Not to play the Elder Royal Watcher card but you have to ration out your outrage or this place will eat you alive. All that's happened is some of you have realised...the monarchy isn't equal? What an absolute shocker. This doesn't negatively impact anyone at all so just chill out and have a nap. Someone else will do something controversial next week, move on.

I don't think that some people understand that contributions to art don't have to always be in the form of singing, dancing, acting and painting (and then going on to use those amazing talents to earn money). You can be a contributor by being loud and proud about your love of art which Kate has always been, having an informal artistic portfolio (we have seen Kate's drawings, paintings, photographs and musical abilities) and being the Patron and supporter of several art initiatives and organisations and being at the heart of raising money and their profiles. Especially after Hold Still and the success of that.
Arguments can be made about the fact that Kate hasn't been a contributor in the most mainstream sense but to pretend like it's surprising that she would get it is a sign of ignorance, possible misogyny (especially when the person doesn't seem to have a problem with William's honour) and a bit of delusion (because, hello she's RoYaL) or a combination of all of these.
I also detect a bit of annoyance towards her when it should really be towards Charles. He gave it to her, did he not? I highly doubt she sought it especially given what she's currently dealing with and for almost every other order, there has been a royal who has been the first to receive it. Why is it suddenly a problem because the first is Kate in this scenario?
As always, I love the way you answer questions and hope you never change.
So I think if Kate was an ordinary person she wouldn't have got this. That doesn't mean she's done nothing of value. It just means that if you take the most recent inductee Shirley Bassey as an example she has had an over 70 year career in the arts, is one of the best selling female musicians the UK has ever produced, and already had a Damehood for her contribution to the arts. So if Catherine Middleton was just a normal rich lady who had done all the same things for the art world she wouldn't qualify yet. She could certainly have got an MBE or something like that, but not an honour at this level.
However, she isn't just Catherine Middleton. That was my point really: it's not something she got entirely on merit, sure, but she's the latest in a line of thousands of royals over the centuries who have got honours and positions that they wouldn't have got if they were ordinary people. The argument the original anon made was specifically that Kate hadn't done enough to earn it and my response was none of the royals have earned most of their honours because that's not how honours for royals work. So that second anon's argument - nepotism's ok as long as you're not the first generation to benefit - makes no sense to me. Either they earned it or they didn't, and that's either a problem or it's not. And that is an excellent point that Charles is the one to hold responsible, not Kate. She didn't keep him chained in the basement until she got an honour most people didn't even know existed lol.
Thank you very much. That's so sweet of you :)

Kate is the first royal appointed, though.
I’m pretty sure “it’s ok he got it because his daddy had it” is the exact opposite of meritocracy, anon.

This isn't at all shitting on Kate but per the website ("major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government lasting over a long period of time"), what are her major contributions to any of those fields and what period of time are we talking about? She's done good work but I honestly think it's a stretch to call anything major or over a long period of time
While I don't disagree with the point, if you're upset about royals getting positions they haven't earned then oh boy you're going to find following royals very hard lol.
That's how honours work. What did William contribute to the military or the civil service that was enough for you not to mention him being Great Master of the Order of the Bath? What have Sofia and Carl Philip contributed to Finnish society that is enough to justify them having the Finnish Order of the White Rose they wore yesterday? Royals don't get Honours or Orders through merit, necessarily. They get them for diplomatic reasons or because they are acting as a "sponsor" of the Order, as a representative of the person who issues them all.

i've heard about the insulated roof story but then i google and found this "When my daughter was three weeks old he told me she resembled the carving of St Guthlac in the church. Later that day, he asked the cleaning ladies which polish they used."
brb. i'm going to cry in the corner.
Both sound incredibly accurate and just further demonstrate why he is objectively the best royal.

Very interested in the pussy crisis in Britain tbh.
Same. I didn't look inside and as Grace pointed out when I told her, it's probably not a good idea to google British pussy crisis lol. But I'm intrigued.

Just to correct some misunderstandings I’ve seen. The last three monarchs in Luxembourg all abdicated, it’s a tradition much like it is in the Netherlands, and given Henri has reigned for around the same length of time his father and grandmother reigned and has had a lot of controversies in recent years I think it was expected that plans were happening in the background and they’d thought about when it would happen. But they also planned the Queen’s funeral for 60 years before it happened. So Henri saying he plans to abdicate and knows when is really just reiterating something we already knew. He absolutely could announce a date tomorrow but it could also be a decade from now so this isn’t Margrethe 2.0 just yet! Hold off before you start spiralling.
You can hear more about abdications in our podcast episode about it.

“His Majesty The King (King Harald) is back at work today, Monday 22 April. In connection with the King resuming his work, some changes will be made to his programme going forward.
From the time the King is back at work today, he will resume his constitutional duties as head of state, conducting meetings and audiences at the Palace, as well as official visits around Norway.
However, the king will make adjustments to his programme in the future, due to his age. This will entail a permanent reduction in the number and scope of activities in which the King participates. Practical arrangements will also be made in the implementation of his official activities. His Majesty The King is happy to be back and resume his work.”
- An update on King Harald’s activities in light of his recent health issues

Every time I see a royal statue unveiled it never looks anything like them and it's so boring. Plus lots of people will hate it on moral grounds and the supposed "public learning opportunity" defence is rubbish because hardly anyone stops and looks at a random statue in their day to day life. My solution which should please everyone is that statues can be put up but the plans have to be approved by a panel of 8 year olds. Imagine a statue of Queen Victoria but she's a fire breathing half human half dragon creature. Bet you'd read the plaque for that.

It's probably the first royal wedding I'm watching where a commentary would be useful 🤣 the order is strange. Seems like Jill Biden is the highest ranking person, the guards just greeted persons arriving at the beginning but no kings . And just a handful of people I recognized. Nobody brought a bodyguard.
Found some old posts in my inbox. This was about the Jordanian royal wedding lol. Jill Biden honestly could be the person they care about the most, they have a very important relationship with the US. I don't remember any of the rest of this but the bodyguards don't generally stick next to them at events like this. The whole event is covered by its own security so their protection officers will have been nearby but not walking around with them. Think of any royal wedding or State Banquet or any church events or whatever. You never notice any security there.
