Bald Eagles can be found in many places around East Texas - especially near waterways. This one was photographed in Wood County. Did you know? Bald and golden eagles are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, passed by Congress in 1940. The Act prohibits the taking or possession of any bald or golden eagle, alive or dead, including any part, nest, or egg, unless allowed by permit . “Take” includes pursue, shoot, shoot at, poison, wound, kill, capture, trap, collect, molest or disturb. Eagles are also protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which protects more than 800 species of birds in North America. Feathers and parts of all migratory birds are protected and are illegal to possess without a permit. Pictured is the Thruston House in Mount Vernon, Texas. The two-story dogtrot-style home belonged to Col. Henry Clay Thruston who, at seven feet, seven-and-one-half inches tall, was the tallest soldier in the Civil War. The home is on the historic Bankhead Highway, an early transcontinental route from San Diego to Washington DC (1919). Historic Steamboat House at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville, Texas Texas Trivia- In 1858, Rufus W. Bailey built the odd-looking house with twin turrets at the front and galleries on each side. Since it somewhat resembled a riverboat of that era, it acquired the name Steamboat House. Tradition holds that Bailey offered the house as a wedding present to his son, Frank Bailey, but the young man and his bride refused to live there. In late 1862 Sam Houston, having been deposed as governor the previous year rented the Steamboat House and moved his family there from Cedar Point, his farm in Chambers County. Houston lived out the rest of his days in the Steamboat House in Huntsville, where he died on July 26, 1863, and where his funeral was held. Bailey, who died three months before Houston, had willed all his property to his son. Thus Frank Bailey became the owner of the house he had rejected five years earlier. Over the years the house saw multiple owners and by the mid-1930s the Steamboat House had become a "squatters place." The Titus County Courthouse is located in Mount Pleasant - it's the 5th courthouses for the county, but y’all might be surprised to find out that the current courthouse was built in 1895! In 1940 county officials decided that it would be easier to “modernize” the 1895 courthouse than to build a new one, so they removed most of the exterior features and put up the “modern” façade. In the 1960s the courthouse was remodeled again, and this time most of the windows were covered over. The newest remodeling was done in the 1990s when the stucco façade was put up. Some people call the Titus County Courthouse an “ugly duckling story in reverse”.
