Hostels  - yay or nay?
During my time in Chile in 2017, I exclusively stayed in Hostels. I had great experiences, including 2 of which had private terraces. I enjoyed looking out at the Pacific ocean in La Serena and the other in San Pedro de Atacama I enjoyed the terrace watching the milky way. I will definitely be using them in Europe in the fall. What have been your experiences? Have you stayed Iin  hostels? Was it a…

The Art of Connection
Welcome to my new page – Vagabond Ventures. This blog is strictly about travel – writing, travel plans, photography and sharing our favourite places to travel to. It’s a place to connect with other like-minded travelers – solo, women, men, couples, luxury travel, budget travel – this is a place to discuss all ways to travel. Bus, train, cruise – whatever comes to our mind we will discuss openly…

Be grateful for everything
After watching the Super Bowl and seeing multi-millionaires (and billionaires?) playing and watching a football game, it got me thinking – are they happy? I mean – really happy? Does playing football make them happy or is it just for the money? And the famous people there – again, are they really happy because of what they do or what they possess? Deep thoughts for watching an annual game,…

You're never too old to learn something new
I am in the middle of a three week course and while skeptical at first, I have really been impressed by the amount of new ideas I am learning. One is about AI technology – it’s something I’ve obviously heard about and have been a bit scared to learn. But it is truly fascinating and will definitely be something we will all need to learn in the future. I have also learned that I have much more…

Here's to a happy and healthy 2024!
2023, for me, was probably one of the worst years in my life. From the stress caused by my son, to not working at all – and many things in between, I’m very happy that 2023 is done! I did manage to accomplish something – my published book – and I was lucky to spend the majority of my time with my grandson. While this also caused stress (I am almost 59 and far too old to be taking care of a 3…

A published author!
I didn’t realize it’s been almost a month since I blogged. It’s been a stressful month, actually it’s been a stressful year if I am going to be honest. The fallout of a relationship with my son, my never ending financial worries and recently a health scare with my daughter has chalked this up as an eventful year, but not the way I like it to be. BUT – good things do come out of stressful times,…

Thrifty at Fifty
Seven years ago, I began a project that I never thought would take this long to complete. At times, I didn’t even want to finish it. It became a stressful endeavour and one I wasn’t sure I even wanted to finish. It was during the winter break in China that I started this project. I had lots of time off, so it just seemed to be the right time. I wasn’t exactly sure how it would progress, but I…

An improved mood.
My time lately has been involved in completing a six year project. It’s about two weeks away from being completed and I am SO excited! Finally, my book about traveling with no credit is almost ready to publish. I’ve been devoting most of my spare time doing the final editing, formatting and creating a book cover. During a pretty crappy year with so many ups and downs, I can actually say that…

A scar is never ugly...
I have literally just finished reading Little Bee by Chris Cleeve. What an eye-opening book about so much strife in this world, it makes the problems of my own seem so small. It was not an easy read – some very difficult scenes to work through – but I could not put it down. “On the girl’s brown legs there were many small white scars. I was thinking, Do those scars cover the whole of you, like…

What would you do...
If you were told you had to move immediately? Where would you go? If you were given an opportunity of a lifetime to work your dream job anywhere in the world but would have no ability to keep in touch with family or friends except for mailing letters? Would you take the job? If you were given the opportunity to have any wish granted? What would you wish for? If you could go back in time to…

Airport therapy
Airports – the past few years they haven’t been a place that most people like to go to due to all the travel issues. But things are easing up and some people are anxious to get to an airport, board a plane and fly off to fun places! Well, this past week, I had a day to myself, had gone to one of my favourite places but it just didn’t feel like the best place for me that day. I went back to the…

A journal and a pen
Sometimes all you need is quiet, your journal and a pen. I found myself sitting quietly this morning, some unexpected time to myself, and decided to get out my journal and write. After 4 and a half pages of writing, my mind felt clearer than it had in a long time. I wrote about frustrations, former friends, and future plans. It allowed me to awake my mind to writing again. I came up with a…

Thought for today
While this month has been a bit rough, I know things will, and are, get better. I just need to be patient and let everything come together. And have faith in myself.

What happened then?
I was taking the bus today, and sometimes, when I’m alone on the bus, my mind comes up with different thoughts. Sometimes odd ones! Like today’s thought. I was thinking, I’m 58 years old. I was born in 1965. What was happening in the world 58 years before I was born? That would be 1907. What famous people were born in 1907? Well, Gene Autry, Katherine Hepburn, John Wayne, Laurence Olivier,…
