Yellow Veil Pictures announces world sales today ahead of the Tribeca Film Festival world premiere of Yannis Veslemes’ sophomore feature and surrealistic science-fiction drama, SHE LOVED BLOSSOMS MORE. Written by Veslemes and Dimitris Emmanouilidis, the film will be positioned in the ‘Escape From Tribeca’ section of the festival, a genre specific sidebar of stand out titles with auteur-forward storytelling. Veslemes first earned acclaim with his 2014 breakout NORWAY, which debuted at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film stars Panos Papadopoulos, Julio Giorgos Katsis, Aris Balis, Sandra Abuelghanam Sarafanova, Alexia Kaltsiki & Dominique Pinon (Delicatessen, Alien 4) and was shot by cinematographer Christos Karamanis (Monday, Suntan) and edited by Yorgos Mavropsaridis (Poor Things, Dogtooth).
Tumblr media
The film is produced by Fenia Cossovitsa, alongside executive producers Christos V. Konstantakopoulos (The Lobster, Attenberg, Before Midnight), Ant Timpson (Greasy Strangler, Come to Daddy), Andreas Zoupanos Kritikos (Before Midnight) with co-producer Alexis Perrin (Vesper, Revenge). The film is supported by the Greek Film Centre, ERT (Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation) and EKOME (National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication)
In SHE LOVED BLOSSOMS MORE, three brothers build an unusual time-machine in order to bring their long-dead mother back to life. When their delusional father comes into the picture, the experiments go awry, and they descend into a psychedelic hellscape where the past and present fuse in a comedic yet deeply disturbing exploration of grief.
Director, Yannis Veslemes said, “SHE LOVED BLOSSOMS MORE is a family drama in science fiction disguise. A ballad for the defeated, a comedy for the accursed, a moral tale for us all and our beloved families.”
Hugues Barbier of Yellow Veil Pictures added, “SHE LOVED BLOSSOMS MORE is the first film we've onboarded at script stage, and it's been quite amazing to see it come alive. We couldn't be more proud of Yannis' vision and the amazing team he has around him. Blossoms is an emotional thrill ride and a calling card for one of the most exciting new filmmakers.”

ABIGAIL - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Universal Pictures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: A group of low-level criminals are brought together to pull off a caper - kidnap and babysit overnight the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, the pay-off is a $50 million ransom. The hideout is an old isolated mansion. They try to settle in for the night but the rules go by the wayside as, one by one, the gangsters grisly and mysteriously meet their demise. The gloves come off and when they confront their prisoner, to their mounting horror, they discover that they’re the prisoners and are locked inside the mansion with no normal little girl.
REVIEW: Occasionally, screenwriters attempt to breathe new life into the vampire mythos by blending genres into their screenplays. While many of these scripts start off with a great promise, the final product often falls short of expectations. However, there are a few notable exceptions that have managed to capture the essence of the vampire genre. Examples include "The Lost Boys," "Innocent Blood," "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," and "Vampires," the last two based on novels.
In Stephen Shields and Guy Busick's screenplay for ABIGAIL, elements of O. Henry's classic short story "The Ransom of Red Chief" and the 1990's film "Home Alone" converge, driven by the urban legend of Abigail's gangster father and tales inclusion of vampire mythology. The screenwriters incorporate subtle nods to Agatha Christie, creating humorous moments in the film. They skillfully weave in references to numerous films and TV shows, including "Reservoir Dogs," "Innocent Blood," and Kevin Durand's involvement in the vampire series "The Strain." The narrative is multi-layered, as the writers creatively rework the vampire myth to suit their story. What truly captivates the audience is Abigail's character arc and the motivations behind her actions. At its core, the story delves into a child's yearning for parental attention or the lack thereof, intertwined with the guilt experienced by parents. This complex exploration of parenting, children, and vampires sets ABIGAIL apart as a refreshing take on these themes since "The Lost Boys."
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett masterfully orchestrate a symphony of tension, action, and shocks that ebbs and flows like an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride. Their ability to consistently surprise and engage the viewer stems from their skillful framing and editing of sequences, coupled with the captivating performance of actress Alisha Weir, who portrayed Matilda in the 2022 adaptation of the musical. Her portrayal is simply outstanding here.
The mansion in which the characters are hiding serves as an integral character in the film. The production design is remarkable, creating a subtle yet tangible atmosphere. While there were a few scenes in the third act that raised questions about potential escape routes, my engrossment in the film at that point prevented me from giving them much thought.
The combination of practical and digital effects in the movie created some truly impressive "wow" moments, especially in the fight sequences. The dental design and contact lenses used for the vampire look were particularly well done. My favorite scenes were the visual sequences showing the destruction of the vampires—a real treat for die-hard horror fans.
The film's musical foundation is a harmonious blend of classical melodies and a gripping score composed by Brian Tyler. Tyler, a renowned composer with a rich portfolio of screen and television scores, has masterfully created musical movements that seamlessly intertwine with the classical selections, escalating the film's action and horror. In other moments, his score complements the actors' performances and heightens the suspense and tension of the scenes, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
The film features a talented cast with extensive horror experience. Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand, Kathryn Newton, and William Catlett have each starred in multiple horror films, bringing their expertise to the project. The cast also includes Matthew Goode and Giancarlo Esposito, who add their unique talents to their characters, enhancing the film's energy. This exceptional ensemble cast delivers a thrilling viewing experience, creating captivating characters that engage and entertain the audience.
ABIGAIL offers a "fangtastic" combination of a caper story and a vampire tale. It's one of the best horror-thrill rides I've experienced in theaters this year. In fact, I haven't had this much fun with a horror movie since "The Lost Boys" or "Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn." Not since Macaulay Culkin faced off against bumbling heist men has a kid's involvement in an action film been so entertaining. Yes, it's a bloody film, but families with tweens should venture to their local cinema for a killer good time.
CAST: Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Alisha Weir, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud and Giancarlo Esposito. You've got visitors from another world, graveyards riddled with rising corpses, shootouts with the cops, flying saucers fighting the army, alien abductions, and a government conspiracy to cover the whole thing up. That sounds like a great movie to me!”
Comedian and writer Dana Gould provided a foreword to the book. In it, he states, “PLAN 9 is more than a movie, it’s a way of life. A password. A secret handshake that signifies membership in very select group: smart folks with big hearts and evolved senses of humor. I’m speaking, of course, about weirdos.”
Mark Alan Miller, president of Encyclopocalypse Publications, invites all weirdos to join in the festivities. “I wish everyone could sit in a room with Bret and watch PLAN 9 with him. It’s an unparalleled experience. His genuine love for the movie spills onto every page of this novelization.”

ARCADIAN - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: RLJE Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: A cataclysmic event has decimated life on Earth, leaving Paul and his two sons, Thomas and Joseph, in a state of existence that is half-life, with tranquility during the day and torment at night. As the sun sets, relentless and violent creatures attack them nightly, probing for weakness. When Thomas fails to return home before sundown one day, Paul ventures from the safety of their fortified farm in search of his son. Separated, a nightmare battle ensues, forcing the family to execute a desperate plan for survival as the creatures’ plans are uncovered.
REVIEW: ARCADIAN is a quintessential sci-fi movie. Set against the backdrop of a creature feature, the film tells a coming-of-age story about brothers going through growing pains, with elements reminiscent of "A Quiet Place" and "Bird Box."
In Mike Nilon's screenplay, the creatures' motivations remain largely unexplained, suggesting they may be a manifestation of environmental decay. The story revolves around brothers Thomas and Joseph. Thomas, troubled by growing pains, develops an infatuation with Charlotte, a neighbor's daughter. His tardiness disrupts the family's ritual to prepare for the darkness that brings the creatures, escalating tensions and leading to tragedy.
This tragedy allows Joseph to uncover what the creatures have been planning. Forced to put aside their differences, the brothers unite to confront them, fostering character growth and maturity. The characters at the neighboring farm come off as simplistic, while Charlotte serves as a catalyst for tension and evolves as the story progresses. The adult characters take a back seat, with even the father fading into the background until a crucial moment of self-sacrifice.
ARCADIAN emerges as a classic morality tale that explores the human condition, utilizing the threat of the creatures to examine character relationships, much like an episode of "The Twilight Zone."
In this visually stunning film shot in Ireland, Director Benjamin Brewer skillfully transitions between fast-paced and serene moments. The picturesque landscapes, rustic interiors, and creature designs add to the immersive visual experience. There is the scene with the creatures that seems peculiar and out of place, it still contributes to the overall interesting quality of the story. It deals with the creatures' menacing actions before their attacks. Additionally, I thought there was a bit too much shaky camera for my tastes. However, overall I found this film a visual feast that engages the audience on multiple levels.
In the film's score, composers Josh Martin and Kristin Gundred artfully intertwine beautiful musical sequences with emotional intensity. Their music seamlessly complements the film's tranquil moments and highlights the characters' distress, creating a poetic and evocative soundscape. Additionally, Josh Martin composed the song "You Don't Know My Heart," performed by Daughn Gibson, which plays over the credits, delightfully bringing the film to a close.
The film features exceptional performances from its cast. Nicolas Cage delivers an intense and contemplative portrayal of a father figure. His character may not be the quintessential alpha male, but he exudes strength and determination as he strives to protect his sons. Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins, who play Joseph and Thomas, respectively, bring a magical presence to the screen. They create compelling characters that embody youthful innocence and enthusiasm. Together, the three actors create a cohesive family dynamic, authentically portraying the challenges and growth they face. The boys also skillfully navigate the action sequences, showcasing their talent and physicality. Additionally, actress Sadie Soverall presents a compelling character who navigates survival in a challenging and unpredictable world, while also dealing with the complexities of relationships with her parents and Thomas.
"ARCADIAN," a family survival film, captivated me with its charismatic family drama and visually imposing creatures. Set against the picturesque Irish landscape, the film takes on a fairy tale-like quality. Benjamin Brewer, a multi talented writer, director, and visual effects designer, elicited solid performances from his talented cast, including a standout performance from Nicholas Cage. Known for his work as the lead visual effects designer on "Everything Everywhere All At Once," it is not surprising that "ARCADIAN" is a visually engaging film. Brewer's passion and talent shine through in this charming and compelling film, leaving me eager to see his next project.
CAST: Nicolas Cage, Jaeden Martell, Maxwell Jenkins, Sadie Soverall, Samantha Coughlan, Joe Dixon, and Joel Gillman. Nestled near an infamous site associated with the Manhattan Project, lies Richland, Washington, one of three small towns in its vicinity. By July 1945, the site had three reactors operational, producing sufficient plutonium for both an atomic bomb test and the bomb dropped on Nagasaki in August of the same year. The site continued to be involved in nuclear projects until the 1980s, when it transitioned into an environmental cleanup project.
Tumblr media
This is the backdrop and the childhood home of author Tim Mulligan, where reality and myth intertwine. Jared has just landed his dream job at the Hanford Nuclear Site. This exciting opportunity brings him, his husband Van, and their adopted African American daughter Ali to temporary accommodations. As they eagerly await their new home to be finished, they find themselves living across the street from a reclusive and mysterious neighbor—a witch. A series of strange and unnerving events unfold, leading the family to question the true nature of their neighbor. Could she be a real witch, or are they merely experiencing the adverse health effects of living in the shadow of "the most toxic place in the Western Hemisphere"?
Tumblr media
WITCHLAND is Tim Mulligan first play and it’s based on his own experiences growing up in the real Witchland - Richland, WA. Since writing Witchland, Tim has added two other tales set in his mysterious hometown to create a trilogy - Snitchland, and Bitchland – all written as plays and as graphic novels. The first graphic novel, Witchland: A Graphic Novel, was published in February 2024. Tim is also the author of the best-selling leadership book, “ROAR,” as well as the recent “A Perfect 10” cookbook series. Tim is an avid fan of theater/movies/books/TV, pretty much all things pop culture – especially in the horror genre.
WITCHLAND was recently staged at the Chain Theater the first two weekends of April 2024. For information about future productions and links to view and purchase the graphic novel, visit witchlandplay.com.

WITCHLAND - Review
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: In the quaint town of Richland, Washington, Jared's dream job at the Hanford Nuclear Site brings about an exciting change for his family. As they eagerly await their new home to be finished, they find themselves residing in temporary accommodations right across the street from a reclusive, mysterious neighbor - a witch. As a series of strange and unnerving events unfold, the family begins to question the true nature of their neighbor. Could she be a real witch, or are they merely experiencing the adverse health effects plaguing the residents living in the shadow of a place designated as "the most toxic place in the Western Hemisphere"? Welcome to the captivating town of Witchland, where the boundaries between truth and myth become blurred.
REVIEW: Playwright Tim Mulligan’s WITCHLAND is a multi-layered story of a modern American family who relocates to one of “the most toxic places in the Western Hemisphere.” The play explores whether the legend of the witch has supernatural roots or if she is merely a scapegoat for the misfortunes of the residents who have suffered from the toxic effects of the Hanford Nuclear Site. Mulligan immerses the audience in a surreal yet heartfelt semi-biographical journey.
Tumblr media
(L-R) Actor Dave Silberger, Mars Holscher, and Geoffrey Grady in Tim Mulligan’s WITCHLAND directed by Ken Wolf.
At the play's core is Ali, an African-American teen, the adopted daughter of Jared and Van, a gay married couple. Despite their issues, the play emphasizes that the town of Richland lacks the diversity and community of their previous home. Mulligan infuses satire and humor into this dark narrative, addressing family issues, cursed residents, a witch's tale, and the looming dangers of the power plant. As Ali uncovers the mystery of the witch, she matures into a responsible adult, attempting to lift the curse placed on her fathers and classmates. Mulligan crafts an impactful myth surrounding the witch, rendering the character relatable at a later point in the play. Similar to classic tween horror stories, the adults remain oblivious to the real danger, leaving Ali to step up as a reluctant hero. While Ali is the most memorable character, the supporting cast of characters is equally engaging as they grapple with the looming threats of the witch and the power plant.
The production successfully overcomes the limitations of the theater space, with director Kate Murphy skillfully staging the playwright's vision. The action extends beyond the stage, with scenes unfolding in the audience break between sections and the back of the theater, immersing the audience in the story. Atmospheric enhancements, such as lighting, sound, and props, are used to create dreamlike sequences that, while somewhat whimsical, manage to be unsettling. These sequences, at times, directly impact the characters, adding an extra layer of tension and intrigue.
Tumblr media
(L-R) Actor Theresa Delle Valle, Dave Silberger & Chelsea Clark in Tim Mulligan’s WITCHLAND directed by Ken Wolf.
The limited stage and sound system were my primary sources of frustration. The witch's yard and front door were on one side of the main stage, opposite the family's kitchen, which restricted some of the action. The stage felt cramped and hindered the energy of several scenes when many cast members were on stage.
The production utilizes original music and sound design. However, since the actors perform without microphones, the volume of these elements is intentionally kept low, which hinders their impact and ability to create ambiance. Similarly, the set design and props are intentionally minimalistic, fulfilling only the basic requirements to support the drama. Despite these limitations, there are instances where these elements effectively contribute to unexpected and captivating moments in the story.
The cast's performance nicely brought the characters to life, establishing a strong connection with the audience. Mars Holscher's portrayal of Ali added a "Nancy Drew" quality to the character, creating a charming and memorable performance. Dave Silberger and Geoffrey Grady's performance was reminiscent of a classic comedy duo, enhanced by their contemporary edge, bringing a fresh perspective. Actress Theresa Della Valle excelled in creating a looming presence as the witch, with limited dialogue in the form of non-English chants and spells to convey her character's mystical nature. The entire cast skillfully navigated frequent scene and costume changes, demonstrating their physical versatility. With a running time of over 90 minutes, the show demanded considerable physical exertion from the performers. I attended the second performance and there were some moments when actors appeared less comfortable in their roles, but this is likely to improve with increased familiarity with the characters.

With the New York production being the third staging of WITCHLAND, it's evident that the story and staging of the play have intricate layers that are impacted by the limitations of the performance space. Mulligan's creation features captivating locations, distinct characters, and a gripping supernatural element that actively engages the audience. By thinking beyond the confines of the stage, Mulligan successfully brings the tale closer to the audience, keeping them on the edge of their seats. The play's diverse appeal extends to horror enthusiasts and theater lovers alike. Director Kate Murphy skillfully utilizes the spatial limitations, adding exceptional energy and atmosphere to the production. WITCHLAND stands as a memorable off-Broadway experience that leaves audiences eagerly anticipating its return for a longer run.
