Hello! My name is Tarn and I’m obsessed with modern temples, modern witchcraft and many other modern things. Which probably seems odd for a traditional witch? 🤔 3 more 'modern' facts about me you probably didn’t know: 1. Even though I class myself as a Traditional witch, I will use some modern forms of magic. Traditional witches use folk magic- and folk magic makes use of whatever is available. In this day and age, that also includes photography, the internet and so on. I use these things more as tools- so it's not as if my entire path has been turned upside down. 2. Even though I love old temples and traditional shrines, I also love seeing modern temples and shrines. The creativity sings of devotion! I love to see all of these forms of devotion- I just find it astoundingly beautiful. As long as there's hard work and love put in- it always turns out to be powerful! 3. Even though I sometimes crave the way the witchcraft movement used to be- all hidden covens and false names, I do love the way the internet has allowed me to connect to more people! Being able to find people who practice similar things to my own, who I would never normally be able to meet because of the location! Your turn. What's one fun fact about you? Today I'm rereading Hellebore- The Sacrificial issue from 2019! I normally buy one whenever I'm down in London, however that's obviously been lacking in the last year or so! When so much of our spirituality is lived online in this day and age, it can become easy to be insecure about our practice. When our altars don't look as fancy as another's. When we have less statuary. When we have things on our altar that are important and necessary to our practise but may look too 'cutesy', 'weird' or just otherwise odd to the majority of people. When we don't feel like we are as 'witchy' as other people. It's ok, you do you. Only ever use others images as inspiration, let it fuel your soul fire. Never use it to shame yourself or pressure yourself and end up distorting your path. It can be easy to fall under the sway of others. We're often moved by great works of art, by stories, poems and song. They move the heart and soul. What has moved you? What rocked your world so entirely that you never looked at life the same again? 💛 Tansy Ragwort 💛 Jacobaea vulgaris The incredibly toxic common ragwort is an incredibly important part of the eco system here- supporting over 115 species of insect! While I believe that certain deities have overall stewardship of certain aspects of life, that doesn't mean I always expect to find them there. I don't expect Diana to be in every lake, I don't expect Hekate to speak through every key, and I don't expect Vesta in every fire. This is 'The River Gods Cave' at Stourhead Park. It reminds me of this concept. Much of my understanding of areas of guardianship comes from my Indigenous Fairy Faith. Where you have the courts of fairy. Each land has it's own courts that then respond to the highest court of Fairy- to the Good Queen and King. Their alliances is what makes things flow. I see individual spirits in every river and lake- perhaps many, moving swift or slow and in sync with their own environment. I could ask them to take my messages to the Lord of their domain, ask them to pass along offerings. (Especially if this is a first contact situation) I don't see one God having dominion over all, but rather harmonious groups lead by voices that talk the strongest, the wisest. This is what this one unnamed River God says to me. I have no name, but ask and I can deliver. I have no name, but we can work together. I have no name, but I can give you access to those who work with me, and to whom I serve. ✨ Lake and mirror magic ✨ Lakes are an interactive form of mirror magic. They can take whole worlds inside themselves, and draw down the power of the moon. You can invoke the power of a being into the lake, or you can do workings upon your own reflection and take some of the blessed water back with you. I work a lot with lakes and mirrors myself because of not only my connection to the Indigineous Fairy faith of this land, but also because I work with Diana. Diana's temple in Aricia was by a gorgeous lake- 'Speculum Dianae'- Diana's mirror. One practice I have that isn't overly ritualistic is working with the spirits of stone. Laying my hands on the stones surface and sinking into the depths of the spiritworld to communicate with the stone spirits. I make contact and bring them to the surface- many stone spirits can be quite dormant in a landscape. 🌿 The Rowan Tree 🌿 🕯 The Witching Tree 🕯 I found this rowan tree near the top of a mountain, to the side of a gorgeous waterfall. (Penpych Waterfall/Berw Wion) Rowan is a tree of protection against malefica, lightning, and a tree of strength. British folklore says that as a witch, if you hold a particular rowan branch, you can still witch, but you are safe from being witched. Rowan trees also stop the dead from rising, so it is also a good protector of graves. The Temple of Flora, at Stourhead- I can't wait to go back and finally have a look inside! (All building were closed due to Covid Restrictions the last time I was there) This temple used to be dedicated to Ceres- but after the move of the statue to the Pantheon building, this temple was renamed the Temple of Flora.
