I've been thinking that maybe the most important part of Good For You is showing what Evan is now becoming, desperately holding onto a lie. he literally yells at his mother and in some sort of way threatens Jared telling him that if the emails get out he will bring him down as well, while there's a song in the background blasting, giving us the perspective of three character that used to be in the background and Evan realizing that he's a whole different person than how he used to be. this song is genius and DESERVED to be in the movie so Evan's choices would've had a bigger impact. smh

so I just saw a review that said something like "it's such a serious movie and then they start singing. maybe they should've left the music for the musical and make the movie serious" and dude I got so OFFENDED. don't you stop to think that maybe, i don't know, people can get through a story easier when there is music they can relate to? why can't a song be taken seriously? i get it isn't realistic having a dude randomly start singing, but have you tried getting out of your bubble and put yourself in that world, where singing is actually taken seriously as part of a character and story development??

so here's my humble, totally not professional review

i actually liked it. way more than i expected.

the first half or so it was kinda weird. i mean, hair was a choice here. yet I'm not one to really watch a movie and focus on the casting choices. maybe they could've cast older looking people to play teens for the rest of the cast and make Ben sorta "fit in". the only thing that weirded me out a little was the couple Evan and Zoe made, where Evan seemed way too old for Zoe. but aside, Ben didn't stood up for me (as in looks and stuff)

now, into the movie. i didn't like Alana's character thorough the whole film. the point of Alana is, she's kinda there to annoy the audience. we pay so much attention to that and when we realize she's actually struggling just as much as pretty much every other character is. here she literally introduces herself to the audience on a formal way with a conversation with Evan about anxiety pills?

I'd say that's the only thing i really hated. aside from Connors woah during sincerely me. anyways, i cried my shit outta this. probably because of my personal experiences w suicide attempts and just depressive thoughts constantly that links me in such a personal way with Evan, although everything he does is completely wrong. I'm one to stick to the message of the movie: that you're not alone, everything will pass and one day all the bad memories will be just that, memories. and on that line, as he always does, Ben succeeds.

also, apart from the rest of the cast obviously not being professional singers, both Kaitlyn with Requiem and Julianne with So Big, So Small got to me so fucking hard. especially because I couldn't think someone would get to me as hard as Rachel Bay Jones does.

so, it exceeded my expectations. most probably because the critics were so determined to destroy this movie piece by piece. apart from cringy moments and dumb mistakes (the tap, tap, tapping parts on waving- jeez, i swear, they really weren't aiming towards edition awards), this is worth a watch. who knows, it might even surprise you.

can we talk about how much better deh reviews and rating are doing now compared to the last few weeks? like if you check on letterboxd the ratings are a lot more mixed than they used to be

idk but i haven't entirely lost my hope for this movie. it's not going to be great, but i just don't believe it's as mediocre as critics are painting it
