we need to talk about Caitlyn’s whole interaction with Huck
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(gifs credits: refuted & lena-luthor)
When Caitlyn walks out of Vi’s home, she’s immediately intercepted by Huck and pulls out her gun at him defensively. She softens when he explains that he’s a friend and that he owes Vi’s old man his life (and probably more than that). It’s an important detail about Vi’s life that Vi hasn’t disclosed to her yet. It tells Caitlyn that Vi has been raised by a great man.
As soon as she realizes this man is harmless and is a person that means something to Vi, she lets her guard down. She doesn’t aim her gun at him anymore. She tries to understand why he would take Shimmer if it destroys him. No judgment, just curiosity. She doesn’t refute his explanation either or try to moralize him.
She hugs him.
He’s a pure stranger with a loose connection to Vi and this is how she treats him.
He ultimately betrays them both, but it doesn’t occur to Caitlyn in the moment because he brings her to the cure that saves Vi. He knows Vi. She wanted Vi to see him - she wanted to make her happy, but because he’s ashamed of his appearance, she does what she thinks Vi would have wanted to do.
She hugs him on Vi’s behalf.
Granted, she’s a bit naive, but so so sweet. It shows the layers upon layers of empathy she feels. In my opinion, it’s her best moment of character establishment. She extends her sympathy for this man because he knows Vi and he helps her when he’s got no real reason to do this, especially since she’s a Topsider.
Caitlyn’s kindness is unbelievable. She’s doing this selflessly and she doesn’t even get to tell Vi about him nor the trade. I don’t know if she knows he betrayed them, but Vi sees him.
Vi only sees the betrayal and barely has a reaction to it. She would have expected it. Huck knows Vi recognizing him would have most likely set off alarm bells in her head that they had been spotted. She wouldn’t have blindly trusted him.
I love this exchange so much. It shows just how much love Caitlyn is willing to give. I love Caitlyn :’)

I just thought of a cool idea for a Legend of Korra fanfic: Set before the start of Book 2, after having a heated argument with Korra, Asami is attacked by a mysterious spirit that causes Asami to believe she is early Book 1 Korra. Team Avatar is completely shocked by this turn of events, with Tenzin telling them that the only way to reverse this is to find the spirit. But, unfortunately, Asami has a huge week of important meeting at Sato Industries, with visiting investors from the different nations, that could make or break the company. So, Korra decides to pretend to be Asami (since the investors don’t know what Asami really looks like) and run Sato Industries, until they can track down the spirit. What Korra never realized, though, is just how hard being Asami Sato really is! Curious about your thoughts on this! Also, do you think the spirit could have given Asami bending abilities along with the false memories/identity? Because, I was thinking that would be a cool twist, but wasn’t sure if it would fit with the lore established in canon.
Anything’s possible in ATLA/LOK as long as you somewhat back it up, so I think it could work! And it would be really funny 😂

Listen, about the SUPERCORP KISSED tag on twitter, i've seen a few post here calling them (us, i guess, since i participated) out for confusing the fandom. But let me tell you, it wasn't done maliciously, at least not as far as I can tell (obviously I can't speak for everyone). The first manip was done yesterday, and went sort of viral, and people started responding with it to the cwsg twitter account, and calling them out for the queerbaiting, and they have been posting all this week, which they haven't done in all the season, so things went from there.
(Not my vid)
Then this happened (and i don't know if it was the first but it was the one i saw):
Tumblr media
(I'm censoring their @/ because i don't want to seem like i'm calling them out, because i'm not)
And the trend started immediately, it was basically surreal. It went to trend pretty much in 10 min. And it kept going and going. And I think here is when the confusion started, because it was a petty thing, but i don't think it was malicious, but the tag grew so big so fast, that people that were shippers but are not around much in fandom started getting confused. And then the k@ramels(pls dni) shippers starting mocking, which escalated things even more. And the way that those two fandoms interact is pretty volatile.
Tumblr media
Then more manips started coming out (pretty good ones, tbh) of cameras supposedly filming the scene. Again, it was something petty, but ultimately harmless. But get this there were new "pics" and "scripts" coming out that even a few people that were trending since the beggining, and saw the original tweet with the manip, started to think that there was a kiss that was filmed and cut. So there was a mess... (I personally just assumed everything was fake)
The tag grew so much, that some press people did buy into it. (In a very andrea rojas catco editor in chief, these people didn't fact check anything 😂)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing is that most people (that i saw, anyways. Including myself) were doing it just for fun. And because of said tag, some press is talking about the queerbaiting the cw employs pretty much in all their shows, and especifically in supergirl. Also, some people started using the trending topic to boost a fundraiser that was posted a few days back for the trevor project, in name of supercorp. So good thing, yeah?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Listen it's hard to control the social media of it all, and especially with this type of engagement, while i'm writing this the trend has 80k tweets, which is the biggest SC has everdone. And it was umprompted, in a fandom that was strung along for 5 years, so I won't blame them for trying to have some fun with the hand they've been dealt.
Tumblr media
So tl;dr: sorry the thing on twitter confused part of the fandom. It was not malicious and it was just for fun. (Can't talk for all the fandom, but yeah? I guess?)

Crisis Redo Pt 5
Kara's heart sinks as quickly as it had lifted at the unexpected sight of Lena. Her jaw works soundlessly, no words coming out until Kara can catch her breath.
"Lena..." is all she can get out before Lena's features harden.
"Nope." Lena's mouth downturns to a deliberate frown. She turns on her heel and goes back the way she came. "Nope, not doing this."
"Wha-- buh... Lena!" Kara calls after her, breaking into a trot. She jogs after Lena, speeding up when Lena begins to run as well, setting a steady, well-practiced pace through the trees. "Wait!"
Lena ignores her, soon huffing in even breaths as she resumes the run Kara had so rudely interrupted. Determined, Kara speeds up until she matches Lena stride for stride, jogging alongside her.
"I swear I'm not following you," Kara explains as smoothly as she can. Lena shoots her a sharp glare. "I mean, I am now, but I didn't know you were going to be here, honest."
Unlike Lena, her lungs don't pant for air, and her skin doesn't moisten with sweat. She could keep this pace for days, and she can see the moment Lena considers trying to outrun her, only to dismiss it out of hand. Any pace Lena set, Kara could easily outmatch.
In the end, Lena simply stops in the middle of the trail. Kara travels on a couple of steps, then backtracks to rejoin her.
"Exactly what part of our last conversation suggested I wanted to see you again?" Lena demands.
Kara sighs. "None. I know, you want nothing to do with me--"
"Due in no small part to the fact that I now have nightmares about shooting my brother and hearing him laugh at me for being a goddamned idiot." Lena huffs, crossing her arms to keep from gesticulating. Her fingers press hard into her biceps to keep her hands still. "Which is a memory you put back in my head-- without my consent, thank you very much."
Shame floods Kara, from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. "I know... and I'm sorry--"
"Really? See, I don't think you are. Because despite me wanting nothing to do with you, here you are."
"I was just driving, and I ended up at the bed and breakfast last night--"
"And I'm supposed to believe that it's all just one big coincidence?"
"Yes!" Kara clips out, frustrated and helpless. "Because it is! I'm on vacation!"
"Vacation," Lena repeats, nonplussed. "In my town. In the middle of nowhere."
"Mhmm," Kara hums haughtily.
"And you just so happen to show up on my favorite running trail."
Kara falters. "Yeah, well... it's a public trail!"
Lena rolls her eyes. "Right. Well, I hope you enjoyed your stay at Nancy's. And your drive back to National City."
Sighing, Kara reaches for her friend. "Lena..."
Lena pulls away, tightening her ponytail. "Stay away from me," Lena warns, before turning and continuing her run.
This time, Kara lets her go, listening to the sound of Lena's footsteps long after the woman is out of sight.
---
Walking back to the inn, Kara decides to respect Lena's wishes. As much as she wants to stay, it's clear that Lena is uncomfortable to have her there, and she knows that crossing Lena's boundaries would only make things worse.
She showers in the en suite to her room and changes her clothes before taking advantage of the breakfast provided in the dining room. She chats with some of the other guests, but the conversation is superficial, meaningless. After, she takes a stroll down Main Street, but is careful to avoid getting anywhere close to where she knows Lena's practice sits.
On her way back, Kara's eye catches on a quaint food truck sitting on the boundary of the town square. As she nears, she discovers that its a bakery truck, complete with hot drinks to go. Kara orders a large vanilla caramel latte and a dozen assorted pastries for the road.
"You look familiar," the cashier says. Kara looks up-- and freezes when she recognizes Lena's mother Elizabeth behind the counter.
Kara immediately flushes. "Oh, uhm, well.... I just have one of those faces..."
"No, I definitely recognize you from somewhere. I have an eye for these sorts of things." Elizabeth regards her curiously as she transfers the pastries from their cases to the box. "You ever come through Willow Creek before?"
Kara shakes her head. "No... first time. It's lovely though."
Elizabeth nods. "That it is. Think we might just stick around."
"We?" Kara prompts, unable to help herself.
"Oh, my daughter became the town doctor, oh-- about eight years back now. Lena. She settled here, and I figured I'd come join her for a bit. Now it doesn't look like we'll be leaving any time soon..." Elizabeth trails off, then smiles brightly when she spots something over Kara's shoulder. "Oh! Here she comes now!"
Kara presses her eyes shut, bracing herself for the outrage that's sure to come. But when she turns, Lena only glowers once before schooling her features to deliver a smile to her mother.
"Lena! Come meet one of our visitors!"
"Morning, mom," Lena greets. She shoots Kara a look. "Kara."
"Hi, Lena," Kara says quietly.
"Oh, you've already met!" Elizabeth exclaims happily. "How wonderful." Then she pauses, her brow furrowing not unlike her daughter's does when faced with a particular intriguing problem. "Kara... oh! You're Kara Danvers, aren't you!"
Kara offers a grimacing smile. "Guilty."
Lena snorts.
Elizabeth rewards Kara with a broad smile. "Oh my goodness! I must have read every single one of your articles. Proud CatCo subscriber since 1998."
"Sorry to interrupt, mom," Lena interjects, "but do you have my regular? I'm late to the clinic."
Elizabeth reaches over and plucks a prepared travel mug from the counter behind her and hands it to her daughter. "Lena, you never told me you knew Kara Danvers."
For a moment, Lena freezes, and Kara can see the gears working inside her head as she swiftly considered what and how much to tell her mother.
"It's a recent development," is what she comes up with.
Kara nods in agreement. "We met when Lena was recently in National City. She, ah, she mentioned Willow Creek and I just had to see it for myself."
"And now she's seen it," Lena affirms, giving Kara a pointed look. Then she gestures with her thermos towards her mother. "Thanks, Mom. I should be home a little early today. Bye, Kara."
Kara watches Lena leave, then gives Elizabeth an apologetic look. "Yeah, I'm leaving this afternoon."
"Nonsense!" Elizabeth counters, leaning forward intently. "You can't leave before the Autumn Festival this weekend!"
"Oh, no, I couldn't... I have to--" Well, she doesn't have to get back to work, and her family probably wouldn't wonder where she was for another five days or so, so...
"At least stay for tea this afternoon," Elizabeth insists. "I close up shop in a few hours, and I'd love to pick your brain for details about Cat Grant."
Kara startles then, just a little. "Miss Grant?"
"Of course! I ran into her once in Metropolis, and her aura was unlike anything I'd ever seen before..." Elizabeth cocks her head to one side, as though studying Kara in a new light. "A little like yours, actually."
Kara flushes, tucking her hair behind one ear. "I uh-- I'd love to, but--"
"It's settled then!" Elizabeth says, clapping her hands together. "Come back here at two and we'll have some tea."
Before Kara can protest further, someone in line behind her clears their throat intently. Shuffling off to the side, Kara moves out of the way, her thoughts swirling chaotically in her head.
Lena is going to kill her if she finds out Kara had tea with her mom. On the other hand, Elizabeth intrigues Kara, and Kara finds herself desperately wanting to know the woman who raised Lena with so much love. If risking Lena's ire was the price to learn more of Elizabeth, it might just be worth it.
At least Lena probably didn't have any kryptonite squirreled away up here in the woods of Willow Creek...
Did she?

Crisis Redo Pt 4
Despite everything, Kara hopes.
Hopes that Lena will look at her, and see her remorse. Hopes that Lena will feel some sort of connection to the people she's been working with for weeks. Hopes that Lena will stay.
But as soon as Lex is safely in government custody, the first person Lena turns to is J'onn.
"Can you take the memories back?"
The question breaks Kara's heart. Refusing to stay is one thing. Wanting to erase any trace of Kara, of their life together... Kara has to cough to cover the sob that bubbles out of her.
But J'onn shakes his head. "Now that the memories have mingled with those of this reality, erasing them could do irreparable damage to your mind. You could forget everything."
Kara thanks Rao that Lena isn't quite that desperate. Lena looks away, thinking, then turns back to the Martian. "Could you... preserve the memories of this reality? It feels like... it's slipping away."
To that, J'onn nods. "Yes. It's natural for your memories of the previous reality to take priority in your mind, but I can make it so that neither overpowers the other."
Lena breathes a sigh of relief. "Thank you." She cracks a wry smile. "Last thing I need is to forget half of med school."
The process is a short one, with the two of them facing each other and meditating. Kara watches nervously, but Lena doesn't seem affected when Lena finally opens her eyes and sighs. J'onn helps her to her feet. "You may have a low grade headache for a few days, but it will pass."
Lena nods. "Thank you."
Clearing her throat, Kara steps forward as J'onn leaves. They're alone in the command center, and Kara makes one last ditch effort.
"You could stay with me, you know."
"This isn't my home, Kara." Lena's gaze is deep, certain. "I want to go home."
Kara nods. Extending an arm towards Lena, she offers her hand. "Then lets get you home."
She drops Lena off in front of the house with the wild and colorful front yard. Lena steps out of her arms with a thank you, but hesitates when Kara clasps her by the hand.
"Here," she says. She offers Lena a signal watch-- the same one she'd had made for Lena in the last reality. "Just in case."
But Lena closes her hand around Kara's, leaving the watch clearly in Kara's palm.
"Thanks," she says softly. "But no thanks."
With that, Lena pulls away. Kara watches her make her way along the twisting path to the house, then disappear inside it.
Lena doesn't look back.
---
Kara does her best to continue her life. She juggles her job at CatCo until she can't anymore. When she quits, she's aimless, listless. She considers freelancing, and puts in a halfhearted effort to pursue it, but when even being Supergirl fails to keep her occupied, Kara has to admit that the problem isn't the world around her: it's her heart not wanting to be in it.
It's Alex's idea to take some time off, to go visit Eliza in Midvale, or fly over to Metropolis to see Clark. Kara opts for Midvale. She stays a few days with Eliza, but even there she's restless. So she just.... keeps going. Driving further up the coast, she watches the cities melt into towns into forestland. And there, in woods so deep she can't see the stars for all the trees, Kara finds herself in a small town whose welcome sign she misses in the dark.
She pulls into the first bed and breakfast she sees and takes their last room for the night. She falls asleep fully clothed, before she can even pull back the covers. She wakes early though, and when she opens the window the chill mountain air fills her lungs with the scent of pine and woodsmoke.
It's... perfect.
The proprietor points her in the direction of some nature trails, and Kara sets off in nothing but her clothes from the day before, her denim jacket, and her flat-soled sneakers. As she walks further and further along the gravel trail, Kara lets her mind drift in the stillness.
Up here, there is no background noise of traffic or cellphones. All she can hear is the crackle of warming wood and birds singing, and the whoosh of her own breath. It reminds her, in a way, of Kaznia.
Her mind drifts so far that she doesn't hear another hiker approaching from the other direction until gravel grinds sharply underfoot when they stop abruptly at the next turn, freezing just within view.
Kara jolts to a stop, and stares at Lena in her leggings and puffy vest, cheeks rosy and breath misting from her lips in the morning chill. In the next instant, she watches Lena's shock turn to anger.
"You have got to be fucking kidding me."

Saw this post by @cletusthurstonbeauregard a few days ago, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. It’s right after Lena told Kara that iconic line, “Supergirl may have saved me, but you, Kara Danvers, are my hero.”
With deep, mysterious music quavering over the scene, Lena gazes at a chess piece, a white knight, before placing it next to the black queen, which is not the same spot she picked it up from. She deliberately put those two pieces together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first I thought Kara was the white knight and Lena the black queen. But in the flashback scene that intersperses with this one, we see young Lena playing chess with Lex. “Check,” he says, with a move of his black queen. Lena counters by taking the queen with her white knight and calls, “Checkmate.” 🧐💡😮
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🙀 GASP! It’s Lena who is the white knight! 🤯 She is the hero of her own story!
She’s smart. She’s cunning. She’s not just a pawn in her family’s game as we’ve been led to believe so far. She’s capable of thinking ahead, backing her opponents into a corner, and forcing them to play into her hand.
I’M SCREAMING! THE SYMBOLISM! PEAK STORYTELLING!
Such delicious foreshadowing that Lena will “fall into the light.” But of course, it can’t be too obvious - we need the drama after all - and we leave the scene with a shot of Lena, her face shrouded with a dark look.

Kara drops onto the balcony of the tower, dusting the last of the rubble from the collapsing building she’s just saved off of her hands. She’d managed to save the entire warehouse with no casualties and minimal structural damage, and she’s feeling pleased with herself.
She can’t wait to tell Lena.
When she moves into the common room, she spots Kelly and Nia sitting on the couch, sharing sly looks. She looks from Kelly’s quiet smile to Nia’s full grin and crinkles her brow. She’s not sure she wants to know.
“Hey, have you guys seen Lena?”
Nia’s grin curls at the corners.
“She’s in the lab-”
Kara’s already ten steps in that direction before can finish her sentence, and when she does it stops the Kryptonian in her tracks, one boot frozen above the ground.
“-with William.”
“Oh?” Kara’s head cocks to the side in confusion, the joy she’d felt from her successful mission slowly draining out of her for reasons unknown. “Is he helping her with something?”
“He’d like to be,” Nia says and Kelly swats her on the arm, giving her a gently admonishing look that she’s absolutely mastered since becoming a mom.
Kara looks between them slowly, unable to connect the dots of what exactly is happening and unsure if she wants to. After a moment, Kelly has mercy on her.
“William came to the tower today to ask Lena on a date.”
Kara’s boot that had been frozen above the ground slams into the floor hard enough that she feels wood splinter beneath her heel.
Nia barely contains a cackle before slapping a hand over her mouth, having the decency to look ashamed, if only marginally.
“He brought her cookies,” she says once her hand has returned to her lap.
Kara’s look of confusion transforms into a scowl.
“He...William...Lena...what?”
Before either woman can respond the door to the lab is opening, and William comes into the common room, Lena just a few steps behind. His cheeks are a little darker than usual and Lena is smiling at him.
A big smile. A double dimple smile. The kind usually reserved for Kara.
She’s suddenly overcome by the urge to put her other foot through the floor, or maybe her hand through the wall, or maybe her fist into William’s happy, smiling face.
“Ladies,” William greets them all with a single wave goodbye. It’s then that Kara notices the tupperware in his other hand. The empty tupperware.
She stands rooted to the spot, one boot in the ground, heart in her throat, and can only watch as Lena walks William all the way to the elevator, like he for some reason couldn’t find it on his own.
They reach the elevator and as the doors slide open Lena reaches out and gives his arm a squeeze before he steps through. As the doors close his eyes can’t quite meet Lena’s in a shy way that makes Kara’s heart clench.
It’s only when he’s gone that Lena turns around and acknowledges Kara.
“Hey! How was the mission?” she’s still wearing that pretty smile, her cheeks dusted in pink.
She is the single most beautiful thing Kara has ever seen, and it makes her heart swell almost painfully. Frost tingles in her lungs as she takes a deep breath and doesn’t respond, marching into the lab without acknowledging Lena at all.
She can’t.
In the lab she leans against the workbench, fingers digging into the wood so hard that it begins to splinter. She doesn’t notice, too focused on controlling the sudden thundering of her heart in her chest and whooshing of blood in her ears.
She’s in that same position when Lena comes in behind her.
“Kara? Are you okay? Did something happen on the mission?” She sounds concerned and soft. It shifts Kara’s mood instantly as she’s overcome by the need to make sure Lena doesn’t worry. About anything, ever, but especially about Kara.
She releases her hold on the table and spins around, fully intending to explain about the building and the bystanders and the dust on her pants.
“You can’t date William.”
Lena goes through a face journey, from worried to confused to raising one perfectly practiced brow in under two seconds.
“I can't do what?”
“You can’t date William,” Kara rushes out. She takes a step forward, hands outstretched helplessly. Her eyes flit around the lab as she struggles to come up with a reason as to why exactly Lena, the fully grown independent woman, can’t do whatever she wants.
“He’s...he’s...not even your type.”
Lena’s eyebrow creeps higher and it’s her turn to cross her arms over her chest. She narrows her eyes at Kara, studying her like she’s something on a slide beneath one of her many microscopes.
“And what is my type, exactly?” she asks, not unkind but guarded in a way that’s hard for Kara to process. The blonde throws her hands in the air huffing about a breath and begins pacing, red boots stomping across the floor, this time without any destruction.
“I don’t know but it’s not William! He’s a journalist. You’re the one who said that was a problem! It means he’s relentless and nosy and won’t stop until he gets the truth. You like your privacy.”
“Kara, you’re a journalist.”
“And he’s always bringing baked goods around. Cookies, cupcakes, and what even is a hobnob anyway? You like to eat healthy. Think of all the kale you’ve subjected me to over the years, Lena. It’s a lot of kale.”
“Kara, you’re always bringing me snacks. Last week you bought me a dozen donuts on three different days. Admittedly, you ate most of them, but the point stands.”
“He’s too happy!” Kara is almost frantic, stopping her pacing only to realize she’s gotten much closer to Lena than she had been before. Close enough to see the pretty green of her eyes where it shifts ever so slightly to blue, but too focused on what she’s saying to notice the small smile on her lips. “He’s always being all optimistic and hopeful. It’s annoying.”
“Says the paragon of hope.”
Lena uncrosses her arms, and it’s only then that Kara notices how close they’re standing.
Close enough that she could reach out and shake Lena for not getting it. How can someone so smart be so dense? How can she not hear what Kara is saying? That she could never date William because...because...because...
“He’s not good enough for you,” Kara says quietly, eyes searching Lena’s, hoping she’ll be able to translate what’s happening even as she herself struggles to do so.
“Who is?” Lena asks gently.
That throws her and her brow crinkles again. Lena reaches up to draw a finger across it until it smooths out, and Kara doesn’t even think before leaning into the contact.
“What?”
Lena’s hand stays on her face, sliding across her brow, down the bridge of her nose, over her cheek to cradle it softly. Her eyes are intensely focused on Kara’s like she’s got the answer to a question Kara doesn’t know to ask.
“Who is good enough for me, Kara?”
“No one,” Kara says simply. “Lena, you’re so special. You’re the smartest person I’ve ever met, and I share an office with a twelfth level intellect. You’re beautiful. Not just the way you look, but in the way that you try so hard to do good in the world, to help people, and to help me. To help all of us.”
She brings her hand up to cover Lena’s that’s still holding her face and it feels like a puzzle piece sliding into place.
“You’re perfect, Lena. No human is good enough for you.”
Lena’s small smile grows and grows as Kara talks until it’s the special one that’s just for Kara. That’s when she realizes that it’s not like the one she shared with William at all because when Lena smiles at Kara like this it’s with her whole face and her whole heart.
Oh.
“I think you’re wrong,” Lena says, bringing her other hand up to hold Kara’s face properly. “I think an optimistic, hopeful, journalist with terrible eating habits is exactly my type. You’re right about one thing though.”
“What?”
“She’s not human.”
Oh.
Lena is kissing her with soft lips. Her fingers brush over Kara’s face and she can feel the callouses from hours spent working with tools and gadgets. She can smell Lena’s perfume and taste her toothpaste and oh.
When they break apart Kara realizes that she was definitely wrong. That’s Lena’s type exactly.
She leans back in to kiss her again, has just brushed her lips over Lena’s when she pauses and pulls back.
“Wait, so you’re not dating William, right?”
Lena doesn’t answer, just kisses her over and over, sliding her hands up into blonde hair and holding on like she’s never going to let go.

“Kara’s face contorts. She looks like she’s about to say something, but thinks better of it. Reaches out instead and pulls Lena into her arms. Lena holds herself stiff for a moment, but Kara feels so warm and solid and good against her that it only takes a second before she gives in.”
I saw this amazing post by @searidings and I totally stole it. You can read the whole fic here.

Maybe I’m Too Afraid to Admit It
Read on AO3
If the bar that the Superfriends had found themselves in had any shortcoming, Kara thought it was that their food options were rather limited. Their menu (if it could be called that) was a very small single-sided piece of paper that Kara had found laughable. She was looking it over with an uncharacteristically cynical expression on her face that only deepened when she saw that the bar no longer offered mozzarella sticks. Someone had crossed out that offering out with a red marker but they did at least have the decency to scrawl a diminutive frowny face next to it which Kara found one hundred percent warranted. She let out an exasperated sigh that threatened to become an overly dramatic groan. She tried to catch Alex’s eye to complain but found it impossible to do with her and Kelly so engrossed in their conversation. Both of them had matching smiles on their faces and Kara didn’t need to use her X-Ray vision to know that they were holding hands under the table. Giving up on getting Alex to sympathize with her plight, she turned to tap Lena on the shoulder, sure that if anyone were to understand Kara’s outrage it would be her, and saw that Lena was already looking at her. “You wanted the Aldeberan Rum, right?” Kara blinked, looked down at her now empty glass, and then back at Lena who was looking at her inquisitively. “Yeah,” she murmured, the mozzarella sticks (or lack thereof) all but forgotten. “Right,” Lena said and counted everybody off as she stood up, muttering everyone’s drink order under her breath as she did. “I’ll be right back,” she said and received murmurs of thanks in return from everyone sitting around the table before they dove right back into their conversations. “I can go,” Kara insisted and slid her chair back a few inches, already feeling a little tipsy before Lena waved her off. “I’m already up,” she said and motioned for Kara to push her chair back in. “I’ll be right back. Lightweight,” she teased and tipped Kara a wink that Kara found utterly disarming. Before Kara could come up with an appropriate retort, she watched as Lena allowed a pretty blonde woman slip past their table before making her way towards the bar, weaving her way past patrons and tables with a kind of grace that Kara found impressive considering that Lena was already on her fourth shot of whiskey.
When Lena tried to signal to the bartender Kara saw him hold up his hand to indicate that he would need a minute. He was in the middle of making what looked like a mojito and from his poorly disguised frown and the steady flow of expletives that Kara could hear him mutter under his breath as he muddled mint leaves, he wasn’t happy about it.
Even without superhearing, Lena seemed to understand that the bartender might need more than a minute because she sat herself down at one of the empty barstools at the counter.
Kara was debating whether or not to make the trip up to the bar and keep Lena company while she waited and had just started to stand up when she saw the same pretty blonde woman who had Lena let pass by their table a minute ago sit down on the stool beside Lena, martini glass clutched gracefully in her right hand and offered Lena her left to shake.
“ I know you must love it when strangers approach you when you’re out drinking but I would have gone home kicking myself if I didn’t at least say hello.”
She heard Lena chuckle politely. “ And yet you still came over to introduce yourself.” “As I said, I would have gone home kicking myself.” “I’m Lena, what’s—”
“What do you think, Kara?” “Huh?” Kara asked, her voice coming out in a high uneven squeak, that of a child that has just been caught with their hand in the cookie jar. She hadn’t been eavesdropping. She would have never done that on purpose, but she had still overheard something that she probably shouldn’t have. Because you were so focused on Lena, she thought, both scolding herself and trying to mitigate the guilt she felt building steadily in her chest. “About going back to your place after this round and watching a movie. Really make a night of it.” She gave Kelly’s hand a playful squeeze. “That is if Kelly doesn’t fall asleep on us.” “Excuse me for being tired after walking up and down stairs all day,” she said. She bit back a yawn and laid her head against Alex’s shoulder. “I don’t care how intricate the wainscoting is, I refuse to move into a walk-up.” She looked at Alex apologetically without lifting her head from Alex’s shoulder. “I think it’s Lena’s turn to pick a movie,” Nia said and only then seemed to realize that Lena still wasn’t back yet because she stared at the empty spot on Kara’s left for a moment before craning her neck around before finally spotting Lena sitting at the bar, still waiting to order, and still talking to that woman. Although, maybe we’ll have to let Brainy have her turn…” she said, leaning forward conspiratorially and pointing surreptitiously in the direction of where Lena was seated. “Why is that?” Kelly asked, lifting her head off of Alex’s shoulder. “ Oh ,” she said and swatted Nia playfully on the arm. “Don’t stare,” she scolded. “That means you too, Kara.” “Me?!” Kara whipped her head back around so fast that her ponytail whipped out sharply and caught her on the cheek. “I wasn’t staring,” she said, picking up her empty glass to give her hands something to do. “I just don’t feel like having Aldebaran Rum anymore…” She eyed the menu above the bar, dimly lit by the bare fluorescent bulbs hanging just off to the side, and scanned the side devoted to the list of alien liquor that they offered. “I’d rather have the Tamaranean Whiskey. I should tell Lena before she orders…” She mumbled the last part, speaking more to herself than anyone else at the table. She stood up and realized at once from the way that her center of balance pitched forward suddenly like a really good fastball and she had to take a few steps to get her feet securely under her again that Lena really might have been right in labeling her a lightweight. She didn’t feel drunk but she did feel unbalanced and strangely enough, she wasn’t sure if the rum was entirely to blame. “Is it too late to change my order?” Kara smiled sheepishly when Lena swiveled on her barstool to face her, clearly surprised to see Kara standing there. She wished that she had thought of a better way to interrupt the polite conversation still going on between Lena and the blonde stranger who looked less than pleased at Kara’s sudden appearance but thought it a better icebreaker than just tapping Lena on the shoulder. “No,” Lena said and pointed to the bartender who was still busy mixing another cocktail, the steady stream of expletives still spilling from under his breath like water from a leaking tap. Lena glanced apologetically at the blonde woman and offered her a polite smile. “Sorry.” “It’s fine,” the woman said airily, batting her hand in the air although, from the way her bright smile had morphed into something more resembling a grimace, Kara wasn’t so sure if she was being completely honest. “What did you want instead?” Lena asked.
Drawing a blank at first, Kara pointed clumsily at the menu above the bar. “Tamaranean Whiskey,” she said. “Whiskey?” Lena asked, raising one of her eyebrows. “A girl after my own heart,” she teased, her smile becoming something of a smirk. “Yeah,” Kara said, a little nervously, blaming the heat she could feel creeping up her face on the rum. “Alex also wants to do a movie night after this next round,” she said, feeling this information was too important not to pass along then and there. She pointed back towards their table as if Lena might need a refresher on which one of them was Alex. “If you’re up to it, of course… It’s your turn to pick the movie, I don’t know if you—” “I remember,” Lena said and shook her head as if she was disappointed that Kara might actually think she could forget. “And I am definitely up for it.” “That makes two of us.” Grinning, Kara’s smile nearly faltered when she noticed the sour expression on the blonde woman’s face as she slid off her stool. “I’m sorry,” Lena repeated. She turned towards the woman looking truly sorry. “It’s fine.” The woman snagged her martini glass and looked at it thoughtfully for a moment. “It was worth a shot,” she said and let out a nervous giggle, eyes shining. “Have a lovely evening, Lena.” She sauntered off towards a table near the back, looking back only once at Kara, the expression on her face hard to read, although if Kara didn’t know any better, she could have sworn that she almost looked jealous. “Do you want some company while you wait?” Kara asked, not liking the idea of leaving Lena waiting alone at the bar while everyone else was back at the table having fun without her. “I’d love some,” Lena said and gestured to the stool that the blonde woman had just vacated.
Ten minutes later, they both returned to the table with Kara leading the way with Lena bringing up the rear, carrying a tray of drinks that Kara had tried very hard to talk Lena into letting her carry but had been overruled when Lena saw the way Kara kept having to correct her balance. “I didn’t think you were coming back,” Nia said, gathering up their empty glasses to make room on the table for Lena to set the tray down. “Neither did I,” Lena said with a laugh. “You wouldn’t mind making one more trip would you?” Alex asked, looking guilty. “Just for a refill on peanuts,” she said and held up the tiny dish that had been sitting in the center of the table. “You know that I don’t work here, right?” Lena asked, holding out her hand and letting Alex drop the dish into it. “Good practice on the off chance that the whole CEO thing doesn’t work out,” Alex said brightly. “Thank you,” she murmured. “I can go,” Kara insisted, a frown forming on her face, thinking that Alex was more than capable of getting herself. “I promise I’ll be right back,” Lena said. “It will give me some time to think about what movie we’ll be watching. Definitely no action movies,” she added, smirking at Alex as if excluding Alex’s favorite genre from the running was enough of a punishment for sending Lena on another errand. “Cruel,” Alex called back at Lena’s retreating figure, a smirk on her face that Kara herself knew very well. It was the same one that Alex so often wore in her teenage years when she had found a way to get under Kara’s skin the way only a sibling can. The smirk vanished a moment later and Kara felt Alex poke her very hard on the arm. “What the hell was that?” Alex inquired the moment that Lena was out of earshot, head lowered slightly in a bid for privacy even with everyone crowded around the table. “What was what?” Kara asked, so confused by the question that she could only stare back perplexed. She even pressed a hand delicately against her chest in the perfect ‘Who, me?’ look which only served to irritate Alex even more. “What did I do?” Kara asked, genuinely mystified. “Do you really not know?” Alex asked. Her eyes narrowed, searched Kara’s face for any hint of dishonesty, and seemed to find none because she let out an exasperated sigh and leaned in close before elaborating. “You totally scared off that woman who was flirting with Lena.” She sighed again. "You did that when we went to karaoke last week too.” “What?” Kara spluttered. “I didn’t…” She shook her head vigorously and nearly asked Alex, what woman ? But was very glad that she stopped herself before she did, certain that Alex would have poked her again if she did. “She wasn’t flirting with Lena,” she said, almost laughing. “And at karaoke… Lena and I were singing a duet,” she reminded her, thinking of how Kara had whisked Lena up to the stage, barely remembering that Lena had been talking with a woman sitting at one of the nearby tables. “It was our turn,” she said.
“Kara,” Alex said, still sounding as if she couldn’t quite fathom the possibility that her sister could be so oblivious. “So in your book, she was just being friendly?”
“Yes,” Kara said, her voice full of the same mystified confusion in Alex’s voice. “Is that so hard to imagine?”
