Final Piece
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
overall my final piece went quite well there was quite a few struggles in the piece when making it and that happened to be sewing the top half to the bottom half because of the thickness of the two pieces from the layering of the top and bottom half with the petals and the leaves being thick from the wiring and the interfacing to keep the wiring up in the final piece. another thing that I found difficult to do during my final piece was the wiring of the petals and the leaves as I struggles to cut the wires and then thread it into the tubbing as well as when sewing it all together the waist band line got messy because once I sew the first petal or leaf onto the base it would drag that side down so it was difficult to sew the other on as it was moving as the the other side would be dragging it away because of its weight. the things that have gone well during my final piece has been the whole outcome, even though I found a few things difficult or messed up slightly I managed to recover from it one way or another the main example of this is that the waist band was jagged but I recovered from it by adding Suffolk puffs I had pre made for one of my other ideas and used them around the waist band to cover it up and add more detail around it all as well as some yellow beaded embellishments which brought a pop of colour to the piece as well as some finer detail that is quite eye catching. wiring the piece was difficult but I am glad that I did it because its really made the unique in a certain way by allowing me be able to shape some of the leaves and the petals to make it look more realistic and natural because not all petal and leaves are uniform and the same shape throughout the flower. the embroidered details on the leaves also went really well even though from afar they are not very noticeable it is a nice detail to have the leaf look somewhat like a real one rather than being an oblong tear drop shape with no detail. however in my original idea I was not planning on adding the beaded embellishments to my piece but it was suggested to me by my teacher Emily to use it so I tested it a few times on the piece and I really liked it for the reason that it brought another colour other than a blue or a green to the piece and allowed the eye to focus on the main dress around the waist line. as shown above I decided to photograph my final piece on the mannequin because I could not find a place suitable to the theme to photography myself in the dress so to keep it simple I photographed it in the collage studio on a plain white background so when looking at the photos everyones eyes will be on my final piece e and not the minor details around the piece in the background if I photographed it in a different way. Photographing it on the mannequin. as well allowed me to mould all the petals and leaves in certain ways to showcase what I had made and the wiring in it that I used to create my final piece.

Final Piece pt 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final piece pt 3-
Along the waist band I decided to add some Suffolk puffs as well as some embellishments such as yellow beads to bring the two pieces of the top and bottom together and to hide away my very bad sewing of the two pieces together because when I see them together it was rather difficult and tricky because I couldn’t do it by machine as with all the wires it became to thick and heavy to pull through the machine so I decided to hand stitch it and in a few places it became jagged and wonky so seeing the Suffolk puffs onto the wait band to hide some of the more scruffier pieces, however I added some beaded embellishments as well to my piece, as in a yellow bead to add another colour to draw the two together but it can represent the anther with all the pollen on it.

Liza Lou
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Liza Lou is an American artist who creates her sculptures using glass beads, she first gained attention in 1996 when her room sized sculptured kitchen was put on display in New York and because of how outstanding the piece is glass beads then became a fine art tool to use to create amazing colourful pieces like Liza Lou’s shown above. her work can be rather bright and large with hundreds of tiny details which would of had hours put into it; I would like to add some bright beading to my pieces around the waist but not too much as shown above as it would take me quite a lot of time when I do not have long to produce my final piece, I am moved by the amount of effort and time this would of taken and the final outcome has inspired me to do a large beaded peace for a final piece for another topic, if I was to do a sculpture piece I would of been heavily inspired by Liza’s work and the depths and details of all of her pieces.

Ran Hwang
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ran Hwag was born in Korea but based in New York and reflects her work on the cycle of life and death, visibility and invisibility and instant beauty. she previously worked in the fashion industry and has used her experience to help her now in her embellished works as well as using her personal experience with 9/11. to create her work she looks back through her experiences with a Eastern zen philosophy and uses everyday household objects like beads and buttons etc, to help create these huge pieces. Although I do not plan on creating a huge piece I like the way she uses colours and creates her pieces of work with how bright they are even though she is only using everyday objects. I shall use the beads in my work around the waist to help bring the two halves together along with the Suffolk puffs to add a pop of colour. the pieces shown above are very intricate and happen to also use buttons which I might se if I can not install a zip or think of another method to help somebody get in and out of the said dress I am going to make.

Tim Walker

Tim walker-
Tim Walker is a photographer who has had his photos in the vogue Magazine for over a decade featuring his unique style which involves extravagant staging as well as romantic motifs characterise, these are all heavily detailed and capture many things that are all eye catching, in both the foreground and back ground there is a lot of objects placed around the main piece but the all end up focusing towards the middle where therein piece is. Tim’s style is rather unique with the staging and how the fashion pieces are shown in the photography, he uses several different ways to photograph the piece as well as different filters to create different outcomes for the fashion outcome; in all his backgrounds/foregrounds there's always something  that relates to the fashion piece. I want to show the uniqueness of my fashion piece through my photographs however not in Tim Walker’s style because personally I am not a big fan of the layouts and how they come out, although they are unique I don't like most of the set ups and don't find them bright enough for my piece as well as I do not think I will be able to link the background objects to my final piece or find a place big enough to create a Photography area like this.

Kirsty Mitchell-
Kirsty Mitchell is a British photographer, at first she started working with art and fine design but at the age of 19 she worked in costume design and in the years 1999-2000 she worked as an intern for Alexander McQueen, after that Hussein Chalayan between the years 2000-2001 after that she graduated in the year 2001 at the age of 25. after graduating she spent the next decade working as a senior fashion designer under Karen Millen but at 32 she rediscovered her love for photography unfortunately during this time her mum had been diagnosed and died of terminal cancer which through Kirsty right into her work. her style of photography is very bright and colourful with what's being photographed and is heavily detailed in what's being photographed in the foreground and background, this has inspired me to take my piece outside when it is nice and sunny and find a heavily forested area or flower filled area so I can photograph my piece there so it fits in with the theme of my dress. I like the boldness and the uniqueness of Mitchell’s Photography and how bright the colours are and how they contrast with each other, the greens in all of the pieces really make the actual colours of the flowers pop and stand out as well as eye catching.

Final piece Pt2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final piece making part 2-
After adding all the interfacing and wiring to the petals and the leaves, I used an embroidery machine to add in more finer details such as the midribs and the laminas to the leaves to make it seem more realistic, I then sew by machine all the leaves together to create the skirt piece, first by sewing the non wired pieces together and then adding the two wired pieces in the two gaps at the top to make it a skirt. After creating the skirt piece I cut out two rectangle pieces to sew the petals onto, with this I cut out and sew three pieces for coverage and shape on the final piece, these being the three centre pieces with darts on two of the pieces and interfacing on the middle one to stop it from falling over and flopping about, the two pieces with darts in did not need interfacing however because the darts which added the shaping to the pieces kept it strong and sturdy. After sewing those three pieces in I placed the four wired petals around on a mannequin to help me decide where I want the petal to go and how much arm space I would need to create and how I would make it so I can get in and out of the final piece. I ended up placing two at the front either side of the torso and two on the back in the same place as the front two but on the back so it would be mirrored when looking form it above.

final piece making pt 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i started crafting my final piece off of the templates from my draft dress and i followed and repeated most of the steps with some slight changes, i first started by cutting out three leaves for the base of the skirt that will not be wired for my final piece so everything will be covered on the bottom half of the body, i then cut out four more pieces of the leaf shape but i did not sew the edges inside i kept them undone and ironed on the interfacing on the four of them. after ironing on the interfacing i sew the edges together with the right sides together ( the sides without the interfacing) i then turned it inside out and left the inch and a half for the tubing for the wire on the inside, after the tubing i cut the wire and inserted it into the tubing and then i sew all 5 leaves together including the two leaves with the wiring and interfacing on opposite sides so they balance out each others weight compared to the three other leaves without interfacing or wiring. after working on the leaves i started working on the petals at the top doing a similar thing to the petals as i did with the leaves with interfacing and wiring. so with the petal i cut out two petal shaped fabrics and ironed on the interfacing on all of it, thrn i turned it inside out and then sewed the tubing and then wired it up.

sampling pt2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for my second lot of sampling i was working with interfacing and wiring a petal and a leaf, first i cut out another leaf to practise on, after i did that i cut out the interfacing as the same size of the leaf and i ironed it on , it took a while to stick at first but after that i found it easier to stick down onto the piece by ironing it, after that i cut out anther piece and did the same to it ironing down the interfacing, after doing that again i placed the two pieces and placed them with the right sides facing inside and sew as close around the edges as possible leaving an opening at the top of the leaf so i can turn it inside out again. after turning it inside out i left an inch and a half for the edge to sew again creating a tubing for the wiring. i then cut my wire with wire cutters which was quite difficult as i am left handed and did accidentally cut my hand doing one time but i learnt from my mistakes and the next few times i cut the wire i didn't cut my hand or finger or anything. however with these practice pieces i didn't embroider into them as i would of fount that to waste my time.

sampling
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
for my sampling I first started off with creating a sample piece similar of what i want my final piece would be as well as, I also hand embroidered into a piece of fabric but realised it would of took forever to do it to multiple giant leaves of different thicknesses.so I then decided id then machine embroider the piece as then the lines would be more accurate and similar across all the other leaves. after creating this draft of a dress I decided to add more petals around the top to make it seem more like whoever is wearing the dress is inside a tulip. although by machine I wouldn't be able to add all the even smaller details because of how tedious , pointless and unseen they'll be it wouldn't really matter as I only need the main key important parts of the leaves  embroidered onto the piece. I plan on using a darker green thread for the embroidering on the leaves.

Final Design
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final design-
Above I have drawn out what I would like my final piece to look life, the colours I want it to be as well as how some of the parts are crafter and what is in side them, as I had no colouring pencils, paints or anything else on me to colour the pieces in to make everything more clearer i decided to list the colours instead and label the different parts of how my piece will work and what is inside a few of the leaves in petals to show how they work and how they will be created. an example in the leaves is that the inside is covered with inter facing to strengthen and thicken the piece so it can hold up the wires in the tubing without ripping the fabric. for the final piece i want a fairy tulip inspired dress with leaves and petals that you can bend and mould into different more realistic shaped leaves and petals.

valerie hegarty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Valerie Hegarty is an American artist who makes paintings and sculptures of decaying plants that represent the crumbling state of American society, the work above is quite large and someone what pleasing and eye-catching with many bright colours even though it is meant to be a representation of a decaying flowers and plants. if my final piece was a sculpture or a painting i would like to have it something like this for my final piece, the things that stand out most to me about this piece is the colours and how unique the pieces are and the deep meanings behind it all, but amongst some the pieces is some sculptured or drawn life such as a butterfly which shows to me that maybe there is a hope within the American society and that there is some living life amongst it all. however i am not planning on doing an art piece or an interior piece but in fact a fashion piece and for my fashion piece i would like it to be more alive rather than decaying or dying, and i would like it to be rather bright like a few of the flowers shown in the pieces above.

Ernesto Artillo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ernesto Artillo-
Ernesto Artillo is an Andalusian artist, he is interested in a large range of things and has worked and collabed with many big brands one such as dolce and gabbana. in his work above he uses a range of flowers, colours and angles to create these different pieces of art; his art itself is a very unique style and isn't seen very much at all. i like the simplicity of the colours and some of the pieces above and I'm going to consider using it in my final piece and keep it open as an option for my final piece. the piece has been photographed and then photoshoped to get the final outcome, for my outcome though i would rather do a fashion outcome rather than a digital interior outcome because i feel like my skills reside more in the fashion hands on piece rather than the editing side of the piece.

Miss Sohee
Tumblr media
Miss Sohee-
Miss Sohee also known as Sohee park is a women's wear designer based in London, the feeling of escapism helped her through illustrating her ideas for designs which she then created in real life into dresses. above shown is her peony themed dress from her first collection the girl in full bloom, this dress very much captures what i would like my dress to be like overall where the dress is the flower. the flower and the colours of the dress above is not what i would like mine to be id rather have a different flower that i would have more access too such a a tulip or a lily or some common flower you can find out at spring or in the supermarket. the dress itself is rather extravagant and elegant at the same time and is rather beautiful with what she has created using fabric manipulations as well as all the different silhouettes.

Alexander McQueen Rose Dress
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alexander McQueen rose dress-
the alexander McQueen dress shown above is more of what i would like my final piece dress to be because the actual dress being a flower itself, the colour scheme is not what I want it to be but the concept of the dress is what I want my dress to be like for my final major project. the piece above has lots of balled up and layered fabric to create a rose shaped dress as such when in my dress I don't want there to be as many layers as it would make the piece rather heavy and wouldn't keep the dress up a lot because of what I've envisioned for my final piece.

Fashion design outcomes-
Above I have drawn 4 designs for my final major project that I could do but only one of them is gonna be my final piece, with the 4th design I couldn’t work out where I could get a stretchy enough material for the main part of the dress but not only that I found that it would probably have a lot of fabric waste with the amount of leaves I would have to cut out for my final piece not only that but I’d find the sewing all the patterns onto the leaves and then onto the garment very repetitive and boring so I decided not to go for that design. The 3rd design is more of a ball gown style dress which I would of loved to do but I find the pattern I’ve designed for this dress to be quite simplistic and monotonous as I’d only have 2 or 3 colours in it and the base being the main colour white so I decided against this not only because of the colours but because of how precisely I’d have to cut the Lino to repeat the pattern on the dress. The 2nd dress was almost my main choice but after showing it to my teachers we decided together that it is still quite simplistic and all the ways we could of changed it I didn’t like very much at all, along the dress it would of been covered in blue Suffolk puffs clumped together to make it look like big bunches of small flowers with dark green leaves surrounding them here and there but because I didn’t like any of the things I could change about it and that I couldn’t come up with any that I liked I changed it once again. The 1st design I did was the past one that I drew and is the one I have decided to do for my final piece, the dress itself will be a tulip shaped flower in the colour blue and will have a green leaf skirt, I decided on this one because it allows me to add anything to the piece but not only that it will use wires amongst the piece so I can bend it into different shapes and make it seem more leaf or petal like .

Christopher Kane spring summer 2014 collection
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Christopher Kane spring summer 2014 collection-
In his collection above he uses the clothes to display the contents inside the flower with labels, I feel like this piece is to help educate people on the flower and all the different parts that makes up the flower in the inside. This is far from what I want to do for my final piece as it seems that on the second picture the skirt seems to be a repeated pattern and my dress that I am going to create has nothing to do with pattern repeating, the same pattern seems to be plastered on both pieces of clothing in the photos above on both the shirts and the skirts and this is definitely not what I would like for my piece at all because I don’t want to focus on the patterning of the clothes but more of the style and the extravagantsy of the piece.
