My goodness, what a weekend/life! Still reeling.  Much love to my epic @openmatmma students who stepped up to compete at @davidaguzzi's @GrapplingIndustries. So much courage, success and growth. 💥⚡️✨ Later that night, I was fortunate enough to get to witness history. A martial artist in a world of fighters came back after four years off to not only challenge a champion, but the one a weight class up. If that wasn’t enough, he then weathered a serious storm before putting the champ to sleep(!) - in under three rounds.. very few experiences in life have made me jump up an shout in joy and inspiration.  As special to me was getting to see a good friend who has spent his life honing his craft and building his position, walk out shoulder to shoulder with giants.  After the fights, I got to come back and, with the help of incredibly supportive coaches and assistants, share a new approach to jiu-jitsu with more than 30 women through @fightlikeagirl.o. For the first time, there were two deaf women in the class and to my surprise the class was so much better for it. Seeing the fun, growth and power all of these women felt over the course of a few hours was just awesome.  To all of them, all of my students and coaches, the GOAT, @georgesstpierre and my pal @82Spaniard, thank you for the inspiration. If you don’t know, in addition to being an accomplished MMA fighter, jiu-jitsu competitor and coach, Sumeet is actually a medical doctor who took a year off of practicing to focus on training and competing. Right on.  Came down to the second greatest city in the world (😉) to fight alongside the @OpenMatMMA comp team yesterday at the @ibjjf Pans yesterday. These warriors. I love em! (Descriptions are too long for Instagram, you’ll have to peep my Facebook page for those - here’s the sum up:) There were so many great takeaways, both technical, strategic and psychological. We all grew so much, individually and together this weekend. The medals are awesome and I hope these guys do celebrate - they’ve earned it. But as I said to one of our athletes last week while discussing an old loss:  Growth Mindset. Process, not product. What is the right thing to do after a loss (or a win, for that matter)? Get down/up? Who the **** cares, get back to the mat. Improve - in both cases. Don’t get attached to wins and losses. Or let your sense of self, or your capabilities be influenced by results.  Too many variables, and even then, you’re always improving.  Most people respond to a rough loss by getting down and giving up. You kept going. IN SPITE of doubt. That is the very definition of courage. The doubt was your challenge. Were you big enough to keep fighting in the face of it? That’s the “spiritual” side of it. The mental (/emotional) side. You’re so ****ing epic. Believe in yourself. Trust your work. **** dudes up. A coach’s job is to help people see, tap into and express the greatness inside themselves and these guys, coaching each other did just that. Respect and gratitude, my warriors!! A year ago, my good friend, Muay Thai champion/coach and BJJ purple belt, Kru Eddie Nobrega went into the hospital complaining of leg pain. Doctors discovered a tumour in his spine and immediately removed it. He woke up paralyzed from the ribs down.  This warrior has spent the last year putting the same energy he had put into becoming the 8th-ranked Muay Thai fighter in the world into his recovery. The progress he’s made is phenomenal and a few months ago, he started coming by @OpenMatMMA on Fridays after my lunch class for us to see what we can do on the mats. This man is a ****ing hero. While we were working a month ago, I told him he needs to start sharing his story. People want to hear from him. *I* want to hear from him. He’s taking an incredible, inspiring path and the world would LOVE to have him share it - wouldn’t you agree?
