magic with matchsticks

a small discussion about matchsticks in my witchcraft/magic discord server inspired me to make this post, and note the different ways you can use matchsticks in magic/witchcraft!

used (or new) matches can be used in divination, similar to bonethrowing

used (or new) matches can be used to determine if you're cursed by throwing 2 matchsticks into a cup or bowl of water

use match remnants/ashes to make black salt

use matches to represent fire in deity workings, spells, elemental magic, on your altar, etc

matches can be used to speed up spells/spellwork by "lighting a fire under" someone/something

use matches for simple intention spells

light a match and use its smoke for cleansing or banishing

⏳ Restarting Spell ⏳

a ritual for fresh starts, to remove old energies, and invite new ones in

⏳  to be done at the end of the year, midnights, or the end of each month

⏳  gather: a white candle, salt, two pages, and a fire-safe surface

⏳  write about, or in a sigil, represent the aspects you want to shake off

⏳  on the second page, write the things you wish to usher in.

⏳  place the positive one under the candle, and draw a circle of salt around the candle. burn the negative note.

⏳  if you plan to repeat the ritual, use the back of the positive note to collect the negativities for when you burn it later.

⏳  to do in a group ritual, arrange the candles in a circle or mark all pages with a unifying sigil

— casual ways to connect with deities

pray to them

straight up just talk to them, tell them about your day

offer some of your meal to them (or alternatively, the steam from your meal)

cook with them and/or for them

pick a movie to watch with them, especially if it connects to things they rule over (i.e. a romcom with hera or aphrodite, a documentary about the sea for poseidon, etc)

give them the first sip of your morning drink, or even make a cup for them

assign them a stuffed animal and take care of it as a devotion to them (bonus points if that animal is sacred to them or if you associate it with them)

say good morning/good night

thank them for the things you see (i.e. thanking apollo when you see a pretty sunrise/sunset, thank hypnos for a good night’s sleep, etc)

blow kisses to them

one of the most important things in your craft is actually going outside and properly getting to know your area. what plants grow there? what is the wildlife like? what animals are common in your area? are there any nature spots that are good for outside magick or meditation?

research in form of books or the internet isn’t always enough. knowing your area is incredibly important in order to reconnect with earth especially, and to your craft.

worshipping imperfect gods

Maybe this is a flawed bit of theology, but I think part of the reason why I love the greek pantheon is *because* they are imperfect. Because they are gods of bad things as well as of good things. Because I am a person with bad traits as well as good traits.

If Aphrodite was the goddess of love and love alone, where would She be when jealousy takes my heart? Where would she be on nights when I feel lost, or unloved? When I feel any emotion but pure, warm love unmitigated by the reality of life’s difficulties? What relatability, what understanding could there be in the worship, in the love of such a god?

Rather, it is because of Her imperfections that She is worthy of my devotion. Aphrodite has been a goddess for thousands of years, not just of warm and fuzzy love, but of jealousy, of obsession, of envy, of vanity, of heartbreak, of loss, of crushes mild and devastating. Love is Her greatest and most central aspect and quality, of course, but She is so much more. She has seen so much more, and does so not with scorn or condemnation, but with understanding.

When I am hurting, when I am at my lowest, when I am stricken with obsessive thoughts or jealousy or mistrust, I do not want for a perfect god to spurn and reprimand me. I reprimand myself well enough, and look what little good it does me. Rather, I find it far easier to move forward and grow when the goddess I look to is one who understands these emotions - She wants me to grow, She wants me to move past them, but She understands. Because She has been there, and She has watched over hundreds of generations of people feeling the same emotions, and She has loved them, accepted them, helped them move on, just the same.

Because Aphrodite is, Herself, a selfish and vain and jealous and obsessed goddess at times, it makes it easier to accept that these emotions are a part of existence. They come, and they pass. When they come, I pray to Her to help relieve me of them. When they are nonpresent, I praise Her for helping me overcome, and ask that when they return again, She help me maintain sympathy and love for myself.

Another Reminder

This is one that has been addressed a few times recently by others.

Not everything that happens is a sign or means something. Sometimes a dog is just a dog, not a messenger  Or a crystal breaking is just an accident and not a sign it is “all used up.”

Things that can be done to analyze a “sign”:

Look at circumstances around the “sign”- Is it unusual? Does it seem to have a mundane cause?

Set a threshold limit- “If I see ‘sign’ 13 times today, it means something” or “If ‘sign’ occurs 7 times today, it means something.” Make it known. And still- is it unusual? You may hear a new song on the radio 20 times in one day, that is not unusual. Hearing an older song on 3 different stations at the same time might be a sign, it could also just be coincidence.

Look for confirmation using divination. Perform for yourself and ask others to as well, but make sure you let them know you have or are asking others and that you have or will be doing the same reading yourself.

Do some research if you can’t answer causes for yourself. If you see 20 of a bird that you don’t usually see, check to see if they are migrating.

Basically, if something happens and you are not sure if it is a “sign” double check and analyze the event because it may just be what it is and nothing more.

Edit: Because it was brought to my attention and it wasn’t my intention to belittle experiences and I am sorry if anyone felt that way. Just because something is not a “sign” doesn’t mean that it isn’t important and just because something is a “sign” doesn’t mean that it must be important. The level of importance of events are personal.

The darker seasons are upon us, so here are some reminders for my fellow witches:

-society forgets that this is supposed to be a time of rest, make sure that you don’t! Take extra time for rest and sleep.

Here are some Very Good Reasons to take walks in fall and winter:

- take walks in nature to remind yourself of the natural cycles and connect with nature.

-take walks for some of that fresh, cold air. It will cleanse you from your troubles and calm your mind. Try to not listen to music and instead listen to the silence.

- walks are also great to talk to your gods, guides and/or ancestors. Give thanks to them and to nature itself.

- prepare your body and immune system for the winter and gradually get used to the cold by spending time outside.

- the air in a forest or a park is a lot cleaner than that in most public spaces, especially with the germs flying around right now.

- avoid the public transport system by walking whenever its possible for you!

- also, appreciate all of these beautiful colors autumn has to offer! There are a lot of energies to be found in them:

- the birds leave the cold weather and fly towards a climate thats more suited for their needs. Do the same and reevaluate whom and what you give your energies to, and who you share your space with. Leave unhealthy situations behind whenever possible.

-sew or draw sigils in your jackets, scarfs and hats to keep you warm and dry

- the bright lights, songs and consumerism of christmas aren’t natural and can be very draining. Don’t beat yourself up for not being as productive as usual. Few plants grow and bloom during winter.

- ward yourself before visiting christmas markets (or any supermarket, let’s be honest). I like to spray my scarfs with protective sprays, and this can be done with any piece of clothing. But make sure to always let them fully dry, folks!

- I cannot stress this enough, never underestimate self care and rest at this time of year. Remind yourself that nature itself survives winter by going to sleep. Never feel bad for resting.

- evergreens in the home will help you to stay healthy, positive and in touch with nature. It’s great and easy color magic and perfect for closet witches.

- I smoke cleanse most gifts I get. I do nkt need anyones negative energies hafting on things I might put up in my bedroom.

- catch every ray of sunshine you can get, you will need it. If you are prone to seasonal depression, consult with a doctor. For me personally, supplements have helped a great deal :)

-clean your personal space. Your bed, your room, your house. Fall and winter are important times to look within, make sure you have a welcoming space to do somthe state of our home often influences the state of our mind.

- ginger and cinnamon (and often lemon) can be added to most hot drinks and will give you some extra warmth and energy even on the coldest days.

- hot water plus ginger in the morning, with honey in the afternoon and instead with chilies in the evening will do wonders for your immune system!

- if you buy crystals on the christmas market make sure you get what you pay for.

- when you spend time with old friends and family during the festivities, communicate your (new) boundaries clearly and calmly, and do not force yourself to spend time with those who cannot respect them. Your wellness is the most important thing and you should treat it accordingly! Sigils and spells to improve your patience and clear communication can help here.

- if you must spend time around toxic people, cleanse yourself afterwards and remind yourself that people act and speak only for and against themselves and never against you!
