In the contemporary metropolis one can often get the impression that there is no end, edge, limit or border. The city seems to extend in all directions to the horizon, often with monotony and apparent alienating repetitions. However, for those who live in it, the infinite city is not only a source of stress and frustration, but it is often an exciting jungle, a continuous challenge full of possibilities and unpredictable opportunities. In the infinite city we become small and the fear of being crushed can be great, but despite this it irresistibly attracts us, like a siren call.

CONSTELLATIONS. from the series “The stars reflected in the eyes”, oil, wood sticks and cotton thread on plywood, 24 x 24 cm each one, 2023.
Anything that can be classified in a homogeneous series exerts an attraction on me and an impulse to draw it. Perhaps what attracts me is the research of the variant, the exploration of the rules that allow the inclusion of that group of objects in a single set but giving to each object its uniqueness. So I always liked to draw eyes. Individual eyes, wide eyes, groups of eyes, half closed eyes. To change the expression or play with colors and decorations as if it were a make-up, allows endless variations. Even the constellations in the sky are endless, and I drew these too, as if they were geometric embroidery or imaginary and arbitrary warping created for the sole purpose of interpreting a reality difficult to understand. Then, when the verse of a mawkish romantic song came into my thoughts ("The starlight is reflected in your eyes ..."), I could not resist to create a new series, based on the union of those two, which although have nothing to do with each other, related by the only fact of being homogeneous sets, ready to be classified to quench the thirst of an artist that is anxious to bring order into its chaotic imaginary world.

STRATIFICATION. Oil on canvas, 50 x 80 cm (19.7 x 31.5 in), 2023.
Cutting a rock reveals an intricate pattern of layers that have sedimented over very long periods of time. The succession of geological eras sees the depositing, one veil after another, of the materials that will create a complicated abstract embroidery. A sort of map is created which embodies the sense of the passage of time and the sense of the substance and of its weight.

CONSTELLATION NUMBER 13. An original piece from the series “Embroideries”; oil on thick paper; 40 x 40 cm, 2022.
The maps of the sky, unlike the traditional maps, have no edges or boundaries. Here there is no demarcation between land and water, there is only the position of dots representing the stars in the vacuum of space, and possibly the lines joining these points, to create similarities with animals, symbols or objects that help us remember and recognize. The plot of these points and these lines creates a fictional embroidery. This is the starting point from which I begin this series of paintings. But here the map quickly becomes tangled and twisted. Symbolic forms and objects appear. At first they seem to be of value in orientation, but soon they reveal to be obstacles, capable of generating a maze, and so you get lost, passing from a geometric order to the chaos of a tangled skein.

An original piece from the series “Reliefs”, oil on paper and cardboard, 19 x 30 cm (original sold).
When we consider a road map or a map of the territory we note that they contain different information that are represented by different means, according to the purpose for which they were created: each time we find colors, symbols and words that recall a precise meaning. What happens if I take these techniques of representation, these symbols, and take off the scope for which they were created and mingle them with each other? Will it be for the reader a text in a foreign language, that is meaningless, or through the world of associations and references that each of us possesses, will generate a new language and associate to those images a new meaning?
In these paintings, in particular, I am interested in contours that highlight the points of the territory which are at the same elevation. In my works, they become the borders of different colors or shades, bringing out hidden shapes and concentric curves.

Let's imagine that we are lying down in a meadow on a bright spring day. At the foot of a tree the light filters through the leaves. Among the flashes that obscure the view and make us squint, the outlines of the branches, fronds and green blend and mix with the blue of the sky. The leaves crossed by the light are almost transparent, but their shadow falls upon us and protects us, instilling a sense of peace.

“The entrance of the churches”. Oil on thick paper, 20 x 50 cm each one, 2022.
The entrance of a church is a clear point of passage, the precise limit between an inside and an outside, a metaphor built to represent the transition from a physical reality to a spiritual reality. No matter the faith, no matter the belonging to a religion. Even an atheist, entering a church (especially an Italian church), will experience the abrupt transition from the open air to the closed, fresh and humid scent, impregnated by the smell of incense and ancient wood; he will especially experience the transition from light to shadow, and will perceive the sensation of having approached the border with the unknown and the inexplicable.
