There were probably some medieval asexuals that were absolutely insufferable on their moral high horse about it. Like "this modesty shit easy - I haven't lusted over any man ever in my life and only fuck my husband out of duty from God and only so that we have children. I am so much better than any of you hoes."

And some other local goodwife would get sick of this and go "well obviously you don't have time for cock, Maergaret, since you're always too fucking busy choking on your own vanity and pride!" and have a smackfight that progresses into a full-on two-woman brawl in the town square. People gather around to watch this until a clergyman shows up to remind everyone that not only is this kind of brawl between good christians definitely a sin, it's also a sin for everyone who's watching to place bets on who's going to win.

several times a day i will come across a post that i would otherwise agree with about a Thing Being Bad but it is unfortunately like inexplicably linked to a reactionary societal decay narrative for like no reason whatsoever

Y'know I said all this but I think the truth is this fic is just an elaborate excuse to make Husk scratch the shit out of Val's face

Do you ever come up with a fic idea and just kinda go "Okay, if a specific subsection of the fandom finds this, they'll eat me alive, but I guess that's just how it be"

I've decided I'm gonna write a Huskerdust fic that's basically a character study of how Angel's trauma with Val affects his outlook on relationships as a whole. One thing I really wanna do is parallel his current budding romance with Husk with flashbacks of his "romance" with Val back before he signed the contract. I wanna make the flashback scenes with Val genuinely seem romantic and spicy because of how the relationship ends up actually being. You as the reader know how this ends, Angel in that moment doesn't, it is MEANT to be horrifying, it's MEANT to leave you angry with a horrible taste in your mouth. Then, it reinforces Angel's struggle with not knowing if he can trust his relationship with Husk won't turn out that way, because once things with Val were great, but Val was a monster.

It all is meant to make his leap of faith at the end all the more satisfying. But I KNOW. There is a subsection of the fandom that's gonna read "legitimately romantic Angel/Val scenes" and ignore the rest and hunt me for sport. Like. It's just a fact

And I guess that's just how it be

If people were too mean to you when you were growing up, a newborn animal will materialize inside your brain and it’s so so scared and shivering and it will stay there for years. Decades, even. And whenever you say something kind of weird but true to your heart the animal will tell you “Noo! You can’t say that! If you say that, everyone will hate you!”. The animal means well. It’s so so small and everything is so scary for them and it’s just trying to protect you. But listen to me. Listen to me. Whenever this happens, you can’t do what the animal says. You can’t. If you do, you’ll become as scared as the animal. You have to keep saying weird shit. You have to keep doing things the animal wouldn’t approve of. If you do enough things that scare the animal, maybe one day it’ll go to sleep.

I think bad writing is genuinely quite rare. The more you learn about writing, the easier it is to find something to love in even the most rough and amateurish work. New authors often have crackshot skill in at least one arena of their craft, and there is always something to learn from a text like that.

I've read a lot of clumsy writing. But when an author is passionate about their practice, it's hard to truly hate it. I think much of what we consider bad writing is only called "bad" out of convenience and context.

In my mind, Truly Bad Writing has a sort of naive malice to it. The best example in my mind is Ben Shapiro's work. It is cruel, arrogant, a bit pompous, and powerfully, embarrassingly, ineffective.
