Five years ago, 22-year-old Saeed Reza became a paraplegic when chronic back pain—caused by years of strenuous work as a day labourer—eventually rendered him lame from the waist down. After receiving treatment at the International Committee for the Red Cross' orthopaedic centre in Kabul and slowly regaining some independence, ICRC offered Reza a small business loan. He decided to learnt tailoring and established a hole-in-wall business near his home in Dasht-e-Barchi, in western Kabul. He's now the sole breadwinner for his widowed mother and two young brothers. Reza has recently taken on an apprentice, 30-year-old Mohammad Ali, who, after suffering from Tuberculosis is also a paraplegic. Two of the many women that climbed a kilometre up a steep hill in the far southern outskirts of Kabul to mourn at the mass grave dug for more than 20 of the 80 killed in a suicide bombing three weeks ago. The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility that targeted a peaceful demonstration against the proposed route of a power project, which ethnic Hazaras in central Afghanistan would have benefited from had it not been re-routed further east. Another from my daily photo journal live on the @sbs_australia website linked in my personal profile. This from two days ago on a bridge that spans the Kabul river close to the centre of the capital. Half a dozen salesmen balanced what looked like crucifixes on the road, each with 40 or 50 colourful scarves hanging from nails in the crossbar. I needed a new one after all my others had finally disappeared and picked out a grey one with black pin-stripes for less than USD2.
