Now that I’m starting season 2, to anyone following me, I HIGHLY recommend giving the anime series “Kaguya-Sama: Love is War” a watch. It’s basically a parody of the romcom/K-drama/J-drama genre, but it absolutely works. 

How it’s a parody:

1) The two leads are set up like your traditional K-drama/J-drama protagonists. Kaguya is the rich, upper-class girl who was raised to eventually take control of her family’s business. Shirogane is the handsome popular boy in school, the class president, and the top of his class. 

However, unlike traditional K-drama/J-drama protagonists, they’re written like absolute morons who constantly mess up. For example, Kaguya can’t stop laughing at dick jokes and she needs her maid’s help to set up a Twitter account while Shirogane accidentally blurts out that he likes black panties while another character walks into the room, completely unaware of the context of the situation.

2) Chika is the dumb and ditzy friend. The joke with her character is that, even though she’s dismissed as the idiot of the group, she’s actually the most competent member. For example, she’s the one who has to teach Shirogane how to play volleyball and the one who teaches Kaguya what sex is. So yeah…the show “subverts your expectations” by writing the dumb one as the smart one.

3) For Ishigami, I feel he’s actually a parody of the “cool” anime boys in this genre. You know, the dark-haired handsome one who looks kinda emo and says something smart every now and then (like Levi from Attack on Titan). The joke with his character is that, even though he’s set up as the cool one, he’s actually the most unpopular member and is considered the least desirable of the boys. He’s constantly getting beaten up after he says something profound and just never seems to catch a break. Basically, he’s Levi from Attack on Titan but written as Jerry Gergich from Parks and Rec. 

4) In season 2, we’re introduced to Miko. She’s supposed to be the moral authority of the group, the one who always criticizes the others for their bad habits and immoral behavior. The joke with her character is that she actually has the dirtiest mind among the group. Like, she makes a big deal about how the others are filthy and impure, but then she’ll have fantasies about Kaguya stepping on Shirogane. There’s even a subtle joke with her where in one scene, she thinks Kaguya and Shirogane are about to have sex. Kaguya asks Miko to “join them” (note: it’s just a massage, that’s the misunderstanding here), and instead of calling them out on their behavior, Miko says, “I’m just a novice!” 

(this is the “sad” theme / the Winter Sonata parody. But instead of playing it during a sad moment, they play it right after something really stupid happens lol)

5) Outside of the character parodies, there are several scenes that are direct parodies of the genre. For example, the “sad” music that plays when someone does something fucking stupid is a parody of Winter Sonata’s sad theme. There’s an episode where the artwork temporarily changes to mimic shoujo manga (manga aimed at teen girls, usually romance). 

Also, you know how in K-dramas/J-dramas, the main characters have those “misunderstandings” where they get offended by their partner for something they don’t have the full context of? That’s this show…but on crack. Like I wrote earlier, there’s a scene where there’s a misunderstanding over black panties. 

So yeah…10/10, my favorite anime as of now. Every episode is hilarious, even the ones where they get serious with the plot.

I’m just gonna rant for a second don’t mind me but I want to talk about how fucking BRILLIANT the character writing for Tohru is. You have this girl who initially, and I mean from the get-go, had a very polite personality inherited from her father. As she grew up, she continued this polite personality which grew into one of selflessness and kindness. The problem is after Kyoko died, Tohru’s selflessness became unhealthy. She had so much overwhelming guilt from her mother’s death that it manifested into something that consumed Tohru’s mindset, personality, and thought process. She disregarded herself so much that she began to see herself as nothing; not human, not anything. And all of this is hidden under what we see on the surface: Tohru’s happy-go-lucky personality.

Hence, this is part of why Tohru falling in love is something she is both terrified of and cannot comprehend. Monogamous love is so selfish in nature. It’s the feeling and want of having one person in that special place in your heart, something Tohru can’t imagine for herself. So when she falls in love with Kyo, someone who is so far out of her reach because of the Curse, his own self hatred and disregard, AND the fact that he’s going to locked away at the end of graduation.... it makes it so much worse. It’s a genius juxtaposition, having someone who is so selfless experience a feeling that is so selfish.
