early last year i came to terms w how abusive my family was growing up, especially when i was very very young

i was talking to my mom on the phone last night and she was trying to get me to visit home, just "a weekend trip to see family" and idk how to tell her like. if the only people i was seeing back home was family i would not go home period.

this reminds me of a former coworker, we both have autism, and we did like a company personality test thing.

her #1 trait was empathy, and it was dead last on my list.

one morning she comes in complaining that she didn't sleep and then described in detail about how her neighbor was getting beat by her husband, like a very clear domestic violence situation, and seemed to not care at all about anything except the fact that she couldn't sleep.

and ever since then i wonder what the fuck empathy even is, as defined by neurotypicals.

Autistic spaces are getting so much more hostile towards people with low empathy, and it sucks

There was a subreddit I really liked, people were chill, and then there was a sudden influx of people making posts like ‘Autistic people have empathy! Saying we don’t makes us seem like monsters! Thats not a symptom!’ And people making posts explaining that no, actually, some of us do have low empathy got attacked and told they were wrong or ableist? And it sucks, because its just so hard to find a place to exist where you can be seen as not evil? I don’t know, it just hurts a lot to be told that

Not feminist as in "women should be included in the draft" but feminist as in "being drafted is a violation of bodily autonomy for any gender".

The draft should not exist. Drafting people into the military is a violation of human rights. You should not be able to force someone to risk their life. If you can't find enough people who care about a conflict to keep it going then it simply shouldn't keep going. You can't even force someone to donate a kidney using government power, why the fuck can you force them to donate their whole body and life to a cause they don't agree with or don't care about?

One of my close friends is a working artist and has been our entire adult lives, he's in his mood 30s right now. He's a traditional artist with very little social media or online presence, he makes a living doing the following:

instructing paint nights

running art programs for kids and seniors (w grants from the city)

portraits of rich people's cats

other commission work, and selling prints of his original works

it's been scrappy for him at times but the more the city programs pick up the more stable his income becomes. i think art is a really varied career in terms of stability and what you can do, but, it all takes solid networking skills whether online or offline.

I think at some point in time we need to sit down and start explaining to artist who want to make a career out of art that there are FAR more options than just "living off of commissions" and "posting my art online and praying I get paid for it".
