we need to talk about Dakota Damascus more.

please. how are we not collectively more insane about this.

theres so much fucking symbolism in the name Damascus - and even just Dakota HAVING a different "real" name

ok. theres a lot here. gonna start with what i first thought of when he brought up that name - damascus steel

damascus steel is beautiful, but the exact art of making it has been lost. it was mostly used in weapons/blades and variants are used in kitchen knives

generally, its made by layering two different kinds of steel thousands of times, which makes this really gorgeous layered swirl pattern:

Dakota is a martial fighter. he kicks. he doesn't even use his hands in combat, much less a weapon.

but why? why would Dakota Damascus not use weaponry?

because Dakota Damascus is dead.

Dakota Damascus died on the roof. Dakota Damascus died when Harlem recruited Dakota Cole to Watch.

damascus steel is lost to time.

and yet, there is a city called Damascus. it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth - somewhere between 4000 and 8000 years old, depending on how you count it. obviously, it's changed a lot in that time, becoming much more modern and no longer producing damascus steel.

the name Damascus lives on. in Aunt Alaska, in the bright red hair Dakota inherited from his mother, in a shy "The last name's Damascus," in a boy that no longer has a mechanical heart.

and, regardless of what Dakota's name is or was, it changed when he fell off that roof. like i was saying before, whoever Dakota was before he fell, before Katori fell, died on that roof, died with that heart, died with Katori.

this kid, who told William that who they were before is dead, that who William was before died on that cliff, regardless of what happened to his body? that who Dakota was before is dead, regardless of his heartbeat? has such a fucking tangible manner of that, in this name, this name that's the same as a lost art.

also, as i was writing this, i had another thought:

Dakota Damascus is... sort of alive. in the same way William is, after receiving the heart. because in that procedure, Dakota partially lost what made him Dakota Cole, what kept him from being Dakota Damascus.

as William Wisp was revived, so too was Dakota Damascus.

theres a lot of other parallels between William's backstory and Dakota's. hell, i think they would have fallen at around the same time, based on the rough timeline i have in my head. they're both dead men walking in their own ways and then ofc there's the heart transplant arc but that's beyond the scope of this post.

god i also just realized theres probably something somewhere about rebirth and damascus steel's layered effect but i cant quite pull the thought together

OH ANOTHER THING that i genuinely forgot to talk about before

ok so i lowkey hc that Dakota is a trans guy (idk why just vibes yknow) and theres definitely another layer somewhere about name changes, changes of the self, symbolism in a different name, a different gender (well not a different gender but I cant find the words im looking for, yknow what i mean), a different self. Dakota didn't have a different first name before, but couldn't he have at some point? perhaps he chose Dakota when he was with Master Cole, left behind a feminine name, a feminine self, left behind Damascus, left everything behind. died. became someone new, reborn.

god i just think Dakota having a different "real" last name is just such a cool fucking concept and i think Damascus was literally the perfect fucking name. even got that Clark Kent/Peter Parker/William Wisp alliteration thing going. fuck yeah.
