Now that Waid’s back at DC are you brave enough to share what it was he said to you about working together on Superman years ago? Always wanted to know. I’d rather see you and Hickman do Superman together, a joint with Waid would inevitably lean too retro for your tastes I suspect.

Hey, look, I still exist! Thank you for reminding me I have a tumblr account.

SO, to be clear: What Mark said was less about Superman specifically and more about working at DC, which at the time I had just signed onto exclusively. Suffice to say that it had to do with somebody who worked there at the time and who no longer works there now.

Anyway, I don’t want to make more of it than it was. Mark just made a funny comment when we were talking about working together again on something more substantial. We’ve traded e-mails over the years and I finally just met him in person this past fall but we’ve never talked any further about what we might do beyond shrugging at each other and muttering “Superman?”. I don’t know! I get the feeling that Mark’s another one of those guys that gets slapped with the retro rap simply because he’s working with a lot of these characters that have been around for 50-60 years. I’m sure if we were going to do something we could find a way to make it feel a little fresher than all that.

And I like Jonathan too! I haven’t seen him in a while but I’m curious about the Ultimate Spider-Man book that just dropped. It’s on my never-ending Gotta Read list.

Anyway- I’ll try to remember that tumblr exists more often. These popping up in my email certainly helps, thanks for the question!

Hi there! Did you do an end-of-year Holiday drawing for 2021? I don't remember seeing one.

Nope! I roughed one out last fall but to be honest I was never quite happy with the premise for it and never had a chance to go back and refine it. This was a tougher one than usual as I covered a good deal more ground in the DC universe last year than I had before. Ultimately I decided that I'll leave it on my desktop and see if I can do it as the year goes.

It's a tradition I have a lot of fun with but I do need to be cognizant of the fact that I've got work to do, haha.

Just Photoshop! I'm open to the idea of using other programs but I'm waiting for when I have a decent break* to try them out.

Nothing yet! To be honest I've had a hard time tracking what exactly Jon's costume is right now, but the last time I had to draw it for work was during Bendis' Legion of Superheroes. Even that was just from the collar up. If it ever comes up at work I might give it some more thought but I'm sure John Timms and company have a handle on it at the moment. Thanks for the kind words!

Could Superman beat Goku

I mean it's me so I'm going to say Superman. I've seen maybe three whole episodes of Dragonball back when I was a kid. I've actually thought recently that I'd like to figure out where to start reading some Dragonball but haven't done so yet. I absolutely think Goku could probably give Superman a run for his money but...it's me. Superman takes it.

May I please ask what you would most like to draw if you were asked to illustrate some person or incident from History, rather than Fiction?

Ooooo, GREAT question. My gut instinct was a sports book, something from baseball or hockey. I'd love to do a book on any one of my favorite musicians, but I feel like Dave Chisholm's gonna get to them all before I could and do a much better job.

I'm fascinated by NASA as a person with very little background in science, and wouldn't even know a specific person or incident I'd want to do something with there, but that might be something.

I'll stop there for the moment or this will just turn into me rambling, but this was a great question and I'll keep thinking on it. Thanks!

I'm a different anon and I hope I don't bother you with this but... apparently you also said before that you weren't interested in drawing Shazam anymore. What changed your mind? Or was it just Billy that you didn't want to draw anymore?

I don't mind at all! And this is an easy one, what changed my mind was-

-MARY.

I don't know if I said that I wasn't interested in drawing Shazam! ever again (I might've, my memory for this stuff is terrible). I know that my feeling was and is that I'd gotten to do the idealized version of the classic Marvel Family in a way that I was really happy with, and with one of my best friends in this silly business. As far as that version of these characters goes, I'm all set.

With that in mind I'd said a while back that I really think Mary deserved a shot at being the lead in a Shazam! book, and were such a thing ever to happen, that was the one way I'd consider returning to this corner of DC Comics. And go figure, the opportunity came just as I was finishing Strange Adventures.

It's got nothing to do with Billy, for as much as I kid about dumping him in a volcano if everybody keeps asking where he is. If it isn't completely obvious, I think the world of Billy Batson/Captain Marvel. He's one of my favorite comic book characters of all time. And if somebody comes along to me with the right idea for a new book featuring him I'd certainly be open to it. I took this gig because I loved the idea of jumping back into this world after Strange Adventures and before I move onto some other things, and doing so with Mary, who I think more than deserves this kind of push. Hell, same goes for Freddy hereafter.

if you could have any scene from the strange adventures run be turned into a lego set, what scene would you choose

Been thinking about this for months. My knee-jerk choice was issue #3's gladiator fight with the Hellotaat warrior. But after some thought I think the Undergrounders' throne room would be fun.

Though mostly I just want figures for all of Adam's costumes.
