uraraka's crush, but it was actually the best time. I don't know if Aoyama is smarter than I realized, or if it is coincidental that his gossip girl tendencies paid off for them.
Out of context, this screenshot is absurd af. 'mELtINg tHe pRiNcIpAL bAd, hAhA.' You know, deep down, they would not be that sad if the principal had a melt-death, lol. Just look at those cheeky little smiles.
What kind of Rocket Raccoon backstory? Who was experimenting on him and why? Why would someone want to make a hyper intelligent little bear? What if he is secretly a villain? Maybe letting Mina melt him isn't a bad idea after all. My head is spinning.
What are these nutso background facts about the UA staff? He hosts a radio show from 1AM-5AM - WHEN DOES HE SLEEP? Is his high-energy pure caffeine? Aizawa should be bringing Mic a matching sleeping bag to work everyday.
Not to mention the little trivia that he made everyone's ears bleed the second he was born. Honestly, iconic of him.
If someone told me I had to communicate with bugs, I would cut them out of my life forever. Koda's meltdown is so justified.
And the cutest moment of the episode award goes to -
I wonder what Koda and his family's character design is based on? It is very unique.
He speaks! Jirou really carried this exam and used both of their quirks in such a smart way. I love these kinds of episodes where I get to see the side-characters shine.
OH FFFFFFFFFFU---------------------NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
They killed him. RIP Present Mic, killed by centipedes and two high schoolers. May his soul ascend to DJ heaven. The world will be a quieter place without him. Bless.

MHA 2.22 - Yaoyorozu: Rising - part 2
I want a Todoroki pinata for my birthday party.
She really has a high opinion of Todoroki, doesn't she? That's sweet and all, but Momo, you are one of the smartest kids in your class, you got this!
HE VOTED FOR HER! SHUT UP! THAT IS SO STINKING CUTE! It is like a literal 'vote' of confidence.
I have no reason for putting this screenshot up other than the fact that looking at it makes me tingle.
Speaking of tingles. Is Momo BLUSHING? Do I sense a crush in the air? If she doesn't think of a good plan quick, Todoroki is going to get strung up like a pinata again.
She missed the switch! Girl, you have GOT to work on your hand-eye coordination. Pulling a catapult and a whole pile of metal out of her booba is a unique talent. Paired with her brains (if not her spatial awareness) her potential sky high.
Look! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Superman? No. It's a hot burrito flying in the sky! I love this funky shape changing metal. It looks kinda snug, but being encased in hot metal is a nightmare actually.
Why does it look like Aizawa is taking a power nap? He would though. OR is he looking down so that Momo cannot see his face as he LIES like a lying liar.
"Do you feel sick?" - Hahahaha! Sometimes I think Todoroki is a low-key unintentional comedy king.
Momo can't handle any blows to her confidence right now. Aizawa knows that, so he is letting her small mistake slide. It isn't truthful, but it is what she needs to hear to support her growth right now.
Oh my god, Todoroki you absolute donut. Who sees someone cry and thinks, I know what will fix this, pressure points! So practical and yet so clueless.
Granny is onto you Aizawa. He looked so excited to beat up his students, but when it comes down to it he is a sweetie.
I have gotten a tag request, @jessiedead If anyone else wants to be tagged I can start a little taglist. Let me know!

MHA 2.22 - Yaoyorozu: Rising - part 1
Happy Easter! Today we celebrate Easter with the rise of Momo!
Froggie makes the bird man go WHOOOOOSH!
It upsets me that the bird king doesn't know how to fly. Sucks.
That's right. Put respect on Tsu's name. She doesn't get phased.
It is good to have focus on how calm and collected Tsu is under pressure in the same episode where we see Momo wavering under the weight of her insecurities. It contrasts the characters.
Girl up-chucked for victory. I am torn between 'yuck' and 'cool use of frog facts'.
I just want to pat Dark Shadow on the head and say, 'good puppy'.
Meanwhile, these two goobers are goobering. Is it weird that I am jealous of the Karate Kid here? I want Iida to give me a piggyback ride.
Momo is STILL hung up on her tournie loss. I feel like there were characters that had far more embarrassing fights, but they did not have their self-esteem evaporate like Momo's.
Kaminari vs. Leaf Pokemon was worse, Sero vs. Todoroki was worse, and Aoyama vs. Ashido ended with someone in their underpants. None of them are letting it hold them down to this extent.
Why did the Spiderman theme just start playing?
Those are some strong electrical wires. Ninja Sensei is risking electrocution just to get the drop on his students, lol.
CALTROPS? I don't know what is funnier, how hardcore Aizawa is going, or Todoroki's 'are you serious?' reaction.
Bless his heart, he looks so confused.
I love Aizawa's teaching style. Toss ninja traps at a student, and then dish out the most helpful critique after. 5/5 on Rate My Professors.
Todoroki took charge when Momo was being indecisive, and didn't really formulate a real plan with her. Momo was letting Todoroki steamroll ahead and not speaking up because of her insecurity.
No Momo, just leave him bobbing in the air like a goddamn Christmas ornament.
I do not want to hurt the feelings of Momo fans. I am not a hater, but I have to be honest that Momo annoyed me in this episode. Girl, get it together.
