You guys are lucky this happens only like, what, once or twice per century (at least for now)? Living in southeast coastal states is downright miserable every August-October, and living inland (Atlanta in my case) doesn't do much good (I still remember when Zeta knocked out power for much of the metro for almost a day).

My family and I are ok- just lost some tree branches and had quite a small lake in the backyard. Most of the major flooding happened in other areas, but we were ready just in case. I can tell you, it all made quite a mess! We've gotten cleaned up and back to normal, though.

The West coast is exceedingly lucky that hurricanes rarely affect us. As far as I'm aware, we've only had 7 or 8 affect us since records were kept, and most of the time the "hurricanes" have downgraded to "tropical storms" by the time they reach where I live (about 30 miles East of Santa Monica beach.)

On the other hand, we do have a yearly "fire season"...

Have you ever watched some animated film outside your comfort zone that made you go "what in the hell did I just watch?"

Last night I watched the '80s adult cult classic Heavy Metal. How I was able to sit through an hour-and-a-half of scenes like this (and then some) with a straight face, I'll never figure out.

In short; yes.

In long; My sister and I make a habit of viewing lots of garbagebecause we're fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Rifftrax. Watching with a straight face is actively discouraged.

Here's one of their "animated" offerings called "Attack of the Super Monsters," which is some kind of anime with live-action dinosaur puppets. It features clunky animation, awful dubbing, terrible effects and an incomprehensible script; i.e. perfect for riffing. It will destroy any braincells you managed to save after "Heavy Metal." I know- I haven't any brain at all!

I have a list of favorites if you're a real masochist.

Working hard on all my projects! That's why it took me a few days to get to this. Apologies!

Now, on to your questions! If you were looking for short answers you asked the wrong person. Abandon all hope ye who enter here!

I’ll get to the shorter answers first:

“Who do you ship?”- Let me preface this by stating that I don't really care about ships, canon or otherwise. Like… at all. It takes a LOT to make me care about a romance in any story. Luckily, MHA is an action-shonen anime, so not a lot of that going on. However, I will try to put some more thought into this topic than I usually do. 

If we’re talking confirmed canon ships (discounting married couples), the only two I can even think of are Midoriya/Ochako and Denki/Jiro. I’m sure there are others, but MHA is (thankfully) very light on romance, so those two seem to be the only ones that have actually been confirmed as canon. (Forgive me if I’m wrong; I literally had to Google “canon MHA ships”.) Midoriya/Ochako is cute, and I love their dynamic. I think they'd be a good/healthy couple, but they're perfectly fine just as friends. Denki/Jiro is also sort of cute, a little more on the “belligerent sexual tension” side, but there’s not nearly as much to work with. That may be because these two don’t get as much focus as characters, I don’t know. Overall, the students in this show are more mature than their peers, so they’ve had to be more thoughtful about their futures and life decisions. They’re also still just kids. Adolescent relationships almost never last irl, and in fiction they seem to be portrayed in a similarly shallow vein, so I see no point getting invested.

If we’re talking non-canon, it’s still not my thing. I kind of low-key ship All Might/Inko Midoriya, but ONLY if Hisaishi Midoriya was out of the picture (I HATE cheating, even in fiction). That’s probably about it. I steer clear of shipping wars, so I’m not going to get into any of the other non-canon ships. I don’t care enough to paint a target on myself. 

The ships I really care about are the friendships. I'm way more into those, and found family! MHA is full of both, which is one of the many reasons I love it! (If you want to know who I “ship” in terms of “friendships” I’ll post a follow-up answer for that.) 

“Least favorite characters?”- I’m going to qualify my answer by setting aside characters you’re meant to dislike/hate (i.e. the villains/the Hero Safety Commission). Of those left, Mineta might be the only character I actively dislike. I think his design is fun, and his quirk is offbeat, but his personality is mostly awful. If he was a villain, or just some random background person, he wouldn’t grate as much. But Mineta is supposed to be funny and sympathetic. I don't hate him, I just... That character type (95% pervert) has never appealed to me, no matter the series. I'm glad he's gotten a bit better in the last few arcs, but it's been too little, too late for me to really like him. 

I also found Monoma irritating, but he’s gotten better.

Now onto my “long” answer. You have been warned! 

“Fav MHA character(s)?”- I have to say, a big part of the reason I love most of the characters in this show is the translation/VA work, as well as the animation. This may be the best English VA cast for a show I’ve ever heard, and the translation is exceptional. 

Aside from that, I love (or love to hate) pretty much all the main and side characters in the whole series. I think they all have something interesting to contribute to the story, even if they’re only in one scene. On the “villain” side, Twice is arguably my favorite, but I find all the main baddies compelling, and even some of the minor ones. On the “hero” side, the class 1-A kids have a special place in my heart, along with Mirio, Tamaki, All Might and Aizawa. 

However, if I have to pick favorites, my top 3 are Midoriya, Todoroki and Kirishima; not necessarily in that order. And that’s only if I have to really whittle it down, because the top tier would be even larger otherwise. (I do love a good ensemble!) Since you asked my reasons for picking my favorite(s), and I’m trying hard not to write an essay, I shall break it down thusly:

TODOROKI

Cool quirk!

Fun to draw

Half-and-half hair

Has scar; I want to hug him

Hidden sweet side

Also sassy

Overall bishonen looks without being aware of it (or not caring)

Dual personality like his quirk: cool-headed warrior/socially awkward teen 

Takes some things literally (with amusing results)

Curb-stomps multiple thugs at USJ like it's nothing

Snarks at said thugs about how they should be embarrassed

Loves his mum

Screw the rules, I’m doing what’s right!

Will throw hands if you hurt his friends

Terrible upbringing, still wants to be a hero like All Might

Commission for someone on Deviantart. Little Shota Aizawa is just starting to get his quirk in, but he thinks he just has dry eyes. (This kid will grow up to single-handedly keep every maker of eye-drops in business. ) I designed Aizawa's mum's look. Nothing too special; her appearance is a lot like his. The commissioner states that Aizawa's mum's quirk is telekinesis activated by eye-contact. (I think it's headcanon...do we know anything about Aizawa's family? MHA Wiki, you have failed me! ) Mama Aizawa manages to catch the plate in time as her precocious boy’s quirk kicks in.

That background was a pain, but... I got to do more My Hero Academia-related art! Yaaaaay!

Oh, heck, I've had plenty of projects yanked before completion. The only difference is everyone who worked on Batgirl got way more money for a canned project than I ever will for a finished one.

Then again, I've never had endless, "how humiliating was this experience?" interviews, so there's that.

Hi,

I was wondering how is it going on part 4 of the story?

It's coming! I actually had to completely re-write the darn thing, which meant re-storyboarding, which means... is-a longer time. >_< 

I couldn't leave it as it had been, though, because it just wasn't working. Which...explains why it was taking so long to begin with. I was fighting against the obvious.

Any movies you've seen lately/planning to see?

Oh, golly... Um... I haven't been back to a theater since before the pandemic, so the movies I've watched have been through streaming sites. I hope that still counts!

Luca, Encanto and Turning Red are the only truly "new" movies I've seen in a loooong time. Oh, and I did manage to see My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission.

Other than that, my sister and I like to indulge in watching Rifftrax versions of various films. Rifftrax is funny commentary done by some of the original cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and synced over existing movies. Their targets run the gamut from larger-budget stuff like Jurassic World and the Star Wars franchise, way down to no-budget rot like Dancin': It's ON! and Feeders, and even old-timey black-and-white B-movies.

Other than whatever the latest thing is from Rifftrax (and waiting for season 6 of My Hero Academia) I'm not even sure what's coming up, or even out now. I tend to see things waaaaay after everyone else XD

The original image (left) was done for a private commissioner. They wanted an action pose of Deku in his costume from the latest MHA movie, "World Heroes Mission". Everything else was pretty much left up to me.

Anyway, I love this little broccoli child! (Also, I really dug the World Heroes Mission costumes for Deku, Todoroki and Bakugo. I was sad they weren't in more of the movie! )

The variant image (right) was something I came up with while sketching out the pose and listening to the news. I asked the commissioner if I could do a version of Deku in Ukranian colors, smashing the Russian symbol for "attack the Ukraine because reasons". The commissioner was completely on-board with my idea. I almost never get into politics with my art, but this war is one of the clearest cases of good vs. evil I've ever seen. Art is one of the few ways I can cope with something like this.

I want to make clear that I don't place blame on the rank-and-file Russians just trying to live their lives under an extremely toxic regime. I have known and worked with both Russians and Ukranians, and they are all gutted and appalled. A long-time friend of our family is from the Ukraine and lives in L.A. , but her family is still there. She's been begging them to escape to the U.S. and stay with her, but they're determined to fight for their homeland. They won't budge. I think the Ukranian people are showing us all the true meaning of "Plus Ultra!" right now.

Hiya, how’ve you been? So quick question, I’ve seen you juggle your art and making Cause and Effect with your job in real life and still somehow seem to do it flawlessly. I haven’t been drawing that much lately because of the exact reason that I have to juggle my pleasures and reality(aka my pain). So anyways, how do you juggle it all, like your time management, how?

I think "flawlessly" is a vast overstatement, but thanks for the vote of confidence! (Part 4 is taking forever because I've been pulling extra shifts since October, and also carpal-tunnel syndrome hit me pretty hard). It's difficult to balance obligations and fun. Honestly, time-management is really hard, and I'm not the best at it. (Sleep? What is sleep?) I'll do my best to answer your questions (without rambling) after the break.

The only advice I have, really, is what I've had to learn myself the hard way, and I keep having to re-learn it, because human brain = dumb. My advice is two-fold: drop things you don't need that don't bring you happiness; and set aside one day a week for rest.

Advice the first: Cutting out extraneous stuff can be hard, because you don't always realize what you're doing with your time and why. For instance, while it's necessary to keep up with certain things online, we also spend a lot of our free time on our devices doing nothing of value. Sometimes it's nice to wander the net mindlessly, but it's really addictive, too. I've gotten trapped in meme-wormholes several times and looked up to find that hours have gone by. Whenever I start to get sucked in I have to pull back and ask myself, "Would I rather spend my time doing this, or (insert thing I love here)?" That's just an example, but there are lots of things that eat up our time that we probably don't need.

As far as balancing work and non-work, it's trickier because it's not just you making choices about how to spend your time. Depending on your job, and where you do it, separating "work" and "non-work" can be difficult. If the job has certain set hours, try your best not to take work home. If you have to do so, set a time-limit for yourself- like, an hour- and when the time is up, STOP. Same thing with chores; do the ones that are necessary for that day, then STOP.

The hardest thing of all, I think, is allowing yourself the time to do non-work, non-chore things. I do some of my jobs from home, so I tend to feel super-guilty when I'm not working because I'm still in the same place, so there's no barrier between one world and another. I have to consciously allow myself to stop working. Depending on what I have to do I set a time-limit of 8 hours, and then NO MORE WORK. Sometimes I have to leave my computer and go into another room, but whatever works.

My second main point of advice is to take a day out of your week for physical/mental rest. My reasons are at least partly religious (Sunday is the Sabbath), but it's good sense in general. Mind and body need to recuperate. No matter what I have to do that week working on Sunday is absolutely out. I spend a lot of time with my family on Sundays, but I also take time for myself just to relax, listen to music, catch up on naps, etc. I even plan my shopping so I don't need to do it on Sunday. Just one less thing to worry about.

Side note: Sometimes that day of is for more specific physical rest. I used to do a lot of my personal projects on Sundays. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to for several months because I'm slowly getting over carpal-tunnel syndrome. For now, Sundays now mean doing as little with my hands as possible. In a few months (hopefully) I'll be able to pick up my old projects again.

Anyway, whatever your external reasons for it- religious or not- set aside one day each week and- barring emergencies and necessary daily chores- don't let anyone mess with it. Have that day to look forward to as a set thing, wherein you do things that you enjoy. Draw, take walks, visit family, watch movies; again, allow yourself the time. You'll find your mental and physical health improve, and you'll have many more drawings to post!
