I took the day off from work today and ended up finishing the Pokemon Rival Chibi’s! : )
I REALLY like how these came out, and can I just say that this little side piece made me appreciate the design of the rivals so much more, specifically the colour design? It’s SO good! It’s really cohesive and pleasant on the eyes; it’s not too bright but not too dark either, which from my limited knowledge from the art classes I DID take, that’s a sign of good character design!
I think my favourite rival design-wise would have to be Trip; his design is actually quite simplistic, however the colour palette is a mix of warm and cool colours that blend perfectly together and end up making him very recognisable from a design perspective. This also correlates well with his most well-known Pokemon, his starter Serperior, who’s colour palette ends up complementing Trip’s very well when side by side (It’s not as noticable with Trip’s starter when it is a Snivy like in this piece due to Snivy’s colour palette being more cooler toned and brighter/harsher than Serperior’s more lighter palette)
Obviously I love all their designs; I like Gary’s cooler-toned palette as it suits him much better than his game counterpart (Blue) and Paul’s character design as a whole (Both from an artistic and writing perspective) is spectacular. I just simply love Trip’s design the most from an artistic point of view (It might have something to do with me loving warmer colours more than cooler colours lol)
Now that I have references for these characters (Colour/style wise) I hope that’ll compel me to draw them more often; I might even go back on some old artwork and redraw/recolour them now that I have accurate colour palettes. Overall, though my hand ACHES, this was a Monday well spent : )
