a puddle of glass licks wounds into dogs' paws by the parking lot. this is mostly because it gets dark early and even the kindly people are wearing shoes and don't know. the dogs don't really know either. dogs gets put on leashes and walked; it is simply what dogs do. and the shards are very small, and they don't hurt terribly much unless you walk on them. here, between streetlights, every direction asks to be a sunrise. and there is something good-smelling piled by the side of the road. it will make you sick, when you comb your rough tongue over it. your palms will ache. you will know every sagging place your body can't bear itself anymore. the puddle of glass, dripping in the dark, will come with you, asking you to believe it's a sunrise.
