Context is a concept not talked about enough in writing. It truly is something that can turn a line from mediocre to downright masterful.
Think about your favourite line from a passage of writing. Now apply it to a completely different context. It completely alters the emotional impact of the line, right?
There's been so many times someone has quoted a line from a book I've never read and I wonder how it could possibly impact a reader that much. Then I read it and I get that Oh moment.
Writing is all about building a connection with the reader and creating a world that elicits the most optimal emotional responses from them to keep them drawn in!
So!! Next time you spontaneously think up a one-liner and can't think of what writing of yours to insert it in - think of how it can fit into different contexts. Then, choose the most hard-hitting one and drabble from there!!
This is a tip that's helped me turn a hundred unfinished drabbles into a hundred finished passages & stories that I'm proud of.
-Sincerely from, a chronic one-liner writer <3

The Silven Creek cut through the soft earth like a knife. Its water flowed freely as if it were hot blood running out of pulsing veins.
Regulus observed the water closely, viewing it as if it were something alive, fragile with a heartbeat. The almost indisputable waves flowed like a graceful dancer who was moved by an external force.
They trickled down-stream, tumbling over rocks spread across the bottom of the lake. Alike to an experienced dancer, the body of water didn’t need steps laid out in front of it, it was moved by the force of nature and invisible passion. Prey to the wind, swaying with the soft breeze, afternoon light glittered off of the silent crests of movement.
His mind, like the creek, could run endlessly and still find new ideas to dive into.

This time he’s going to do it; the final push.
Yes, he’s aware that this is a tad dramatic. And yes, he knows that Sirius would either laugh hysterically at him for doing this, or scold him relentlessly, but he simply does not care. Regulus is past caring. He hasn’t cared about anything since James left.
So, he paces on the rocks, sending a furtive glance down to the crashing waves climbing up the cliffside.
The water is furious today. It’s battling with the raging winds slapping it around; waves high and dangerous. It could pull anything under its deadly blanket, send it under, and drag it down to the very bottom.
Regulus tells himself that this is good. If anything was going to send a sign to James or any of the Potter’s to come back and save him, this is it; deadly waves and a death wish to jump in.
Either he’ll die, or James will come back to him.
Both of these options sound perfect in Regulus’ mind.

The rush of secrecy is burning into ash. Its energy was once electrifying, but as it crackles, it pops. The potion of privacy drains to dregs, and I don’t want to sip it anymore.
I’m full of it.
Concealment becomes isolation, and god, I’ve never felt so sheltered in my life. It’s suffocating, a cave crumbling inwards, and I’m choking on the gas. Please run to me, like you haven’t done this entire time. Please save me, like I’ve been begging for this entire time.
Once the risk of exposure was fuel, but now it’s all wasted potential. We’re a car running on nothing but pure determination. You don’t want this how it is, and I never dreamed of it going this far.

people put too much regulations on happiness. they think everything holds a specified weight to whether it should make someone happy.
most don’t realise that humanity is inconsistent. they think they can confine every single person into suffocating cages.
and we buy into it.
we condition ourselves into thinking claustrophobia is synonymous with humanity.
but, i find happiness in the places where it ‘shouldn’t’ be. i think that it just peeks through the cracks of my brain.

the outside of life; untouchable matrix where i watch.
eternally i linger the void of outskirts, consuming, never consumed. my face just outside of every picture, body blurred and unscathed.
to be gorgeous, you have to first be seen. but, why would i want to be seen? the word is synonymous with hunted.
iris with blown out pupils: i’m fine in my shell of a mind. eyes bright, out of reach from the barrel of the gun.
look at me, looking at you. i’ll never be anywhere but by the side of the limelight. a sidekick, invisible.
consuming, never consumed; life can be so still.

How to express tenderness towards yourself
treat mundane activities like grocery shopping as adventures
make playlists for every feeling you can feel
give yourself quiet days to read and pass time slowly
keep a journal, a nonperfomative place to express yourself
reduce your screen time; use your screens mostly for inspiration
create more than you consume
have a place where you can run free and feel the wind rushing
do things that make you happy even if they seem childish
