This brewery used to be an island which required a bridge or boat to get access. It was built before automobiles, and horse drawn wagons delivered the beer. The wagons went down into a ditch along the brewery floor allowing the kegs to be rolled onto the wagons. The Dubuque Star Brewery has been a winery for years and only recently started making the original Dubuque Star Beer, and it is delicious. The Shot Tower was built to make shot, or as we know them - bullets) for the Civil War. It later became a fire watch tower for the huge lumberyards, before falling into disrepair. The Daughters of the American Revolution restored, and the City rehabbed it a few decades ago. The road alongside the brewery used to align with the “High Bridge” over to the bluffs above East Dubuque on the Illinois side. The swinging railroad bridge allows river boats to pass on the river, and trains across the bridge and then through a tunnel to the rail yard.
