I never read it this way before but oof the way Ichigo immediately translates Rukia’s “this Hollow was probably drawn here by your reiatsu” into self-blame/failure of responsibility on this part–and THEN the reason Rukia ends up getting sideswiped by the Hollow is because she turns back to Ichigo to tell him that’s not the case, that’s not the way she meant it, because it’s that important that he knows that. ToT That’s them, that’s the story

i always interpreted ulquiorra’s heart speech as “ahh.... so living and dying for your friends is the heart” instead of the shipper goggles. i think by the time the nakama stormed hueco mundo, he was starting to understand that the desire to love and protect were part of something bigger with regards to the human condition, and to witness orihime break out of her fear and self-loathing and put her faith into her friends (six hearts beating as one) was probably the trigger for his unbelievable cruelty towards the rescuers. to kill ichigo in front of orihime was meant to be a lesson for her, but to see him resurrect was probably the moment he realized that the heart wasn’t a physical thing but an emotional bond between people who loved and cared about each other deeply.

orihime was the nexus that pulled the rest of the hearts into action so that they could rescue her, while ulquiorra had her right in the palm of his hands and didn’t understand her significance until the very end when ichigo refused to beat down an already dying man. a reflective moment in bleach since i remember orihime getting so much hate during that time despite being traumatized, abused, and shellshocked. I think it was important that the closing notes of the lust arc made it clear that ulquiorra’s great miscalculation wasn’t thinking that he could break her (because in a way, he did). his biggest miscalculation was thinking she wouldn’t bounce back long enough to put her faith in the love that connects her to the rest of the nakama. I truly believe rescuing orihime wasn’t just reinforcing the nakama’s bonds, it was recognizing that what binds us together isn’t just pain and loss, but the longing for home and the bonds we hold dearest, which ultimately equate to the heart.
