I would die for them. I would kill a man just to hear their high pitched banter. I am not going to see anyone’s face during the inevitable betrayal, because I know in my heart these two are going to stay besties for the resties.

I’m sure this bottomless pit led to a soft bed of pillows and not a pile of other cadets from training missions long past.

Adora’s kickflipping all over the place only for this gal to stroll in with her rebellious attitude and non-regulation forehead mask and not even push her off the kill square before she gets got. I love her.
Is Adora in charge of the squad then? She lied to cover for Catra’s absence, and Catra must have known that she would because she gives not one single shit about their trainer dude finding her absent or failing their final test. Catra’s got skills, clearly, but also doesn’t really care about the greater purpose here.

They aren’t very well equipped, how are they supposed to liberate anyone from the evils of universal monarchy if they only have wrist bands and metal pipes?

Kyle has chosen to lie there and marinate in his failure, and I respect him.

Whoever is drawing their propaganda is on point, great evil aesthetic.
And okay, but I’m just picturing the ending of that StarKids musical where they solve global inequality by making every citizen a princess, and I’d want to punch them in the face too.

Two places that are definitely spookier than the half-pipe lava pit dorm they’re currently in. Nothing says ‘heart of evil’ like the name ‘bright moon’.

Catra seems to be a bit of a failure at the old military brainwashing, but no one seems that fussed that she’s gone AWOL so I guess they’re pretty lax about standards around here.

None of her squad looks as excited to begin their princess punching careers as she does. And they all have a suspicious amount of red on their shirts, whicch never bodes well when you’re in an ambiguously moral military volcano base.

This woman can cram four times the aggression into her morning routine than I can muster in an entire month, which I guess is why she’s been called to fight in the laser tag princess wars and I haven’t.

She’s got a super cute pompadour and a very business casual war outfit, and I also get distracted by more exciting activities during brushing my teeth so I already feel a kinship with her.

Okay, She-Ra goes much harder than I remember it as a kid. Background music: banging. Art: awesome. Rainbow sparkles: nearly as many as the original series.

As voted for by the good people over on Patreon, we will be doing the first episode of She-Ra! Here’s what I know about this show:
She is ADORA
He-Man’s twin sister
Defender of the Crystal Castle
Fabulous secrets were revealed to her when she held up her sword and said ‘For the Honour of Greyskull!’
She-Ra She-Ra!
With her gay friends she fights to free Etheria from the forces of Hordak
Sheeeeee-Raaaaah She-Ra!

Now you’ve got me wondering: what is the show saying about the garden wall set against the Unknown’s vast unknownness? Is the garden a protective boundary of home and community, a civilising power compared to the wildness of the woods? What does it mean that those who travel through the woods are not only told these long-forgotten stories, but seem to become active participants of them?
Walls aren’t absolute borders - they belong to two spaces at the same time. A wall can mark a place where communities are separated and bound together, where they’re defined and reimagined. And communities are never absolutely fixed in time, either, which is something that seems to be quite literal in the Unknown.
I went back to listen to the theme song to check if I could see any deeper clues now that we’re two episodes in, and the answer is: not really. But there was some stuff that I noticed on rewatching:
Tumblr media
They put particular emphasis on everyone noticing that bird in the background. Could the woman be Adelaide? I think Beatrice is more involved with things than she claims.
Tumblr media
And seriously, what is up with the cat and the giant turkeys? But Pottsfield seems to be a place where they’ve imposed their will on nature, through their... creative use of agriculture, and they use it to express their power, their rituals and their conception of justice within their community. The more people who live (or ‘live’) in Pottsfield, the more power their community is able to impose over the encroaching wilderness, and perhaps the firmer the boundary is between them and the Unknown? There’s some point here about this community of forgotten souls and their stories contrasted against the Unknown and its own stories, but I don’t know what it is yet.
Tumblr media
These two kids are definitely not Wirt and Greg, but they could pass for them in some kind of shady Us scenario where they have to kill their dopplegangers.
Tumblr media
And it’s the creepy woodsguy! Presumably in the house he lived in before he moved into the abandoned mill. And this girl looks out, over the garden wall (oi oi) into the woods. So... something.
I feel like it’s all coming together, we just have to understand the clues, man.

HE’S WEARING MISMATCHING SHOES??? Wirt what is happening here??
I think we just have to accept that Wirt is fashion. He’s high end. He’s Carrie Bradshaw for the Victorian Gnome community.

A little place called illegal activity.
And originally from Apple, but Apple didn’t provide subtitles. So here we are, basically criminals now.

Greg is a forty year old man and Greg is a two foot tall child. Obviously it’s Greg. Greg smashed a man in the head with a floorboard he tore up with his own face. Greg has the core strength to keep a china teapot permanently balanced on his head during a two day hike through the woods. Greg is terrifying.
