Flash Fic Friday #3
Another part of that fic I mentioned once. Connected with this one. This part I wrote this morning after my exam and after I heard some clock app sound with the dialogue. I knew instantly who would say it and who it would be said to. @nortaeventcouncil. It's kinda all the prompts smashed together? A lil bit of this and lil bit of that. đ€·đŒââïž
It was cold, bitter and biting cold. Normally, he would hate it, and would have taken precautions to make sure he stayed warmer. Doing that meant taking one of Calâs jackets though, and he was not about to do that. He was not about to wear something that smelled like him or even remotely reminded him of his brother.
Blowing warm air into his cold hands, he stared out across the little space around the cabin. It was tucked away safely in this place that he refused to call majestic. No matter that it had taken his breath away when he had stood on the jetway and seen those mountains dusted with snow and cutting the bluest sky he had ever seen to ribbons. He refused to admit that he liked it here and that the peace and quiet had settled over him, leaving him feeling oddly stifled and quiet.
The porch door creaked and then slammed shut. He twisted his lips, deciding that as long as he kept his back to the door that neither of them would bother him. Maybe they would just see he wasnât doing anything but sitting and staring out at the trees that were slowly growing nightmarish shadows as the sun dipped behind the mountain range.
The steps that approached him sounded more like someone hopping from one foot to the other, and it was a little body that dropped down onto the step next to him. He observed her out of the corner of his eye, already shying away as she started to swing her little booted feet so the heels struck the wood in an off-kilter rhythm.
He didnât hate children. This one though, he wanted to hate her with a earnest that sometimes made him wonder how he couldnât.
She watched the trees with him, not speaking. She was quiet, Maven had learned that about her very quickly. Sh observed everything around her, and she had observing him more than he would like. He knew Mare had told her to stay away, to never speak to him. He had seen the way those little pink lips had twisted, and how her eyes had sparked in such a familiar way after that warning, and deep down had known she would eventually find a way to go behind her motherâs back. He knew why he believed that, but he refused to admit it. It meant thinking about the past, about growing up, and his brother. Who conveniently had to go back to the city early yesterday to handle something. He was surprised Mare had let him go, given it meant she would be alone to deal with him and watch the child next to him.
Slowly he unfurled from his crunched state as she continued to sit and not speak but just kick her feet. He blew more warm air into his hands before glancing at her out of the corner of his eye. Her boots werenât tied, and her brightly colored blue jacket wasnât zipped, but she was at least wearing proper pants. He didnât care. He told himself he didnât care if she was cold. He was a Burner, and he had a feeling she was too. He had overheard Mare and Cal talking about it quietly one night while they carried her to bed. She wasn't showing signs yet though. So while it was freezing, it was this ridiculous child's decision to sit out here with him.
âShe always looks at you like sheâs mad.â
He froze, his blood going cold at the sound of her voice. Slowly he glanced down at her. Her little lips were pursed tightly and her brows were scrunched tightly together. She wrinkled her damn nose the same was he used to. He snapped his head forward again, ignoring her completely.
âDoes everyone look at you like that?â The direction of her voice had changed. It wasnât forward anymore, it was directly at him. He tried to avoid looking at her. He always avoided looking directly at her. He didnât like being hurt, he didnât like it when he did things that made him ache, but he also had come to realize over the course of his life that he had a hard time avoid it. This time was no different. He looked down at her.
His heart stuttered and his body heated unintentionally as she set those uncanny fucking eyes on him. Fucking Irisâs gods. They had given her Calâs eyes. Those were his eyes, with the same earnest need to understand with the intetion to aid, to mend, and to heal. He wanted to claw them out of her head, wanted to remove them forever. Cal had always looked at him with those eyes, and it had always reminded him of the sucking, gaping hole in his heart and head where his love for his brother used to be.
She had his hair, his eyes, and she had that sweet face that he had faint memories of from when he used to run after Cal though the hall of Whitestone. Before Cal had gone to the front, before he had come back a yonng man and not a child anymore. Before his mother had ripped any connection to Cal out of him by the root and stem.
But she was not him, even though the first time he had seen her he had almost mistaken her for him in a strange flash of dĂ©jĂ vu. She had peeked around the doorway as Mare had paced in front of him, setting the boundaries that he had thought were laughable. Now he wished she had set more, wished she had left her daughter with her parents in the city. He wished that this girl had not been born, that she didnât exist. But she did, and in his deepest heart⊠he didnât hate that. It meant--he didn't want to admit to it. Twisting his lips, he finally let the words form, but not leave him. It meant he had subverted his mother's meddling, and had found a way to love his brother again. Even if it was just loving the strange mirage of him that his daughter was.
It took longer than he liked to put himself together just enough and put the mask back in place and shrug as if that question was inconsequential.
She continued to watch him, even though he had started to turn away from her.
He felt the moment she slipped her little hand in his. It was warm, warmer than he thought it would be. Maybe she was a Burner after all.
His entire body locked, and he whipped his head over his shoulder, wondering why Irisâs gods had not send Mare out here yet. He didn't smell ozone, or hear the tell tale crackle of lightening waiting to scorch through him.
âIâm not mad at you.â She said, leaning toward him as if she could push those words though his cold exterior and embed them in his heart. His throat locked up against his will, and he had to take a short, shallow breath and swallow multiple times. It wouldnât dislodge. If he looked at her, he knew he would not see her. He would see his brother, he would see the Harbor Bay room. He would see that look that Cal had given him over his shoulder before slipping out. So he continued to stare out at the advancing shadows, keeping his eyes on the tree line, but he didnât let go of her hand either.

RQ Week 2 Flash Fic Friday
... a scene taken from a series of scenes for a fic I wil probably never write.... Bonswa my loves, I have returned (: @nortaeventcouncil. For RQ flash fic fridays (prompt 1 secrets)
âWould you have given them to me?â
Mare glanced up at him with wary eyes, hearing the way his voice betrayed the nonchalance with which he asked his question. Somehow, she knew he would ask her at some point. It had really just been a matter of when for weeks now. Being at the cabin always seemed to loosen lips, and now was no different. The last thing she wants to do was open this can with him though. She had already suffered his presence from the moment it arrived, and all she wanted to do was stay in the tranquility of this moment for as long as she could.
           âGiven you what?â
His cheek twitched at her avoidance, but his eyes softened at the edges. Glancing away, he stared out the frosted window at the viciously falling snow. On the back of the plush chair, his fingers curled into claws on the blanket draped there. The storm had come violently midday and had stayed well into the night. Travel was impossible, leaving was impossible. She felt like a fish trapped in a tank with a shark.
           âWould you have⊠given me children?â
Mareâs hand stilled on Corianeâs curls, and she had to forcibly keep herself from possessively wrapping an arm around her to pull her closer. The question wasnât directed at Coriane at all, but something about the idea of it made Mareâs hackles rise. He hadnât made any overt threats toward Coriane yet, at least none that Mare knew of. Maybe her threat had worked that first night, or maybe he had been telling the truth when he told he that he had nothing against her daughter. Given the past, the former had to be true.
Slowly she returned to stroking Corianeâs damp hair, and considered her as she did so. Fresh from a warm bath, she dozed peacefully. The firelight bathed her in orange and red; the perfect colors for her palette. For half a second, she imagined her with different features, the more angular ones that used to haunt every one of Mareâs nightmares. She imagined her with blue eyes instead of mellow amber. Something in her stomach clenched tightly at the fact that she could not picture her daughter laughing with those blue eyes. She swallowed subtly before saying the only thing she could.
âThey never would have been ours. They would have been your motherâs.â
His exhales whistles through his teeth, telling her she hit the nerve that has always made him curl in on himself.
           âThatâs not true.â
âLook at me and say that. Look at me and tell me that you really think I would have been allowed to raise them, that she would have let me.â She stared him down across the space, her hand stilling on Coraineâs head again before slowly guiding her closer. She wouldnât be able to fit in her lap much longer, but it was the only way Mare felt like she could keep her close right this second. Â
He raised his chin at her, those icy blue eyes practically glowing in the low light of the dying fire. His cheek twitched again, and he curled his fingers into a tighter ball on the blanket.
âI would have made her stay away from them.â
Mare couldnât help but laugh. The movement and sound made Coriane shift, and curl tighter against her. Cutting the sound off harshly to avoid waking her, Mare shook her head in exasperation. The least he could have done was say something believable. âYou would have tried,â she admitted quietly, when Coriane had sighed and relaxed again. âAnd you would have failed.â
His entire being went still as stone, and Mare felt the undulating waves of heat he tried to contain wash over her as softly as the waves on the lake shore. She watched him tear his eyes away from her, and gnaw on the inside of his cheek for a moment. The odd kinetic stillness she remembered settled over him as he began to tap a finger against his knee. Slowly he molded himself back into the blasé image he had been maintaining up until this conversation.
âYou think I wouldnât have loved them.â
There wasnât a hint of a question in his words, and Mare pursed her lips at the accusation. A part of her wanted to keep twisting the knife deeper, to inflict the pain she had always been able to with him. The other part, the one that had grown out of the bitter, resentful girl she had been stayed the blow, and ultimately won out.
âI think, she wouldnât have let you love them. Or me.â She added the last part quietly, but it still struck home like a blow.
His finger started tapping again, and even in the low light she could see the nail was bit to the quick. The others were probably no better, so she didnât bother looking at them. Before it had been easy to just remember the man who had been on the other side of cell bars taunting her and pulling at old wounds. It had been easy to remember the manic energy in his eyes when she had chased him down in Whitefire. Potentially facing the young man he had been underneath all that made her shiver. Her eyes slowly fell, and she dropped her voice to a whisper as she said, âThere are no more secrets, not anymore.â
âNo more secrets.â He echoed the words mockingly under his breath before rising and slipping back into the shadows of the house. The fire popped loudly in the grate, the only residue of his emotions, while the wind howled outside and thunder rumbled faintly.

Now in full length here on tumblr, enjoy!!
February 2nd - Happy Birthday, Shade Barrow!!
A/N 1: The deeper I thought about writing more Imagine Shade Was Still Alive stories, I realized I had to confront a certain aspect that soon revolved a specific image (guess which). This alternate concept takes place roundabout the Kingâs Cage chapters 16/17 (stress on alternate â I picked a date here but I can only assume when exactly it was in KC so the changes make it happen right then đ).
Now in full length here on tumblr!!
Find this on Wattpad
Hidden Intentions
This door posed no resistance. Voices drifted through and became louder as Shade jumped inside, cleaving to the corner of the room as he counted three persons sitting on a bed crammed into an office.
â⊠Youâre sure this works? Itâs not too demanding?â
âIt was your idea to ask, I just saw to it!â A helpless laugh escaped her throat and Shade startled as he recognized his sister. Before her brown eyes found him, the third touched her hand, winning her attention.
âIâve checked the supplies myself, we can do it,â the third, Cameron, agreed. She smiled at his sister who, despite smiling back, looked up just enough to notice him.
Their gazes locked, freezing them both yet likely for very different reasons.
Shade sank into her eyes, wanted to. To see her safe, to see her at all, and, for the fragment of a heartbeat, to imagine Gisaâs eyes, so similar, were those of Mare who had been a hostage for three months now.
âWhat are you doing here âŠ?â Gisa whispered and truth be told, he couldâve asked her the same. But no one replied as Gisa started to giggle like a fool, a habit that felt so awfully normal like home that it hurt.
Everyone was blushing as his entry became obvious to the other two, also the first speaker, who finally turned her head over her shoulder, not the least bit surprised to see him. âThatâs inaccurate,â Diana said. âThe real question is, what took him so long?â She smirked at him yet despite her amused tone, worry showed in her frown that Gisa and Cameron couldnât see from this angle.
An angle, he couldnât help noticing, becoming her marvellously with the way her chin-long curls framed her cheek. No, he wasnât beyond being left speechless by her beauty when she glowed like this. He had no idea how long the awkward silence lasted until he snapped out of it and stepped over, resting his hand on Dianaâs shoulder before she rose and went to him.
After quickly exchanging glances, strangely nervous, Cameron and Gisa jumped up, shoving together the papers on the bed. Diana slammed shut the folder and Gisa hugged him.
âIâm glad to see youâ, he told her quietly although he still didnât know what she did here in the Rocasta base, so near to military operations.
âSo am I,â Gisa replied, released him and left, taking Cameron by the hand.
âWhat was going on here?â he asked as he dropped behind Diana on the bed, unstrapping his boots.
âClassified information,â she answered but he heard â she couldnât hide it from her tone, he knew her well enough now â that she wasnât all business. He snorted, done with the shoes, and inched closer until their legs met and his chest was to her back.
She sighed, but his digging she mustâve expected didnât come. Indeed, he didnât care, not right now. What he wanted was just this, leaning on her, his face on her neck breathing in her scent. His arms embraced her from behind, hands resting on her five-months-belly. An instance of grounding, only strengthened by the tiniest flutter he could feel of their baby.
He longed to forget his shame by holding his world in his arms. This part at least.
Diana weaved his fingers with his, her posture shifting ever so slightly until he couldnât say who leaned on who.
âI really wondered what took you so long, you were expected back half a day earlier,â she said eventually.
He hmphed. âNot unusually late.â
âYouâre so quiet.â
âClassified information,â he murmured. She stirred while he hugged her closer.
âMaybe better this way,â she said. She must be rolling her eyes. âThat I donât give you orders anymore.â But her pulse was quickening against his cheek. Heâd been sent on missions she wasnât responsible for, true, and it left her scared for him despite everything.
He understood that well enough, his own worry for her currently quelled knowing she held back due to her pregnancy. Still, her reaction flustered him when, ironically, she was wrong in this specific case.
âYou neednât have worried, Dee,â he said, and she released a relieved breath, likely thinking of a relatively harmless operation.
Well, it had been, and he yearned to leave it at that, to stay a few minutes longer in this intimate cocoon.
He doubted he had the right to make a wish right now, when heâd already chosen safety.
Just one more second, one kiss on the bare part of her shoulder, and he broke the embrace, sinking on the floor to his knees to face her.
He met her eyes, then lowered his gaze, gathering himself once more. His fingers playing with a loose curl of hers. Looking up, he confessed. âI strayed from orders.â
She raised her eyebrows. âNow thatâs nothing new but it doesnât sound â â
âSafe? It was completely, utterly reckless. I could only hope not to be too stupid.
âBecause I aimed to free Mare.â
The Scarlet Guard used Shade as backup for escapes sparingly, regarding the limits to people he could bring with him. When he wasnât assisting in the taking of Corvium, his new handler Blake sent him on reconnaissance missions. Shade kept waiting for assassination orders though they never came â so far. Due to his ability, it tended to be spotty work, often including theft and sabotage rather than infiltration. Between jobs, that left him chances to see Diana who planned altogether different operations. Growing enmeshed with Command as she was, who knew how far she was aware how he was tied into the greater picture.
Unlike during their first cooperations, Diana appeared fine with it now, him under anotherâs orders. He felt less so and as Blake had Shade follow the front movements and searching Corvium for weak spots, heâd been itching to approach the royal progress. It happened that he was to visit the same locations â afterwards, to listen for whispers of treason against King Maven. Bitterness filled Shade as he was close but carefully kept away from Mare, who was always on the screens beside her captor.
Shade had believed it reasonable. Heâd seen the brutal results of Nannyâs infiltration. Heâd stayed behind during the failed pro-Cal coup. But while the banished prince was reined in, heâd helped the Guard win Corvium, cheered with them as Cameronâs brother Morrey was freed even as everyone chewed at still seeing Mare as the kingâs trophy and mouthpiece.
When he received the orders three days ago, Shade had had enough of waiting and playing safe. He had this ability that had proved so useful, had saved his loved onesâ lives so many times, he had a duty to Mare to at least try.
Would she not expect him to try?
He would grind his teeth no longer and enter the royal party. The opportunity sounded almost a ploy, find out who the king was meeting at the Choke, implying that Shade would evade Maven and come from the other side.
This time, he picked the confrontation.
âIâve learned to master standing around silver residences without notice. Even before I stole a sentinel uniform, no one took issue with me. It was almost too easy, eavesdropping for the official mission in the meantime. I only had to teleport when no one would wonder at sudden appear â or disappearances. Everyone knew where the royal party was staying, and this residence had little difference to others, and they love to gossip about Mare. It hurt to hear, but I neednât care when Iâd succeed, right?
âSecurity increased the closer I got but I still came through in the disguise. And then I knew. I didnât see the door, I felt it. The wall of silence beyond the door.
âI was hit by it just by starting to teleport. I never ⊠It happens in a blink, usually. There, I noted how every bit of me would materialize and I wasnât sure if Iâd be just slow or appear in bits. What I knew was that it was impossible to bring Mare with me. Sheâs shackled in silent stone! No idea how they manage it. How she endures. I âŠâ But he had no words for the thought. It expressed itself as a sob he tried to swallow.
Diana never let go of his hand as he told her â his dominant left clasped by both of hers. It didnât help either of them to keep from shaking.
âI just stopped. Stood there, about to get caught after all, calculating if there wasnât a way, any way.â He shook his head.
Dianaâs hold grew tighter. âYou were alone. You couldnât have expected âŠâ
Shade faced her and she mustâve grasped his meaning in his eyes as she startled. She still didnât let go, like a buoy. He straightened. âSo I left. Ran away. Jumped out of their base and barely hid my disguise on my way back here.â
She shifted closer, face inches above his. âItâs as you shouldâve done. Shade. The only thing you could.â She swallowed. âYou gathered intel and retreated before you were trapped and arrested. To know how Mare is kept ââ
He pulled his hand away. âDonât talk about this like such an officer.â She blinked. âI know that. Iâve tried to explain it to myself the whole last day. And I havenât felt a drop less guilty for it.â
âYou âŠâ Diana moved to hug him and he prevented her by cupping her cheeks.
This moment, he needed his gaze to hold on to her eyes. âI didnât think practical,â he whispered. âI went, selfishly, out of desire, and ended it for it as well. It was pure need to survive. For you. I couldnât bear the risk of not coming back to you, leaving our child behind. Not even for Mare.â
Diana slid off the bed, hugging him as she sank to sit on his knees. A sob escaped his throat.
âThere was no chance,â she reminded him.
He closed his eyes, resting his head in her chest. âYou said you wouldnât pick â us or the cause. You say youâll do both, both is important. With only one absolute â keep our baby alive. But I did. Choose. I picked us over Mare.â Tears wetted her sweater. âItâs my shame and yet I donât regret it.â
Her hands rubbed his back, through his hair. âWeâll do better. I promise you, weâll do better and free her.â
Her words were a lifeline, a tether that did little to diminish the raging waves of his heartbeat. âYou hate promises,â he said.
Diana snorted faintly. âIâve kept working on it.â She kissed his temple. âYou donât know all progress we make. Mare is fighting, and weâll come from the other front.â
He woke to the smell of coffee. Its vitalizing odour filled his nose, steam warming his face as he opened his eyes.
Diana smiled at him, already unfairly groomed. She stroked his arm. âA drink to get you up, but breakfast waits in the mess hall.â The corners of her mouth dropped. âDid you even eat last evening?â
Shade struggled to find his limbs to rose and sip the coffee. Theyâd stayed cuddled last night, barely managing to undress before he fell asleep. He shook his head, exhaustion clinging to every part of his body, eyes sore from crying. Tentatively, he tested the first swallows of the brew. âI had a bite. When I was debriefed.â
Diana patted his leg. ïżœïżœïżœYou still had something to report?â
âEnough. The ones around ... well, they know enough.â
She narrowed her eyes. âWhat?â
He downed the rest of the mug. âI thought we professionals keep quiet?â He made light of it but no grin entered his face. âWhatâs the plan for today?â
She sat down next to him and put an arm around his waist, looking at him inquiringly. âWork out. A meeting. Supply chain check, finances, the usual. But fresh up first, then breakfast.â
They held hands on the way to the mess hall and after a shower, Shade felt almost alive. Yet he was glad of Dianaâs pampering and idle conversation.
âGisa has applied to the guard a while ago, with your brothers,â she explained when he asked. âOnly the support we task minors with and ⊠it was chance she was called to Rocasta while we are here, too. Yes.â
âHm. I donât like it still. Canât you make an exception and put in a word about what she does?â
Diana drew in a breath.
He sighed. âOkay, okay, spare me the lecture.â
âA bit protective, are we?â
He squeezed her hand, glancing at her. âIncreasingly.â
She bumped his shoulder. âShe gets along with Cameron really well. They met before weâve freed Cameronâs brother and they feel similarly, apparently. Being the same age and with a sibling as hostage.â
âJust âfeeling similarlyâ?â he teased.
She grinned. Maybe more than that.â
âI really didnât notice.â He shook his head. âI overlooked her, with all other things.â
âWe have a lot to shoulder.â Having reached the mess hall, she turned to him. Her other hand splayed on her belly, the first time since he returned. She mustâve refrained to absent-minded touches until now, to focus on him. That was hard for her, he knew. She already loved the baby so much, the mere anticipation shaped her into a new, lighter-hearted person, a hidden aspect of her he hadnât been aware of.
Himself, he wasnât so sure. Her excitement carried him along, his love for her had him follow her everywhere. The thought of letting her down pained him. He didnât know what to expect while he also couldnât wait to meet their child and he felt an undeniable duty to them, yet the shape of this duty remained beyond his grasp.
âDonât you want to go in?â he said, glancing to the mess hall.
Again, she looked at him in this strange way of this morning and sighed. âAre you ... ready for the world?â
He cackled, clasping the door handle. âWhat else is there?â He stepped over the threshold, even as Diana stood still for an eyeblink.
âWait ââ
âHAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHADE!!â
He stumbled at the loud cheer, his hand going to his heart in exasperation. He almost fell against Diana whoâd sidled close again. Gladly, he leaned against her as he calmed himself, assessing the congregation.
The party.
Everyone was there, or so it seemed at least. Gisa, Cameron and her brother Morrey, his brothers â even his parents! People he knew from the Notch and other comrades heâd recently worked with. Some werenât there, of course, like Kilorn and Cal, but he saw Sara and Julian and even Dianaâs father, skulking around ⊠that dick. Maybe Diana was gracious he tried but Shade couldnât stand the way the colonel was so clearly uncomfortable behaving like, well, family, and Shade hated how that had hurt Diana over the years and she didnât dare addressing that openly.
Diana clutched his arm, whispering into his ear. âIâm sorry, I decided to tell you just a moment too late âŠâ He nodded, helplessly. âI thought you were aware, of the date, and just didnât make a big thing of it âŠâ
His disbelieving gaze wandered from the assembly to the filled tables, back to Diana.
âI âŠâ Indeed, he had been aware of his birthday on February 2nd, not expecting anything of it. He wasnât certain Diana would remember the timing or prepare anything, regarding the one or two times theyâd mentioned birthdays ⊠but it was him whoâd forgotten about what day it was entirely the moment heâd stood before Mareâs gilded prison door and panicked.
He was relieved Cal wasnât there, right now. To look at him, after what Shade and attempted and failed at, knowing that Cal wanted the same â he needed time to process that.
Shade straightened, borrowing posture from the steel in Dianaâs eyes. Then he cupped her face and kissed her, hard.
The others clapped.
Letting go, swallowing a laugh caused by the silly clapping, he cleared his throat and spread his arms, doing his best of playing the role of the stunned and grateful birthday kid.
Glossing over them staring at him expectantly for likely minutes now. âWhat have you bleeding done here!â he exclaimed. âThank you so much!â Already, they rushed to hug or shake hands to congratulate him and he swam into the flood. It was easy to do, go with the flow to drown the shame heâd arrived in. Shade excelled at pretending and blending in and today, they deserved a happy reaction. And he wanted to, to enjoy friends, family, and comrades. They had gathered here, bringing and preparing all that wonderful food he just about realized he was starving for.
The mess hall looked like a silver bakery in Harbor Bay, tables laden various warm breads, all different shapes, sizes and toppings, a spread of meat and cheese slices, eggs, cakes and puddings. The first bite of dark bread with grated carrots, still soft, fresh from the oven, warmed his entire self. The guests recommended snacks and he followed the advice gladly. Cakes fluffy like clouds, excitingly crunchy or tasteful compounds of nuts and fruits, he took every bite as he fell into the chatter and remembered theyâd all come despite knowing Mare wasnât there.
Could they not celebrate despite her captivity?
Could Shade deny them this?
His father, the last one heâd expected to meet here, told him how Sara was looking at replacing his leg and improving his lungs and Shade didnât want to stop embracing him as his father commented on the frontlines.
Bree teased him that heâd barely escaped becoming a teen dad, now that he was twenty, and Tramy embellished an adventure about procuring the food and preventing a disaster when making the cakes with Gisa, Cameron and Morrey. It sounded so similar to chaotic past birthdays, at home, in the Stilts, where one midnight after the party, Shade asked Kilorn to practise kissing as a present and Kilorn complied.
Julian tapped his shoulder and offered him fried apple rings in dough, and, self-deprecating as Julian could be, confessed he put in extra efforts because it was his birthday, too, and they shared hilarious mirrored congratulations.
The colonel told him his first name was Willis and Shade made himself say it.
The talking and feasting went on until his mouth strained and, looking for his mother, he finally found Diana again, sitting next to her. His mother, smiling like the sun, hugged him tight and yet it was she alone who openly bore that heavy sadness in her eyes that Shade was only hiding. He didnât have to pretend with her. Yet she also understood the meaning of celebrating right now.
In the end, as the congregation shushed them away to clean up, Diana rose and cupped his cheek. âDo you forgive me?â she asked.
He blinked. âDidnât I show you?â he countered, and kissed her again, softer but longer. Their brows rested against each other. Both of them the same height â with Diana slightly taller â, it felt so clear how equally matched they were and with the arms around each other, they started sway as if there were music to dance to.
âThe next time â ,â he began, â â when is your birthday again?â
Diana groaned, chewing her lip. âIn May ⊠you know, the due date âŠâ
He grinned. âYouâre still embarrassed about that?â
She gasped, slapping his chest. âYou remembered all along!â
He grabbed that hand that bumped him, rising it to his lips to kiss. âNo one knows if itâll be the same day for real, calm down.â His smile faded. âBut I want one thing to be certain.â She found his eyes, questioningly. âTo have Mare at the next party.â
âShe will be,â Diana confirmed once more but apparently less convinced than last night.
Shade nodded, his gaze striving away. Maybe they didnât need assurance, and hope had to be enough.
After today, he thought he could start with that.
A/N 2: CAMISA SHOULDâVE HAPPENED
For a long time, I was a bit uninspired for Shadeâs birthday post this year until I had an idea this Sunday morning. Itâs weird, it feels like I teleported into Fadeland since I have created this in five days after I spent almost eight joyful months in Fadeland last time, happily procrastinating! ^^° I will continue the Shade/Farley birthday posts at least until next year for the 10 year Red Queen jubilee.
However, I have to apologize:
For excluding Cal, Iâm so sorry for those who hoped for him but just considering to include him in the party is so awkward. Having Shade look into his Calâs puppy eyes wishing his brother(-in-law) happy birthday while he must be thinking about how everyone chided Cal for impulsively making Mare a priority in risky operations with Shade then doing the same to utterly fail and be comforted by his very present pregnant girlfriend â the party wouldâve crashed right then (or Shade wouldâve filled his mouth with food and just replied with a âhm, thanksâ). But Shade will confess this to him later on and theyâll have a deep bonding talk about Mare and love and siblings!
For the off-handed mention of Shade kissing Kilorn â Iâve considered both Farley and Shade as bi for years but never grasped the chance to state this for Shade (maybe in my Calorn AU, a little) and thought today, now or never, even though it became just a tiny bit. I hope to do better in future, should not another writing block or technical problem happen.
My inner bread snob jumped out, sorry not sorry. I thought about how often â usually girls â can describe delicious food in books only to not to eat it in the end and while itâs a man here, I wanted to say fuck that, go binge
Theyâre so angstily dramatic
I hope you enjoyed, and once again:
