Little Witch AU
An AU where Mirabel decides if the Miracle won’t give her a gift, she’ll find her own magic.
I headcanon that people do leave the Encanto to through a secret passage out of the valley. Back when the triplets first got their gifts, Alma had books on magic brought to the Encanto to give to the children so they could have a better understanding of their gifts.
The last time books on magic were brought was when Isabela was born. Agustin wanted to understand and prepare for when his children would get gifts.
Among the books was an actual spell book, though nobody really paid attention to that one.
When Mirabel didn’t get her gift, for the first year she tried to be helpful to the family though they often left her home alone, since Casita could act as a babysitter.
A year after her Ceremony, Mirabel was cleaning around Casita, when she found a book in on of the cabinets that was dustier than the others
A spell book. Mirabel immediately took it upstairs to start reading
One day while just playing around she tried one of the spells and it actually worked! She wanted to show Abuela that maybe she did get a gift she just didn’t have a door. She was shut down and ignored.
After that she continued to practice her magic in secret, hoping to master the art and show Abuela once and for all that she was not the Useless Madrigal

For the one sentence prompts: “Okay, you can let me go now”
"Okay, you can let me go now."
Isabela shakes her head and does not loosen the vines keeping Bruno tied to the chair. "I don't think so Tio Bruno."
"I'm not gonna run again. Pinky promise!"
"That's what you said the last five times, Brunito. " Pepa scolds and keeps laying out the tools she will need. "I'm not gonna run after you again. Just admit defeat."
She takes up the scissors and tries to grab his hair but he evades her. As much as his binds let him.
"Never!"
Pepa huffs and Isabela rolls her eyes. "What's the big deal? Tia Pepa cuts my hair all the time. She's really good."
"Maybe with girls hair! The last time she cut mine she cut it into a Bob! It looked horrible, I'm not gonna go through that again."
"We were 13 and I have apologized a million times already. I'm just gonna cut a tiny bit, you probably won't even see the difference. Just the split ends, Hermano."
It takes a lot of patience and cursing and cajoling but in the end Pepa is allowed to cut his hair.
She really only cuts the split ends. She would never deny herself the ability to tussle that hair every time she wants to annoy her little brother.

Lots of people are sharing Encanto HC right now and I wanna share my favorite, my "I will die on that hill"-HC:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dolores had to promise Bruno that she wouldn't tell anyone where he is. She was not happy about that, but she loves her Tio and she is a loyal soul so she won't outright break the promise. But if the family were just to figure it out themselves?
And so Dolores never told anyone, but she made very, veeeeeery little effort to hide their secret and repeatedly tried to make them suspicious. Which led to 10 years of mindblowing frustration, because her family is DENSE! Oh Dios, they are so DENSE!
I mean, the girl told Mirabel that the rats in the walls were talking. Why did no one question that??? That's not her gift!!!
I imagine her saying stuff like that all the time and everyone just being like "Yeah, that's nice Lolo". Maybe little Antonio heard, but he just thought that the rats were telling really funny stories and so he was like "I wish I could understand them like my big sister. I hope that's my gift…"
And I imagine Camilo hearing Dolores talking to someone but when he turns the corner Lolo is alone in the hallway and he's like "Who are you talking to?" and Dolores just shrugs "Our tio" and Camilo is like "OK cool", not questioning further, because he thinks she is talking about Agustin and the dude just left the hallway before Camilo arrived. And Dolores is ready to rip her hair out in frustration!
The first time I put that hc into words was in one of my fics and I have been a devout defender ever since:
*****
One day Dolores cornered Camilo in the kitchen.
"Why do you tell lies about Tio Bruno? He is not scary at all and definitely not seven-feet tall."
Camilo, in the process of stuffing his pants full of Arepas, just shrugged. "I don't remember a lot about him, but the last time I saw the dude, he was growling like some kind of animal in the dark."
Dolores hit his shoulder and glared at him. "He was not growling. He was crying." A pause and then a huff. "Yes you were!"
Camilo wondered for a second, but then just shrugged it off. Sisters. Who knew what went through their heads?
******
The obliviousness of her family drives Dolores crazy and Bruno is in the walls like "Thank God they are all idiots."
Here is my "El Raton Perez" One-shot. For everyone who did not see the post: apparently in Colombia the tooth fairy is a mouse (sometimes a rat!). I saw that, had a desperate need for more cute Bruno and Antonio interaction, and here we are. Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's happening. It's really happening.
Antonio clutches the blanket tight to his chest. The spot in his mouth where his tooth is missing still aches a little, but that pain was pretty much forgotten the moment he heard the little squeaks coming from under his bed.
When Mirabel had pulled a crying Antonio into her lap and had told him about El Raton Perez, the little boy with one tooth missing had immediately believed her. If there is anything he knows for sure, it's that his favorite prima would never lie to him.
Mirabel is nice. The nicest! She sometimes teases, but only in a funny way. Not like Camilo, who is also nice and funny, but whose jokes sometimes are only funny for himself.
Antonio believes Mirabel, he really does, but a rat that takes your tooth home and gives you money in return also kinda sounds too good to be true.
Well, El Raton Perez will probably bring Antonio candy, since money has long since lost its value here in the Encanto. But even better! The old coins Abuela sometimes gives Antonio so he can play with them are nice to look at and they make funny noises when you shake them in your fist, but Antonio usually gets bored of them rather quickly.
Candy is much better.
"Some think El Raton Perez is a mouse and some think he's a rat." Mirabel had told him just that afternoon. "I think it's a rat here in Encanto. We have a lot of rats, don't you think?"
While Antonio had believed her, he'd thought that she may have been… what does his Papi always call it? Bamboozled. Tricked.
Mira is the best, but she always thinks the best of everyone else as well. If someone had told her a lie about El Raton Perez, she would have believed them. She is not as mature as Antonio, with his four and a half years. That's why he has to look out for her. Like a big boy!
But she was telling the truth! There is definitely a rat under his bed.
The room is dark and he is alone in the nursery. Tia Julieta has forced Mira to have a sleepover with Isabela and Luisa to "strengthen their sisterly bonds.".
Whatever that means, Mira hadn't seemed too happy about it, which is weird. Antonio loves his monthly sleepovers with Camilo. His older brother always declares that they will stay up all night, only to be the first one to fall asleep every time. It's always really funny.
Antonio has no problems sleeping alone from time to time. Casita always watches over them, so there is nothing to be afraid of. But no matter his initial excitement about El Raton Perez, the scratching and squeaking from under his bed are a bit scary in the dark.
He wants to see Senor Perez, but at the same time he kinda wishes the rat would hurry up and leave.
Suddenly there is a weird sound outside his room. Some kind of hissing sound. Antonio bites his lips and pulls the cover higher up so only his eyes peek out. He wonders if he should call out for his Mama, when Casita opens his door a little.
The hissing, which Antonio now realizes hadn't actually been hissing, but a voice going "psst psst psst" immediately stops.
"He's in there, Casita?"
Antonio doesn't recognize the voice, but Casita swings his door a little as if she's nodding. Whoever it is, Casita knows him. Antonio immediately relaxes. Casita loves them a lot. She would never let any harm come to them.
"Miercoles." The voice mutters. After a short pause, someone creeps into the room. It's a man wearing a ruana with the hood up. Antonio can't see his face, only the mouth, which is pressed into a thin, displeased line. The stranger peeks at Mira's bed and then turns to Antonio's side of the room. The little boy closes his eyes and pretends to sleep. After a few seconds, Antonio can hear the man kneel down on the floor. He reopens his eyes into slits and observes the man pressing his cheek against the floor to peer under Antonio's bed. He looks kinda small and scrawny and Casita still doesn't ring any alarms, so he must be okay.
Antonio sits up silently and leans over the side of his bed to get a better look. The man doesn't notice.
"Pssst. Perry." The man whispers. "Bad rat, get out of there! I told you guys a million times that you are not allowed in the kids rooms."
A big, grey rat shimmies out from under Antonio's bed. The man sits up and the rat jumps on his lap. He is frowning down at it and pokes it in the side. Antonio's curious eyes still go unnoticed.
"No cheese for you for a week, young man."
The rat squeaks sadly and Antonio can't take it anymore.
"Oh, please no! He only wanted my tooth."
The man almost jumps out of his skin. He scrambles backwards, still sitting on the floor, limbs flying everywhere. It looks so funny and Antonio can't help but giggle when the man bumps into the dresser and hits his head on it with a quiet "Ay!"
Mama would scold him for laughing, but Mama is not here.
The man clutches his heart and his breathing sounds ragged. "Dios Mio! Don't do that!"
"Sorry."
The hood is still obscuring the face, but Antonio can't help but think that something about the stranger looks familiar.
"Who are you?"
The man freezes. Mira always praises him for his instincts and empathy. Antonio thinks that the man looks scared.
"I… Uhm…"
The rat squeaks again. It had held on to the ruana during the man's mad backwards scramble and is now climbing onto a narrow shoulder. Antonio looks at it, then at the man, then back at the rat.
"Oh! Are you El Raton Perez's helper?" Mira hadn't said anything about a helper, but who else could the man be?
"Am I… Huh?"
"His helper!" Antonio pulls the tooth out from under his pillow and shows it off. "My tooth fell out. El Raton Perez came to get it."
The man slowly stands up. He hunches in on himself and steps closer to Antonio's bed. Maybe Antonio should feel intimidated by a stranger standing over him in the middle of the night, but the man is so careful, so hesitant. He supports the rat very tenderly while he walks and strokes a single finger over its little head. Something about the man makes Antonio trust him immediately.
"Your first tooth already? Time flies, huh?" He sounds wistful and sad as he stares at the tooth in Antonio's palm. Antonio didn't mean to make him sad.
But then the man seems to shake himself out of his sad mood and puts his hands on his hips. "But uhm, yeah! Exactly. I'm El Raton Perez's little helper. Good job figuring that out, Antonio."
The little boy gasps. "You know my name?"
"Oh well, of course. I.. I am his helper. I need to know our clients."
"But why does he need a helper?"
"He is very small. He can't open doors very well on his own. And someone needs to carry the teeth for him."
"Oh…that makes sense." Antonio holds out his own tooth. "Here!"
The man holds up his hands and shakes his head. "Oh no, I can't."
"But that's why you are here."
"I… darn it." He slaps his own forehead. The hood shifts a little and just for a second Antonio can see green, kind eyes, before nervous hands pull it back down again. "I forgot the candy. Sorry."
Antonio lowers his hand. He is a big boy. He is not gonna cry. "So I get no candy?"
"I'm sure you will. Later? Probably?"
He will not cry, he will not cry, he will not cry.
"Hey hey hey." The man sounds like he is about to cry himself, which makes Antonio feel a bit better about his own childish sniffles. He gingerly sits down on Antonio's bed. For a second it looks like he wants to hug the boy, but then he just hugs himself. "Don't cry, Tonito. You'll get your candy. Just later. How about… how about you hold on to that tooth for now and I… I will tell you a story instead. To tide you over?"
Antonio perks up immediately. He loves stories. Almost as much as candy. "You will?"
"Sure kid. A short one, okay?" Perez's helper wrings his hands and looks towards the door. "Casita, you will warn me if someone-" He shoots Antonio a quick look. "You will warn me when it's time to go, right?"
Casita waves soundlessly with the door.
"Alright. Lay back, Tonito. There, that's good. Have you ever heard the story of the princess and the frog?"
***********************************
Antonio falls asleep to the sound of a rumbling voice talking about adventure and love. Perez's helper is a very good storyteller. He makes different voices and he uses El Raton Perez himself to act out some scenes. He even allows Antonio to pet the rat.
Just before he's completely asleep, Antonio thinks he feels the man pull up the blanket and tuck him in. Just like Mama and Papa always do.
And then he's gone.
****************************
The next morning his tooth is gone and in its place is a piece of candy. It's nice, but the story was even better.
When he tells his Mama and Papa about Perez's helper, the two of them exchange that weird, grown up look they get sometimes, indulgent and amused. They praise his colorful imagination.
"But my tooth is gone. He must have come back later!"
And again that weird, amused, look. Like they know something he doesn't.
He is in a bad mood, because no one will listen to him, until Dolores finds him in the garden and hugs him tight so she can whisper into his ears.
"Perez's Helper is a secret, hermanito. The adults can't know."
"You know about him too?"
"Sure I do. How did you like the story about the princess and the frog? That was always my favorite."
"I loved it!" Antonio cheers. He grows somber really quick though. "I wanted to hear more. Do you think he will tell me another one when I lose my next tooth?"
"Who knows." For some reason, Dolores looks towards Tio Bruno's tower, the one Antonio is not allowed near. "If we are lucky, you won't even have to wait that long for a new story."
Antonio is not quite sure what she means, but he hopes she is right.
He already misses El Raton Perez and his helper.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll probably upload this to ao3 next week. Will let you know when that happens
Encanto Headcanons #7
I got a lot of headcanons to write, man oh man…
Ever since Isabela got her gift, she’s made a new flower for Agustín every morning without fail. When they lost their gifts, she still would go and find flowers for him because she was NOT breaking that tradition.
Mirabel looks like a carbon copy of her mama, but acts e x a c t l y like her abuelo.
Alma begins to notice this as she bonds with Mirabel more and more. She just knows that Pedro would’ve been so proud of Mirabel.
Saw this in an art, but Mirabel started the trend of laying flat on the floor to hug Casita. Everyone does it at least once.
Everybody thinks Bruno is the innocent sibling until he talks massive shit and then everyone just knows.
Pepa and Isabela were biters as a kid. Just, absolutely would bite your arm, leg, or ankle out of pure spite.
Antonio is currently a biter, more of the “out of affection” side of things than his mama and prima; The family gives credits for that to his gift.
Dolores got bitten by Isabela so often as kids that she’s completely unfazed by Antonio.
Dolores’ ears twitch when she picks up on some SPICY gossip.
Luisa will sometimes pick up her sisters and carry them under her arms out of nowhere just because she can. At this point, they don’t even fight it anymore. They could be walking to lunch and she just SWOOPS.
If a minor inconvenience happens to Bruno, he always questions why the universe has forsaken him. This now passed on to Mirabel and Camilo.
Forget an angry Alma. Forget an angry Pepa. Have you experienced an angry Casita? That’s the worst situation to be in.
Morning time? Alarm clock chucked at your head. Lunch time? Chair slid out from under you. Trying to reach something? Yeah it’s at the ceiling now. Simply walking? The floor opens up like a trap door.
Don’t anger a house.
Bruno was Luisa’s #1 guest at her tea parties when she was younger.
Bruno is wrapped around Luisa’s finger. He spoils all his niblings rotten, but Luisa is ESPECIALLY spoiled.
Whenever Luisa needs to relax, tio Bruno is her go-to person.
Isabela is the heaviest sleeper in the house, she straight up sleeps like the dead. You could pour a bucket of water on her and she’s still out for the count.
She has slept through so many of Pepa’s natural disasters-
Dolores is the lightest sleeper, seeing as she barely gets sleep in the first place. It’s a mixture of insomnia and the constant hearing of Camilo’s leaf blower snoring.
Camilo and Pepa both snore loud as hell.
All the grandkids would do sleeping piles with Bruno before he left. Now that he’s back, they do it MORE often (this time with Antonio :D)!
Camilo will act like they’re embarrassed from their Papa’s hugs, but then when Félix passes by them without so much of a side hug, they’ll stare at him and let out the most dramatic “AHEM?!”.
Mirabel and Mariano have BFF necklaces that they wear everyday with the most proud expressions.
Antonio got jealous so they had to make him one too; he also never takes it off.
Félix sometimes refer to Mirabel and Camilo as “Thing 1 and Thing 2” out of affection when they’re up to no good. They’re menaces but they’re his menaces.
Agustín and Mirabel will sometimes sword fight with their brooms when doing chores; just to put a bit more fun into the mix!
Abuela and Antonio have days where they’ll just sit outside and let animals come around them. Antonio chatters away with them while Abuela is most fond of the butterflies.
Anytime someone trips on themselves, pushes a pull door, or does something mildly embarrassing, Dolores is always somehow right there to see it happen.
Antonio carries his stuffed jaguar everywhere he goes in Casita. He doesn’t take it outside because he lost it once and he nearly lost his mind.
Pepa and Bruno starts to develop the need for reading glasses; something that Julieta teases them for since she’s the oldest and still doesn’t need any.
They start giving Agustín specific “Glasses siblings hugs” just to spite her.
When Julieta and Félix are in the kitchen together, that’s about to be a 5 star meal right there.
Mariano reads Pepa his poems to help sooth her on a bad day.
Isabela starts to develop her mama’s overly affectionate tendency. Nobody in the family is safe from it, she’ll sneak attack someone with a hug from behind.
That one Jason Momoa and Henry Cavill meme? Isabela and any of the grandkids.
The triplets are a unit: you compliment one, you compliment them all. You insult one, you insult them all (and most likely get beat up as well).
Bruno made one self-depricating joke and his sisters never looked so offended in their lives. They tackled him down into a cuddle pile and began listing off reasons on why he’s wrong.
When Pepa and Julieta were pregnant with the twins, Dolores would follow them around everywhere out of interest of hearing two heartbeats.
When they wanted to keep the pregnancies a surprise, that day Dolores learned the full power of adorable blackmail.
Camilo will just shift into Agustín and mock him on his clumsiness. Pepa tells him to quit it but Agustín is just impressed at how spot on Camilo is becoming.
Isabela has days where she’s just bothered and needs a hug from her parents. She’ll go up and tap their shoulder, arms open for a hug. Of course they’re more than happy to give her the biggest of hugs.
I heard the new Dolores song “Turn it Down” made by OR3O and best believe I’m on my 20th time of listening to it. That’s all for now!
I heard audio from an Encanto deleted scene about Abuela and tio Bruno’s fallout made my heart break… WATCH THIS ANIMATIC FROM @yes-asil: https://yes-asil.tumblr.com/post/672826849105264640/when-i-heard-the-audio-of-the-deleted-scene-i-knew (support their works!) I relate to him so much. Although I draw Bruno all cutesy and handsome sometimes, I do accept that he is quite a complex character who stands out as the family member who suffers the most out of the Madrigals. He reminds me so much of some of my own family and I head canon that he took up smoking every now and then after the fallout with Abuela.
