So, according to the French wikipedia page of Santiano, the song we know today is a French adaptation of the British sea shanty Santianna, giving it a more upbeat and faster rhythm than its original counterpart. So the contemporary English version is actually English speakers doing a cover of our cover of their song. Sounds like some La Marseillaise kinda shit

Regarding Santianna itself, the original sea shanty has themes dating back to at least the 1850s! >=D
