Yes, the idea of Sokka kissing Zuko first and leaving him bewildered is cute…
But imagine- Zuko just going for it and kissing Sokka in the middle of a conversation. Quick and over before he can even process it, Zuko’s ears turning red as realization sinks in. For once shutting Sokka up, leaving him breathless, his jaw dropped, his heart pounding.
And before Zuko can apologize or pretend he didn’t just kiss him, Sokka grabs him by the front of his shirt and is returning the kiss, drowning him with his affections.

I warned you that I was reentering my ATLA phase. 🤣 here's a little zukka with a splash of Suki because I just love them okay
There was an assassination attempt.
There was an attempt on Zuko's life, and Sokka was at the markets rather than at the palace like he should have been.
He heard the alarm ringing out as soon as the attack began, and while the other shoppers all looked up in confusion and curiosity, Sokka felt his heart drop into his stomach. He knew what those bells meant.
His limbs felt numb as he began to push his way through the crowd. They weren't moving out of his way fast enough. He couldn't think straight, could only yelp as his knees gave out beneath him. Small, strong hands gripped his arms and kept him upright. He was vaguely aware of Stuhti calling his name from behind him.
His mind snapped to attention when he heard her say, "maybe it's best if we stay here until-"
"No," he snapped. The words sounded furious and defiant even to his own ears. He'd apologize to her later. "Get me there now."
Stuhti nodded in understanding before stepping in front of him. "Out of our way!"
The crowd hadn't paid much mind to Sokka in his common Water Tribe garb, but Stuhti was in her full Kyoshi regalia. The people parted for her quickly and easily.
The numbness vanished in an instant, adrenaline taking over, and suddenly Sokka couldn't move fast enough. He needed to get back to the palace, needed to be there to protect Zuko, he should have never left, he should be with him-
"He'll be fine," he heard the warrior assure him as they left the crowd behind. "Suki is with him. She'd never let anything happen to him. And even if she wasn't, the Fire Lord is a powerful man in his own rights."
He knew that. He knew that. But that didn't stop the fear from crawling up his spine, creeping into his heart, blurring the edges of his mind.
They reached the palace gates, where two guards were standing watch, glancing uneasily between the ringing bell and the pair approaching them.
"Open the gate," Sokka demanded, and immediately one of them scrambled for the latch.
The bell stopped ringing. All of them turned to look up at it, but none of them relaxed. That meant the attack was over, not that everything was okay again.
As soon as the gate swung open, Sokka ans Stuhti pushed through and began the sprint for the palace. The courtyard was deserted, and the main door of the palace was open. Sokka could hear the shouts and commands before he even raced through the door.
The commotion stopped as the guards and warriors spotted him. He didn't even have to ask before he was being pointed down a hall.
"Ambassador. He's with Suki in his quarters."
Hearing that Zuko was okay did nothing to ease his panic. He needed to see him, touch him, hear his voice-
Stuhti stayed behind as Sokka made the now-familiar journey towards the Fire Lord's chambers. It took less than a minute, but every second felt like a lifetime.
The door was shut and no one was guarding it, but that didn't matter. Sokka shoved it open, slammed it behind him.
"Zuko."
He was there, seated in an armchair, alive and breathing and smiling up at Suki. He turned when he heard Sokka, and then he was on his feet, crossing the room in a few easy strides.
Sokka collapsed into his arms, clung to him, buried his face in Zuko's neck. Relief settled through him and for a moment, he thought he might cry. "You're okay."
"I'm fine," Zuko said. He held Sokka just as tightly and pressed a kiss to his temple. "I didn't even realize what was going on until it was practically over."
"Honestly, we didn't get in on any of the action," Suki said, sounding a little disappointed.
"You say that like it's a bad thing," Sokka grumbled, finally letting go of Zuko and reaching out for Suki instead. She sighed and melted against him, tucking her head under his chin.
"You know, we've been given the rest of the day off," Zuko said, and Sokka could hear his smile.
"Good," Sokka replied, letting go of Suki and eyeing Zuko as he backed up towards their bed. He sat on the edge of it, grinning as the Fire Lord began to approach him with a fond and slightly hungry look. He threw himself backwards into the mattress. "I could use a long nap after the morning I've had."
Suki giggled as Zuko sputtered at him. "The morning you've had? What about the morning we've had?"

Dallas and Ian both single handedly resurrecting “Zukka” from the dead was not on my 2024 bingo card this year and yet HERE WE ARE. Dallas told us to ship it again, he practically begged us too. 🙃😉

anyway zukka is so fucking good it's about zuko feeling like his bending will never be good enough and then meeting this brilliant badass nonbender boy it's about sokka feeling underestimated/unseen and zuko seeing him as so talented and intelligent that he's literally irreplaceable it's about zuko seeing himself as irredeemable and sokka treating him like an equal
it's about both of them growing up lonely and finding company in each other it's about both of them being surprised by how easy it is to be around each other it's about sokka talking and zuko listening it's about zuko having trouble understanding people and sokka being endlessly patient and helpful
it's about both of them growing up with warrior fathers who expected them to be warriors and turning out to be softhearted diplomats

happy first birthday aidays! here's a short snippet from chapter 9, and the answer to like half the asks in my inbox:
"Do you - do you have my jacket?"
"This morning was so crazy, I nearly died like twice, I totally forgot it," Sokka says, hanging his head. "Sorry. Tomorrow, for sure."
The words are barely out of his mouth when it hits him, finally. If he doesn't give the jacket back, he can keep coming to see Zuko.
Is that what it meant, this whole time?
Here's your excuse. Sokka wants to bang his head against the counter.
One side of Zuko's mouth ticks up in a shy smile. "Tomorrow."
Sokka wonders if he'll ever stop being a sucker for that smile.
"Hey," he says, and fishes his phone from his pocket, "do you want to see Momo in his cone?"
Zuko's eyes light up, and that smile breaks out wider across his face, and Sokka falls and falls and falls.
read chapters 1-8 of and ill do anything you say (if you say it with your hands) here

hey guys. aidays chapter 9 sneak peek bc i am no longer writers blocked. have fun
Momo’s recovery period, according to the white coats at the clinic, is four weeks of round-the-clock care.
Sokka calls work the second he’s home, and tries to cash in every vacation day he’s refused to spend for the last four years. It doesn’t work like that, apparently, so he sends up a prayer that Suki doesn’t bring home any more mystery illnesses and throws his remaining sick days on top.
It takes an hour of negotiation - “Look,” he says to Piandao on the other end of the line, frustration pinching the bridge of his nose, “it’s either this or I bring my incredibly adorable and currently very pitiful cat to the office with me, and then no one gets any work done at all. Your call.” - and a sly text to Toph calling in a favour she doesn’t even owe him, but he gets the time off.
So Zuko’s jacket hangs untouched on the back of Sokka’s door for four weeks.
It’s not that Sokka’s avoiding Zuko, he’s just - prioritising.
And if “prioritising” means being cooped up at home all day with a cat who, in his current vulnerable state, won’t reject him after confronting the events - the almost-events - of that night, then so be it. Sokka’s not one to complain about a gift horse’s mouth, or whatever.
The thing about the jacket is, it makes a statement. It’s an invitation, of sorts. But the thing about that is that Sokka doesn’t know if there’s an expiration date on it. He doesn’t know how long he has before Zuko comes looking for an answer to the question he didn’t really technically ask, how long he has before Zuko decides Sokka’s not worth the trouble and can he please just have his jacket back, and while you’re at it he doesn’t want the spare key anymore, either.
Sokka wants to answer. He does. He wants so badly to take that invitation and RSVP yes and forever, but he - he can’t. He can’t, because he doesn’t know how, and he doesn’t know what the hell he’s even agreeing to, or if there’s a dress code, and he definitely doesn’t know what Zuko wants.
And that’s what it boils down to, really: he doesn’t know what Zuko wants.
Sokka knows what he wants, and that he wants it so badly it might just kill him, but Zuko is still a mystery, and he’s not even sure if he wants to solve it.
So for four weeks, he tells himself that ignorance is bliss, and pretends not to be a terrible liar.
and i'll do anything you say (if you say it with your hands)
