regardless of a myriad of other AI discourse talking points i'm not touching with a 10 ft pole, i think it should always be disclosed when i'm looking at something AI generated. like that's a basic level of societal courtesy, right. AI images more than any new technology that has changed the course of humanity seem to be inseparable from a purposeful obfuscation of their origin. the gimmick is to deceive human perception, their entire purpose is to make you believe you are looking at something created by sentience. AI is at its core a tool for deception and i mean that as a neutral statement. it's a mimic, a pantomime. impersonation. and that is, ethics aside, annoying as all fuck

Holy shit, they got Voyager 1 working again!

15 billion miles away and NASA was able to tweak code packages on one of the onboard computers and it worked and Voyager 1 is sending signals back to earth for the first time since November.

on the one hand I remain kind of miffed that I was a) sick and b) don't check work email on weekends such that I missed the invite from my colleague-who-is-also-my-ex's-high-school-bff to hang out with said ex for a morning yesterday, on the other hand this did preserve our streak of quite literally never meeting up without also hooking up since we broke up, which I continue to find very funny

#admittedly the last time we met up was like... well prior to covid so it's not exactly fair to call it a sustained streak but hush #I don't even like the man (also he's a man) and every successive hookup was worse and worse #it's just muscle memory at this point and it amuses me #the colleague is really the funny part here since we're halfway across the country from where those two were in high school #and she and I now have kids the exact same age and work at the same place #I would have liked to introduce my kid though! I don't dislike him that much! feh

the Federation itself as a concept is so funny because the founding members are

the Vulcans, who have been friends with humanity for years but don't seem to actually like them all that much, instead regarding them with a sort of perverse fascination usually reserved for virology labs

the Andorians, who were fighting the Vulcans for like a hundred years

the Tellarites, who don't like any of these people and whose cultural trait is arguing, and

humans, whom nobody knew existed until last century when they shot themselves into space on a heavily modified nuke, invented world peace and won a fight with the nearest imperial superpower

like imagine you're the Romulan Empire and these weird monkeys who've barely figured out interstellar travel show up on your doorstep in the equivalent of a shipping container with missiles strapped to it, kick your ass in front of everybody, and then start a friendship club with 3 of your neighbours who all hated each others' guts until like a year ago. now I understand why every Romulan on the show is so angry
